1 Θα σας πω το τραγούδι του φίλου μου για το αμπέλι του:

Είχα ένα αμπέλι, λέει ο φίλος μου,

πάνω σε εύφορη βουνοπλαγιά.

2 Το ’σκαψα, απ’ τα λιθάρια το καθάρισα

κι όλο το φύτεψα κλήματα εκλεκτά.

Στη μέση του έχτισα έναν πύργο

και πατητήρι τού ’φτιαξα.

Και πρόσμενα να κάνει ωραία σταφύλια,

μα κείνο έκανε ξινοστάφυλα.

3 Κρίνετε, λοιπόν, τώρα εσείς,

κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ

και ο λαός του Ιούδα,

ανάμεσα σ’ εμένα και στο αμπέλι μου.

4 Τι θα μπορούσα ακόμα να ’χα κάνει

γι’ αυτό το αμπέλι μου

και δεν το έκανα;

Ενώ περίμενα πως θα ’κανε ωραία σταφύλια,

γιατί να κάνει ξινοστάφυλα;

5 Τώρα, λοιπόν, θα σας το πω

τι πρόκειται στο αμπέλι μου να κάνω:

Το φράχτη του θα βγάλω

να μπούνε ζωντανά να το βοσκήσουνε·

τον τοίχο του θα τον γκρεμίσω

ώστε να ποδοπατηθεί.

6 Θα το αφήσω ν’ αγριέψει·

ούτε θα κλαδευτεί ούτε θα σκαφτεί.

Θ’ αφήσω να φυτρώσουν μέσα εκεί

αγκάθια και τριβόλια

και θα προστάξω ως και τα σύννεφα

πάνω του να μη ρίξουνε βροχή.

7 Λαέ του Ισραήλ, εσείς είστε τ’ αμπέλι,

που ανήκει στον Κύριο του σύμπαντος

κι εσείς του Ιούδα ο λαός

είστε η φυτεία του η αγαπημένη.

Περίμενε από σας αγαθοεργίες

μα να, τώρα παντού αιματοχυσίες·

περίμενε ν’ ασκείτε δικαιοσύνη

μα να, κραυγές για τ’ άδικο κι οδύνη.

8 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που προσθέτουν στο σπίτι τους κι άλλο σπίτι κι ενώνουνε χωράφι με χωράφι, έτσι που πια να μην υπάρχει τόπος για άλλους κι αυτοί να μείνουνε οι μοναδικοί της χώρας κάτοχοι! 9 Στ’ αυτιά μου ηχούν τα λόγια του Κυρίου του σύμπαντος: «Πράγματι, όλα αυτά τα σπίτια θα ερημωθούν, αυτές οι ωραίες και μεγάλες κατοικίες θα μείνουν ακατοίκητες. 10 Δέκα στρέμματα αμπέλι θα βγάζουνε μονάχα έναν κουβά κρασί, δέκα σακιά σπόρου θα δίνουνε στο θερισμό μονάχα ένα σακί».

11 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που απ’ το πρωί νωρίς ορμάνε στο πιοτό και που ως τη νύχτα αργά με το κρασί μεθάνε. 12 Τα όργιά τους τα συνοδεύουνε κιθάρες, άρπες, τύμπανα, φλογέρες και βέβαια κρασί· μα δεν προσέχουν του Κυρίου τις ενέργειες και το έργο που αυτή την ώρα κάνει δεν το βλέπουν. 13 «Γι’ αυτό», λέει ο Κύριος «θα οδηγηθεί ο λαός μου στην αιχμαλωσία γιατί δε θέλει να καταλάβει. Οι άρχοντές του θα υποφέρουν απ’ την πείνα και όλος ο λαός από τη δίψα». 14 Γι’ αυτό ο άδης μεγαλώνει την κοιλιά του κι ανοίγει διάπλατα το στόμα του, να καταπιεί τους ευγενείς αντάμα με τα πλήθη της Ιερουσαλήμ, καθώς θα διασκεδάζουν. 15 Έτσι όλοι θα εξευτελισθούν κι όσοι κοιτάζουν υπεροπτικά θ’ αναγκαστούν να χαμηλώσουνε το βλέμμα. 16 Αλλά ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος θα δείξει τη μεγαλοσύνη του πράττοντας σύμφωνα με την κρίση του· ο Θεός ο άγιος θ’ αποκαλύψει την αγιότητά του αποδίδοντας δικαιοσύνη. 17 Στης πόλης τα ερείπια αρνιά θα βόσκουν, σαν να ’ταν βοσκοτόπια τους, και γίδια που τα καλοτρέφουνε, εκεί θα βρίσκουν την τροφή τους.*Στο εβρ. ο στ. είναι ασαφής.

18 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που ’ναι ζεμένοι σαν με ιμάντες στης αδικίας τους την άμαξα!*που ’ναι... άμαξα, το πιθανό κείμενο. Το εβρ. έχει: «που ’ναι ζεμένοι την αδικία με σκοινιά απάτης». Ξοπίσω τους τραβούν το όχημα που κουβαλάει την τιμωρία για τις ανομίες τους, 19 και λένε: «Ας βιαστεί ο Θεός, το έργο του ας το επιταχύνει, για να το δούμε· η απόφαση του Αγίου Θεού του Ισραήλ ας έρθει κι ας εκτελεστεί, να τη γνωρίσουμε κι εμείς».

20 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που λένε το κακό καλό και το καλό κακό, που παρασταίνουν το μαύρο άσπρο και το άσπρο μαύρο, που κάνουν το πικρό γλυκό και το γλυκό πικρό.

21 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που θαρρούν πως είναι σοφοί και για έξυπνοι περνιούνται. 22 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που είναι ήρωες μονάχα στο κρασί, κι είναι γενναίοι μόνο όταν τα δυνατά ποτά τ’ αναμειγνύουν· 23 που μ’ ένα δώρο, αθωώνουνε τον ένοχο και αγνοούν το δίκιο του αθώου. 24 Όπως οι γλώσσες της φωτιάς κατατρώγουν το καλάμι κι όπως το χόρτο αφανίζεται στη φλόγα, έτσι και η ρίζα τους θα σαπίσει και το άνθος τους θα εξανεμιστεί σαν σκόνη. Κι ετούτο, επειδή περιφρόνησαν το νόμο που έδωσε ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος και χλεύασαν τις προειδοποιήσεις που τους έστειλε ο Άγιος Θεός του Ισραήλ.

25 Για τούτο οργισμένος είν’ ο Κύριος ενάντια στο λαό του, το χέρι του σηκώνει και τον χτυπά. Ταρακουνιούνται τα βουνά, γεμίζουνε οι δρόμοι πτώματα σαν να ’τανε σκουπίδια. Και μολαυτά ο θυμός του δεν ξεθυμαίνει· το χέρι του είναι έτοιμο και πάλι να χτυπήσει.

26 Τότε δίνει το σύνθημα σε κάποιον μακρινό λαό,*λαό, το πιθανό κείμενο. Το εβρ. έχει «λαούς». του σφυρίζει για να ’ρθεί από της γης τα πέρατα· και τότε εκείνος καταφθάνει στο λεπτό. 27 Κανενός η ζώνη δεν έχει λυθεί από τη μέση του, ούτε έχει κοπεί λουρί απ’ τα σανδάλια του. 28 Είναι τα βέλη τους ακονισμένα, και τεντωμένα όλα τα τόξα τους. Και είναι των αλόγων τους οι οπλές σκληρές σαν τσακμακόπετρες κι οι ρόδες των αρμάτων τους σαν σίφουνας γυρίζουν. 29 Ο βρυχηθμός τους είναι καθώς του λιονταριού, βρυχιούνται σαν το λιονταρόπουλο που με φωνή βραχνή το θύμα του αρπάζει και μακριά το φέρνει και που κανείς να του το πάρει δεν τολμά.

30 Και θα ξεσπάσει εκείνη την ημέρα πάνω τους σαν τη βουή θάλασσας αγριεμένης. Όπου και να κοιτάξει κανείς στη χώρα, δεν θα δει παρά σκοτάδι κι αγωνία! Το φως της μέρας θα το σκεπάσουν πυκνά και μαύρα σύννεφα!

11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!*5.11 inflame: of, pursue 12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.*5.13 honourable…: Heb. glory are men of famine 14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it. 15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled: 16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.*5.16 God…: or, the holy God: Heb. the God the holy 17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.

18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope: 19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly: 27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken: 28 Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind: 29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it. 30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.*5.30 sorrow: or, distress*5.30 and the light…: or, when it is light, it shall be dark in the destructions thereof
