1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Πάρε μια πλάκα μεγάλη και γράψε πάνω της με ευανάγνωστη γραφή: Μαχέρ-σαλάλ-χας-βαζ (ταχεία λαφυραγώγηση - βιαστική αρπαγή)». 2 Την έδειξα σε δύο αξιόπιστους μάρτυρες, στον ιερέα Ουρία και στο Ζαχαρία, γιο του Ιεβερεχία. 3 Έπειτα συνευρέθηκα με τη γυναίκα μου την προφήτισσα, κι αυτή έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε γιο. Τότε ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Ονόμασέ τον "Μαχέρ-σαλάλ-χας-βαζ". 4 Γιατί πριν μάθει ακόμα το παιδί να λέει "πατέρα" και "μητέρα", της Δαμασκού τα πλούτη και της Σαμάρειας τα λάφυρα θα τα φέρουν στο βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας».

5 Ο Κύριος συνέχισε να μου μιλάει: 6 «Επειδή ο λαός αυτός περιφρονεί τα νερά του Σιλωάμ, που ρέουν ήρεμα,*Ο αγωγός του Σιλωάμ μετέφερε στην Ιερουσαλήμ το νερό της πηγής Γιχών. Έτσι η πόλη είχε πάντα νερό, ακόμα και σε καιρό πολιορκίας. και τρομάζει μπροστά στο Ρεσίν και στο γιο του Ρεμαλία. 7 θα προκαλέσω ν’ ανέβουν ίσαμε πάνω τους τα ορμητικά, άφθονα νερά του ποταμού Ευφράτη, δηλαδή ο βασιλιάς της Ασσυρίας με όλο το στρατό του. Θ’ ανέβει πάνω απ’ όλες του τις διώρυγες, κι απ’ όλες του τις όχθες θα πλημμυρίσει. 8 Και θα εισχωρήσει στου Ιούδα τη χώρα, θα ξεχειλίσει, θα πλημμυρίσει και θα τους φτάσει ως το λαιμό».

Ο Θεός είναι μαζί μας. Θ’ απλώσει τα φτερά του για να σκεπάσει όλη τη χώρα. 9 Λαοί, όσο κι αν συνασπίζεστε, θα συντριβείτε! Ακούστε όλοι εσείς που κατοικείτε στα πέρατα της γης! Εξοπλιστείτε όσο θέλετε, αλλά στο τέλος σάς προσμένει ο τρόμος! Εξοπλιστείτε όσο θέλετε· κι όμως θα συντριβείτε! 10 Κάντε σχέδια, θα εκμηδενιστούν! Πάρτε αποφάσεις, θα ’ναι ανώφελες! Γιατί ο Θεός είναι μαζί μας.

11 Όταν ο Κύριος με πήρε με το χέρι του να με προτρέψει ώστε να μην ακολουθήσω το παράδειγμα αυτού του λαού, μου είπε: 12 «Μην ονομάζετε κι εσείς συνωμοσία καθετί που ο λαός αυτός το λέει συνωμοσία· κι ό,τι αυτός φοβάται, μην το φοβάστε κι εσείς και μην τρομάζετε. 13 Εμένα, τον Κύριο του σύμπαντος, εμένα να θεωρείτε άγιον· εμένα να φοβάστε κι εμένα να τρέμετε. 14 Εγώ θα γίνω ο τόπος όπου θα αγιάζονται αλλά και η πέτρα όπου θα σκοντάψουν, κι ο βράχος πάνω στον οποίο θα πέσουν τα δύο βασίλεια του Ισραήλ· θα γίνω ενέδρα και παγίδα για τους κατοίκους της Ιερουσαλήμ. 15 Πολλοί θα σκοντάψουν, θα πέσουν και θα συντριφθούν, θα παγιδευτούν και θα συλληφθούν».

16 Θα φυλάξω τη μαρτυρία, θα εμπιστευθώ τη διδασκαλία στους μαθητές μου. 17 Ο Κύριος τώρα κρύβεται από τους απογόνους του Ιακώβ· εγώ όμως θα τον περιμένω. 18 Να ’μαι, εγώ και τα παιδιά που μου ’δωσε ο Θεός, είμαστε σύμβολα και σημεία για τον Ισραήλ εκ μέρους του Κυρίου του σύμπαντος, που κατοικεί στο όρος Σιών.

19 Θα σας πούνε: «Συμβουλευτείτε τα πνεύματα των νεκρών και τους μάντεις που ψιθυρίζουν και μουρμουρίζουν. Δεν πρέπει ένας λαός να συμβουλεύεται τους θεούς του; Να ρωτάει τους νεκρούς για τους ζωντανούς;» 20 Η μόνη απάντηση είναι: Κρατήστε τη διδασκαλία του Κυρίου και τη διδαχή του. Όποιος δεν ακολουθεί αυτή την προσταγή, γι’ αυτόν δεν υπάρχει ελπίδα.

21 Οι άνθρωποι περιφέρονται στη χώρα βασανισμένοι και πεινασμένοι· λιμοκτονούν, αγανακτούν και καταριούνται το βασιλιά και το Θεό τους. Στρέφονται προς τον ουρανό, 22 μετά κοιτάνε προς τη γη, αλλά κι εκεί βλέπουν μονάχα θλίψη και σκοτεινιά, σκληρή καταπίεση και νύχτα δίχως μια στάλα φως. 23 Και να ξεφύγουν απ’ αυτήν δεν θα μπορούν.*Το εβραϊκό είναι ασαφές.

Στο παρελθόν ο Κύριος περιφρόνησε την περιοχή του Ζαβουλών κι αυτήν του Νεφθαλί· στο μέλλον όμως θα δοξάσει αυτές τις περιοχές, που βρίσκονται προς το δρόμο της θάλασσας, καθώς και τη χώρα ανατολικά του Ιορδάνη, στην περιοχή των εθνών.

In making speed to the spoil he hasteneth the prey, or, Make speed, etc 2 And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah. 3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.*8.3 went: Heb. approached 4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.*8.4 the riches…: or, he that is before the king of Assyria shall take away the riches, etc

5 The LORD spake also unto me again, saying, 6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son; 7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks: 8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.*8.8 stretching…: Heb. fulness of the breadth of thy land shall be the stretchings out of his wings

9 Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.*8.9 people, and: or, people, yet 10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

11 For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,*8.11 with…: Heb. in strength of hand 12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid. 13 Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. 17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. 18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? 20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.*8.20 no…: Heb. no morning 21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward. 22 And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
