1 Θα ήσουνα σαν τη φωτιά που καίει τους θάμνους

και κάνει να κοχλάζουν τα νερά,

έτσι που οι εχθροί σου να γνωρίσουν τι Θεός είσαι,

και τα έθνη να τρέμουν στην παρουσία σου.

2 Άλλοτε, έκανες πράξεις τρομερές, που δεν τις περιμέναμε!

Κάποτε που κατέβηκες, τρέμαν’ στην παρουσία σου τα όρη.

3 Απ’ την πολύ παλιά εποχή οι άνθρωποι δεν έχουν μάθει τίποτα,

δεν έχουνε ακούσει,

ούτ’ έχουν δει κάποιον θεό άλλον εκτός από σένα,

που να βοηθάει όσους ελπίζουνε σ’ αυτόν.

4 Φέρεσαι φιλικά σ’ εκείνους

που πράττουνε με προθυμία ό,τι είναι δίκαιο,

σ’ εκείνους που τηρούν τις εντολές σου.

Εσύ οργίστηκες μ’ εμάς,

αλλά εμείς δεν πάψαμε να αμαρτάνουμε απέναντί σου·

απ’ τα παλιά τα χρόνια είμαστε αποστάτες.*Η αρχή και το τέλος του στ. αποδίδονται κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. είναι ασαφές.

5 Όλοι μας μολυνθήκαμε,

κι όλη η δικαιοσύνη μας είναι σαν ρούχο ρυπαρό.

Όλοι μας σαν το φύλλο μαραινόμαστε,

κι η ανομία μας καθώς ο άνεμος μας διασκορπίζει.

6 Κανένας δεν επικαλείται τ’ όνομά σου

ούτε και σκέφτεται να σ’ εμπιστευτεί.

Έκρυψες πια από μας το πρόσωπό σου,

και να υποφέρουμε, μας άφησες,

τα επακόλουθα των αμαρτιών μας.

7 Ωστόσο, Κύριε, εσύ είσαι ο Πατέρας μας.

Εμείς είμαστε ο πηλός, ο πλάστης μας εσύ ’σαι·

όλοι μας έργο των χεριών σου είμαστε.

8 Γι’ αυτό και μην οργίζεσαι, Κύριε, υπέρμετρα

και μην κρατάς στη μνήμη σου

την ανομία μας για πάντα.

Μα κοίταξε, λοιπόν· όλοι εμείς είμαστε ο λαός σου.

9 Οι άγιες σου οι πόλεις ερημώθηκαν·

η Σιών έγινε έρημος, η Ιερουσαλήμ ερείπια.

10 Ο άγιος και ωραίος μας ναός,

όπου σε υμνούσαν οι προπάτορές μας,

της φωτιάς έγινε παρανάλωμα,

όλα όσα μας ευχαριστούσαν ερειπώθηκαν.

11 Μπορείς, Κύριε, να μένεις απαθής

μπρος σ’ όλα αυτά;

Μπορείς να σιωπάς και να μας ταπεινώνεις ως το έπακρο;

6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. 7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.*64.7 consumed: Heb. melted*64.7 because: Heb. by the hand 8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

9 Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. 10 Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. 11 Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste. 12 Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O LORD? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?
