1 Μήνυμα του Θεού που δόθηκε στον προφήτη Αββακούμ.

2 Ως πότε, Κύριε, θα σου φωνάζω για βοήθεια, κι εσύ δε θα με ακούς; Σου κράζω για την αδικία που επικρατεί, μα εσύ δεν επεμβαίνεις! 3 Γιατί κάνεις να βλέπω τόση ανομία; Γιατί παρατηρείς τη δυστυχία χωρίς να κάνεις τίποτα; Καταστροφή και βία με τριγυρίζουν, παντού φιλονικίες και διαμάχες. 4 Οι νόμοι μοιάζουν αδρανείς, επικρατεί η αδικία. Ο ασεβής δικαιώνεται σε βάρος του αθώου. Οι αποφάσεις των δικαστών είναι διεστραμμένες.

5 Ο Κύριος απαντάει: «Στρέψτε το βλέμμα σας στα έθνη και κοιτάξτε! Θα τα χάσετε, γιατί κάτι στις μέρες σας θα συμβεί, που δε θα το πιστεύατε αν κάποιος σας το διηγόταν. 6 Ξεσηκώνω τους Βαβυλώνιους εγώ, αυτό το έθνος το σκληρό κι αδίστακτο, που διασχίζει όλη τη γη, γυρεύοντας να κατακτήσει ξένες χώρες. 7 Είναι φοβεροί και τρομεροί· νόμος τους είναι του ισχυρότερου το δίκαιο. 8 Ταχύτερα κι απ’ τις λεοπαρδάλεις τ’ άλογά τους, κι απ’ ό,τι οι λύκοι μες στη νύχτα αγριότερα τ’ άλογά τους ιππεύουν· έρχοντ’ από μακριά οι καβαλλαραίοι τους, ορμητικά πετούν σαν τον αετό που ρίχνεται στη λεία του. 9 Έτσι κι αυτοί ορμούν στη λεηλασία. Πίσω τους δεν κοιτούν. Συνάζουν αιχμαλώτους σαν την άμμο. 10 Τους βασιλιάδες κοροϊδεύουν, τους κυβερνήτες περιγελούν. Κανένα φρούριο δεν τους εντυπωσιάζει, φτιάχνουν κάθε φορά ανάχωμα κι εύκολα το κυριεύουν. 11 Όλα τα σαρώνουν, όπως ο άνεμος, και προχωρούν πιο πέρα αυτοί οι ένοχοι, που έχουν την ισχύ τους για θεό».

12 Κύριε, εσύ δεν είσαι ανέκαθεν ο Άγιος Θεός μας; Δε θα πεθάνουμε! Κύριε, εσύ κάλεσες τους Βαβυλώνιους να εκτελέσουν την απόφασή σου· εσύ, προστάτη μας, τους όρισες να μας τιμωρήσουν. 13 Τα μάτια σου είναι τόσο καθαρά, που δεν μπορούνε το κακό να ανεχθούν ούτε την καταπίεση. Πώς τότε βλέπεις τους ληστές να εγκληματούν και δε μιλάς όταν καταβροχθίζει ο ασεβής τον δικαιότερό του, 14 και κάνεις τους ανθρώπους σαν τα ψάρια της θάλασσας, σαν τα ερπετά, που δεν έχουν κανέναν για οδηγό τους; 15 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι συλλαμβάνουν με το αγκίστρι τους λαούς, τους σέρνουν μες στο δίχτυ τους. Και χαίρονται γι’ αυτό κι ευχαριστιούνται. 16 Γι’ αυτό θυσιάζουνε στα δίχτυα τους και καίνε θυμίαμα μπροστά τους, γιατί μ’ αυτά εξασφαλίζουν την τροφή τους, τροφή που είναι γευστική και πλούσια. 17 Άραγε είναι αυτός ο λόγος που τραβούν πάντα το ξίφος και που εξοντώνουν δίχως λύπη τους λαούς;

5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. 6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs.*1.6 breadth: Heb. breadths 7 They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.*1.7 their judgment…: or, from them shall proceed the judgment of these, and the captivity of these 8 Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat.*1.8 fierce: Heb. sharp 9 They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand.*1.9 their…: or, the supping up of their faces, etc: or, their faces shall look (Heb. the opposition of their faces) toward the east 10 And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it. 11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god.

12 Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die.
