1 Ο βασιλιάς Εζεκίας, μόλις τ’ άκουσε αυτά, ξέσκισε τα ρούχα του,*Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. φόρεσε πένθιμα και πήγε στον οίκο του Κυρίου. 2 Ταυτόχρονα έστειλε τον Ελιακίμ, οικονόμο των ανακτόρων, το γραμματέα Σεβνά και τους πιο ηλικιωμένους από τους ιερείς ντυμένους στα πένθιμα στον προφήτη Ησαΐα, γιο του Αμώς, 3 με το ακόλουθο μήνυμα: «Άκου τι λέει ο Εζεκίας: Σήμερα είναι μέρα θλίψης, τιμωρίας και ντροπής, γιατί είμαστε σαν τα παιδιά που ήρθε η ώρα τους να γεννηθούν, αλλά η μάνα τους δεν έχει τη δύναμη να τα φέρει στον κόσμο. 4 Αν ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου, άκουσε όλα αυτά που ξεστόμισε ο υπασπιστής του βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας, που ο κύριός του τον έστειλε για να προσβάλει τον αληθινό Θεό, μπορεί να τον τιμωρήσει γι’ αυτά που είπε. Γι’ αυτό εσύ προσευχήσου γι’ αυτό το υπόλοιπο που απέμεινε από το λαό».

5 Όταν οι άνθρωποι του βασιλιά Εζεκία ήρθαν στον Ησαΐα, 6 ο προφήτης τούς είπε: «Να μεταφέρετε στον κύριό σας αυτό το μήνυμα: Ο Κύριος λέει: Μη φοβάσαι τα λόγια που άκουσες, με τα οποία με πρόσβαλαν οι άνθρωποι του βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας. 7 Εγώ θα του εμπνεύσω τέτοια διάθεση, ώστε όταν ακούσει κάποια φήμη, να γυρίσει στη χώρα του· και θα κάνω ώστε εκεί στη χώρα του να δολοφονηθεί».

8 Ο υπασπιστής του βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας έμαθε πως ο κύριός του είχε φύγει από τη Λαχίς και πολεμούσε εναντίον της Λιβνά· γι’ αυτό πήγε εκεί να τον βρει.

9,10 Πράγματι, ο βασιλιάς της Ασσυρίας είχε μάθει πως ο Τιρακά, βασιλιάς της Αιθιοπίας, ερχόταν να πολεμήσει εναντίον του. Τότε έστειλε πάλι ανθρώπους του στον Εζεκία, βασιλιά του Ιούδα, με το ακόλουθο μήνυμα: «Μην αφήνεις το Θεό σου, στον οποίο εμπιστεύεσαι, να σε εξαπατάει λέγοντας ότι τάχα δε θα παραδοθεί η Ιερουσαλήμ στην κυριαρχία μου. 11 Θα έχεις ακούσει, βέβαια, τα όσα έκαναν οι βασιλιάδες της Ασσυρίας σε όλες τις άλλες χώρες και πώς τις ερήμωσαν· κι εσύ φαντάζεσαι πως θα γλιτώσετε; 12 Όταν οι πρόγονοί μου κατέστρεφαν τη Γωζάν, τη Χαρράν, τη Ρεσέφ και το λαό της Εδέμ, ο οποίος κατοικεί στη Θελασσάρ, μήπως οι θεοί εκείνων των εθνών μπόρεσαν να τα σώσουν; 13 Πού είναι οι βασιλιάδες της Αιμάθ και της Αρφάδ ή οι βασιλιάδες των Σεφαρβιτών, της Ενά και της Αβά;»

14 Ο Εζεκίας πήρε το γράμμα που του έφεραν οι απεσταλμένοι και το διάβασε. Έπειτα ανέβηκε στο ναό του Κυρίου, το ξετύλιξε ενώπιόν του 15 και προσευχήθηκε μ’ αυτά τα λόγια: 16 «Κύριε του σύμπαντος, Θεέ του Ισραήλ, εσύ που κάθεσαι πάνω στα χερουβίμ,*πάνω στα χερουβίμ. Για την προέλευση της φρ. βλ. Εξ 25:22. εσύ είσαι ο Θεός, μόνον εσύ, για όλα τα βασίλεια της γης· εσύ δημιούργησες τον ουρανό και τη γη. 17 Άνοιξε, Κύριε, τα μάτια σου και κοίταξε. Γείρε, Κύριε, το αυτί σου κι άκουσε όλα τα λόγια που οι απεσταλμένοι του Σενναχηρίμ, ξεστόμισαν για να προσβάλουν εσένα, τον αληθινό Θεό. 18 Αλήθεια, Κύριε, οι βασιλιάδες της Ασσυρίας εξαφάνισαν τα άλλα έθνη κι ερήμωσαν τις χώρες τους. 19 Έριξαν τους θεούς τους στη φωτιά, γιατί εκείνοι δεν ήτανε θεοί, αλλά ανθρώπινα κατασκευάσματα από ξύλο και πέτρα, και γι’ αυτό μπόρεσαν και τους κατέστρεψαν. 20 Αλλά εσύ, Κύριε Θεέ μας, σώσε μας τώρα απ’ τα νύχια του Σενναχηρίμ, για να μάθουν όλα τα βασίλεια της γης ότι εσύ είσαι ο μόνος Κύριος».

21 Τότε ο Ησαΐας, γιος του Αμώς, έστειλε αυτό το μήνυμα στον Εζεκία: «Ορίστε τι λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ: Άκουσα την προσευχή σου σχετικά με το Σενναχηρίμ, βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας. 22 Άκου τώρα τι λέω εγώ, ο Κύριος, εναντίον του:

Σε καταφρονεί,

σε χλευάζει η παρθένα,

η πόλη της Σιών!

Σε περιγελάει κουνώντας το κεφάλι της

η πόλη της Ιερουσαλήμ!

23 Ποιον έβρισες και ποιον βλασφήμησες;

Σε ποιον ενάντια τη φωνή σου ύψωσες

και τον κοίταξες υπεροπτικά;

Ενάντια στον Άγιο Θεό του Ισραήλ!

24 Τους δούλους σου έστειλες να με προσβάλεις,

εμένα, τον Κύριο, και είπες:

"εγώ με τις πολλές μου άμαξες

σκάλωσα στις βουνοκορφές,

στις άκρες του Λιβάνου.

Έκοψα τα ψηλά τα κέδρα του,

τα πιο όμορφά του κυπαρίσσια,

κι έφτασα στην ψηλότερη κορυφή του,

στο δάσος του το πιο πυκνό.

25 Πηγάδια έσκαψα

κι άλλων λαών ήπια νερό·*κι άλλων λαών ήπια νερό, σύμφωνα με το χειρ. του Κουμράν και με το Β΄ Βασ 19:24. Το παραδοσιακό εβρ. έχει «κι ήπια νερό».

και με τα ίχνη των ποδιών μου

ξέρανα τα ποτάμια όλα της Αιγύπτου".

26 Δεν έχεις όμως ακουστά, Σενναχηρίμ,

ότι εγώ όλα αυτά τα ετοίμασα

εδώ και πολλά χρόνια

και τα σχεδίασα απ’ τον παλιό καιρό;

Τώρα, λοιπόν, τα εκτελώ,

για να μπορείς εσύ να κάνεις τις πόλεις τις οχυρωμένες

σωρούς ερείπια.

27 Τρομάξανε οι κάτοικοί τους

κι από το φόβο τους παρέλυσαν·

με το χορτάρι μοιάσανε του αγρού

και με την τρυφερή τη χλόη,

με το χορτάρι που φυτρώνει στη σκεπή

και πριν αναπτυχθεί ξεραίνεται.

28 Ξέρω για σε τα πάντα:

Τι κάνεις και πού πας,

και τη μανία που σε πιάνει εναντίον μου.

29 Μάνιασες εναντίον μου

κι άκουσα τα προσβλητικά σου λόγια.

Γι’ αυτό θα σε δαμάσω

βάζοντας κρίκο στα ρουθούνια σου

και μες στο στόμα σου το χαλινάρι μου·

και θα σε κάνω να γυρίσεις στην πατρίδα σου

από το δρόμο που είχες πάρει

για να ’ρθείς.

30 »Και σ’ εσένα, Εζεκία, δίνω αυτό το σημείο: Αυτό το χρόνο και τον επόμενο θα φάτε ό,τι φυτρώνει από μόνο του. Τον τρίτο όμως χρόνο θα σπείρετε και θα θερίσετε, θα φυτέψετε αμπέλια και θα φάτε τον καρπό τους. 31 Όσο για το υπόλοιπο που θα μείνει από τους απογόνους του Ιούδα, θα ριζοβολήσει βαθιά μέσα στη γη και τα κλαδιά του θα γεμίσουν καρπό. 32 Από την Ιερουσαλήμ θα βγει ένας λαός επιζώντων, από το όρος Σιών θ’ ανορθωθούν αυτοί που θα έχουν διασωθεί. Αυτό θα το ’χω κάνει εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, με τη φλογερή αγάπη μου. 33 Και τώρα, να τι αναγγέλλει ο Κύριος για το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας: Σ’ αυτή την πόλη δεν θα μπει, ούτε σ’ αυτήν θα ρίξει βέλος. Δε θα της επιτεθεί προβάλλοντας ασπίδες εναντίον της ούτ’ εναντίον της πρόχωμα θα σηκώσει. 34 Από τον ίδιο δρόμο που ήρθε θα γυρίσει πίσω. Αλλά σ’ αυτή την πόλη δε θα μπει. Εγώ, ο Κύριος, το λέω. 35 Θα υπερασπιστώ την Ιερουσαλήμ και θα τη σώσω, επειδή εγώ το θέλω, και για χάρη του δούλου μου, του Δαβίδ».

36 Πράγματι, βγήκε στο στρατόπεδο των Ασσυρίων ένας άγγελος Κυρίου και θανάτωσε εκατόν ογδόντα πέντε χιλιάδες άντρες. Κι όταν σηκώθηκαν νωρίς το πρωί όσοι είχαν μείνει ζωντανοί, αντίκρυσαν γύρω τους πτώματα. 37 Αμέσως τότε ο βασιλιάς Σενναχηρίμ έλυσε την πολιορκία και γύρισε στην πρωτεύουσά του τη Νινευή. 38 Μια μέρα, εκεί που προσκυνούσε στο ναό του Νισρώ, του θεού του, δύο από τους γιους του, ο Αδραμμέλεκ κι ο Σαρεσέρ, τον δολοφόνησαν με ξίφος κι ύστερα κατέφυγαν στη χώρα του Αραράτ. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ένας άλλος γιος του, ο Εσαρχαδδών.

1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.*37.3 blasphemy: or, provocation 4 It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.*37.4 left: Heb. found 5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.*37.7 send…: or, put a spirit into him

8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?

14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, 16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. 17 Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. 18 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,*37.18 nations: Heb. lands 19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.*37.19 cast: Heb. given 20 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: 22 This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. 23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 24 By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.*37.24 By thy…: Heb. 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.*37.38 Armenia: Heb.
