1 Απ’ τη Σελά μέσ’ απ’ την έρημο στείλτε αγγελιοφόρους μ’ ένα αρνί για της χώρας τον άρχοντα,*μ’ ένα αρνί... άρχοντα. Πιθανώς πρόκειται για δώρο του βασιλιά της Μωάβ προς το βασίλειο του Ιούδα, για να επιτύχει κάποια χάρη. στο όρος της Σιών. 2 Και να του πουν: «Σαν τα πουλιά, που ’ναι διωγμένα απ’ τη φωλιά τους και που πετούν εδώ κι εκεί, έτσι είναι και της Μωάβ οι κόρες στις διαβάσεις του Αρνών.*Αρνών. Για πολλά χρόνια ο χείμαρρος αυτός αποτελούσε το φυσικό βόρειο σύνορο της Μωάβ.3 Συμβούλεψέ μας, αποφάσισε, άπλωσε τη σκιά σου μες στο καταμεσήμερο και σαν τη νύχτα σκέπασέ μας. Κάλυψε τους κυνηγημένους μας και μην προδίνεις τους φυγάδες. 4 Άφησε τους εκπατρισμένους της Μωάβ να βρουν κατάλυμα κοντά σου· γίνε τους καταφύγιο από τον εξολοθρευτή».

Τότε η καταπίεση θα πάψει, θα πάρει τέλος και η καταστροφή· εκείνος που τη χώρα δυναστεύει, θα εξαφανιστεί. 5 Τότε θα στηθεί θρόνος στεριωμένος στην πιστότητα, και θα καθίσει πάνω του ένας από τους απογόνους του Δαβίδ, ένας που θ’ αγαπά το δίκαιο και θα ’χει πάθος για τη δικαιοσύνη.

6 Ακούσαμε για την αλαζονεία της Μωάβ, μια αλαζονεία υπέρμετρη, για την υπεροψία της και για την έπαρσή της· οι κομπασμοί της όμως είναι μάταιοι. 7 Γι’ αυτό οι Μωαβίτες θρηνούν για τη Μωάβ· όλοι θρηνούν· στενάζουν όταν θυμούνται τις ωραίες σταφιδόπιτες της Κιρ-Χαρεσέθ, ολότελα απελπισμένοι.*Για την Κιρ-Χαρεσέθ βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 15:1. – Για τις σταφιδόπιτες βλ. υποσ. εις Ωσ 3:1.

8 Τα λιβάδια της Εσεβών και τ’ αμπέλια της Σιβμά μαραίνονται. Οι άρχοντες των εθνών κατέστρεψαν τα κλήματα που έφταναν ώς την Ιαζήρ κι έμπαιναν μες στην έρημο, που τα κλαδιά τους είχαν απλωθεί κι έφταναν ως πέρα από τη Νεκρά Θάλασσα. 9 Γι’ αυτό θρηνώ τον αμπελώνα της Σιβμά, όπως θρηνώ την Ιαζήρ. Σας βρέχω με τα δάκρυά μου, Εσεβών και Ελεαλή· γιατί πάνω στους θερινούς καρπούς και στη σοδειά σας ξέσπασε των εχθρών σας η πολεμική κραυγή. 10 Χάθηκε η χαρά κι η αγαλλίαση απ’ τους αγρούς τους καρποφόρους, κι ούτε τραγούδια πια μέσα στ’ αμπέλια, ούτε χαρές· οι εργάτες δεν πατάνε πια στα πατητήρια τα σταφύλια, έπαψαν οι χαρούμενες φωνές.*έπαψαν... φωνές, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «έπαψα τις χαρούμενες φωνές».

11 Γι’ αυτό η καρδιά μου τρέμει για τη Μωάβ σαν της κιθάρας τις χορδές, τα σωθικά μου τρέμουν για την Κιρ-Αρές.*Κιρ-Αρές. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 15:1.12 Κοπιάζει άδικα ο Μωάβ να τρέχει στους ιερούς τόπους και στο ιερό του να πηγαίνει για να προσευχηθεί· δε θα πετύχει τίποτα.

13 Αυτά είχε πει από παλιά ο Κύριος ενάντια στη Μωάβ. 14 Να, όμως, τι εξαγγέλλει ο Κύριος, τώρα: «Σε τρία χρόνια ακριβώς, η δύναμη η μεγάλη της Μωάβ θα καταπέσει. Απ’ το μεγάλο πληθυσμό της μονάχα ένα υπόλοιπο θα μείνει· κι αυτό θα ’ναι πολύ μικρό κι ασήμαντο».

12 And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail. 13 This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning Moab since that time. 14 But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.*16.14 feeble: or, not many
