1 Προσευχή του προφήτη Αββακούμ, που ψάλλεται σύμφωνα με το ρυθμό των θρήνων.

2 Κύριε, άκουσα την αγγελία σου.

Κύριε, φοβήθηκα αυτό που σχεδιάζεις.

Πραγματοποίησέ το σύντομα,

κάνε να το δω όσο ζω.

Στους ταραγμένους χρόνους μας

δείξε μας έλεος.

3 Ο Θεός έρχεται από τη Θαιμάν,

ο Άγιος Θεός από το όρος Φαράν. (Διάψαλμα)

Η λαμπρότητά του φωτίζει τους ουρανούς

και η δόξα του γεμίζει τη γη.

4 Η λάμψη του είναι σαν το φως του ήλιου,

ακτίνες λαμπερές σκορπιούνται από το χέρι του,

όπου κρυμμένη είν’ η δύναμή του.

5 Μπροστά του προχωρεί αρρώστια,

πανούκλα ακολουθεί τα βήματά του.

6 Πατάει το πόδι του στη γη κι αυτή τραντάζεται,

ρίχνει στα έθνη τη ματιά του

και σκιρτούν.

Πανάρχαια βουνά ταρακουνιούνται,

αιώνιοι λόφοι υποχωρούν,

που από παλιά πάνω απ’ αυτούς περνούσε.

7 Της Κουσάν βλέπω τις σκηνές

να χαμηλώνουν από φόβο·

και τρέμουν τα σκηνώματα της Μαδιάμ.

8 Κύριε, ενάντια σε ποιον στρέφεται ο θυμός σου;

Μήπως ενάντια στους ποταμούς ή στη βαθιά τη θάλασσα,

ώστε ν’ ανεβαίνεις πάνω στ’ άλογά σου,

στις άμαξές σου που στη νίκη σε οδηγούν;

9 Βγάλε το τόξο σου,

βάλε τα βέλη στη χορδή. (Διάψαλμα)

Σχίζεις τη γη κι αναπηδούν ποτάμια.

10 Σε βλέπουν τα βουνά και τρέμουνε,

κατακλυσμός νερών ποτίζουνε τη γη·

η άβυσσος κάτω απ’ τη γη μουγκρίζει

τα κύματά της ανεβαίνουνε ψηλά.

11 Ο ήλιος και το φεγγάρι σταθμεύουν

στην κατοικία τους.

Κρύβονται μπρος στα φωτεινά σου βέλη που σφυρίζουν,

μπροστά στις εκτυφλωτικές της λόγχης σου αστραπές.

12 Δρασκελάς με θυμό τη γη,

στην οργή σου καταπατείς τα έθνη.

13 Βγήκες για να βοηθήσεις το λαό σου,

για να σώσεις τον εκλεκτό σου.

Τη στέγη γκρέμισες από το μέγαρο του ασεβή,

ξεσκέπασες πλήρως τα θεμέλια. (Διάψαλμα)

14 Οι αρχηγοί του θέλανε να μας διασκορπίσουν·

όρμησαν σαν ανεμοστρόβιλος,

με χαρά πως στο κρυσφύγετό τους θα μας μεταφέρουν,

έτοιμοι κρυφά να θυσιάσουνε τα θύματά τους.

Εσύ όμως διατρύπησες τα κεφάλια τους

με τις ίδιες τους τις λόγχες.

15 Με τ’ άλογά σου ανοίγεις δρόμο να περάσεις

μέσα από τ’ αφρισμένα κύματα της θάλασσας.

16 Όταν ο Κύριος μ’ έκανε να τα δω όλα αυτά,

με συνεπήρε τρόμος·

σαν άκουσα αυτή τη δυνατή φωνή

τα χείλη μου άρχισαν να τρεμοπαίζουν·

τα γόνατά μου λύγισαν

κι όλο το σώμα μου διαλύθηκε.

Ακόμα πρέπει να περιμένω ακίνητος

τη μέρα που καταστροφή θα φέρει

στο λαό που μας επιτίθεται.

17 Κι αν τώρα οι συκιές δεν έχουν πια καρπό,

σταφύλια κι αν δεν δίνουνε τ’ αμπέλια,

κι αν απομένουν άκαρπες οι ελιές

και δε βγαίνουν σοδειές απ’ τα χωράφια,

κι αν πρόβατα δεν έχουν τα μαντριά

και δεν υπάρχουνε βόδια στους στάβλους,

18 ωστόσο εγώ θ’ αναγαλλιάζω για τον Κύριο,

θα χαίρομαι γιατί ο Θεός με βοηθάει.

19 Ο Κύριος είν’ ο Θεός μου,

είναι η δύναμή μου!

Με κάνει σαν το ελάφι γοργοπόδαρο,

φέρνει τα βήματά μου στις κορφές.
