1 Εγώ είπα: «Θα πάρω θέση, θα σταθώ στη σκοπιά μου και στην πολεμίστρα μου και θα προσμένω για να δω τι θα μου πει ο Θεός για να πω, και ποια θα πρέπει απάντηση να δώσω στο παράπονο που διατύπωσα».

2 Και μου αποκρίθηκε ο Κύριος: «Αυτό που τώρα σου αποκαλύπτω, γράψ’ το σε πλάκες με καθαρή γραφή, έτσι που όλοι να το διαβάζουν εύκολα. 3 Αυτό που σου αποκαλύπτω δεν θα εκπληρωθεί αμέσως, σίγουρα όμως κάποτε θα πραγματοποιηθεί. Περίμενε με υπομονή ωσότου να συμβεί. Γράψε, λοιπόν, τώρα:

4 »"Αυτός που είναι άπιστος θα καταστραφεί.*Αυτός... καταστραφεί. Το νόημα του εβραϊκού είναι ασαφές. Αυτός όμως που μου είναι πιστός και πράττει το δίκαιο, θα ζήσει. 5 Πράγματι, όποιος καυχιέται ότι είναι απατεώνας, αυτός ο άνθρωπος ο αλαζονικός ποτέ δε μένει ήσυχος, ακόμη κι αν ανοίξει το στόμα του ωσάν τον άδη ή είναι σαν το θάνατο αχόρταγος, ακόμη κι αν καταπιεί όλα τα έθνη το ένα μετά το άλλο"».

6 Όλα τα έθνη θ’ απαγγείλουν ενάντια στον κατακτητή τους περιφρονητικά υπονοούμενα. Θα πουν:

«Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνον που μαζεύει ό,τι δεν του ανήκει –αλήθεια, ως πότε;– και τον καθένα τον μεταχειρίζεται σαν οφειλέτη του!» 7 Θα ξεσηκωθούν ξαφνικά οι πιστωτές σου· θα ξυπνήσουν αυτοί που καταπίεσες και θα σε λεηλατήσουν. 8 Έθνη εσύ λεηλάτησες πολλά, διέπραξες φόνους κι αδικίες σε τόσες χώρες, ενάντια στους κατοίκους τόσων πόλεων. Γι’ αυτό κι όλοι οι άλλοι λαοί θα λεηλατήσουν εσένα.

9 Θα πουν: «Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνον που μαζεύει κέρδη παράνομα για την οικογένειά του, και φτιάχνει τη φωλιά του ψηλά, για να γλιτώσει απ’ το αρπαχτικό το χέρι». 10 Και πράγματι, τα σχέδιά σου όλα θα φέρουν στη δυναστεία σου ντροπή. Καταστρέφοντας έθνη πολλά, τον ίδιο τον εαυτό σου καταστρέφεις. 11 Γιατί κι οι πέτρες από τους τοίχους θα φωνάξουν και οι ξυλοδεσιές θ’ αντιφωνήσουν.

12 «Αλίμονο», θα πουν, «σ’ εκείνον που χτίζει πόλεις με φόνους και που με αδικίες τις θεμελιώνει!» 13 Μάταια οι λαοί μοχθούν. Το έργο τους θα το καταστρέψει η φωτιά. Και όλα αυτά προέρχονται απ’ τον Κύριο του σύμπαντος. 14 Η γνώση της δόξας του Κυρίου θα γεμίσει τη γη, όπως γεμίζουν τα νερά, της θάλασσας το βάθος.

15 Θα πουν: «Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνον που ποτίζει το συνάνθρωπό του με της οργής του το μεθυστικό κρασί, για ν’ απολαύσει έπειτα τον εξευτελισμό του!» 16 Με ατιμία θα κορεσθείς κι όχι με δόξα. Σειρά σου τώρα να πιεις, και να ξεγυμνωθείς. Ο Κύριος θα σου δώσει ν’ αδειάσεις το ποτήρι της οργής του, και τότε η ντροπή θα επισκιάσει τη δόξα σου. 17 Κατέστρεψες τα δάση του Λιβάνου, τα ζώα του εξολόθρευσες. Όλα αυτά θα πέσουν πάνω σου και θα τιμωρηθείς για τους φόνους που διέπραξες σε τόσες χώρες και στους κατοίκους τόσων πόλεων.

18 Τι ωφελεί το είδωλο που έφτιαξε ο τεχνίτης; η χυτή εικόνα, που διδάσκει μόνο ψέματα; Πώς μπορεί ο άνθρωπος να έχει εμπιστοσύνη στους άφωνους θεούς που ο ίδιος κατασκεύασε; 19 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνον που λέει στο ξύλο: «Ξύπνα» και στο νεκρό λιθάρι: «Πάρε ζωή!» Αυτό θα προφητέψει; Με μάλαμα είναι καλυμμένο και με ασήμι, αλλά ζωή σταλιά δεν έχει μέσα του. 20 Ο Κύριος όμως είν’ εκεί, στον άγιο του ναό. Όλη η γη ας μείνει σιωπηλή μπροστά του!

5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:*2.5 Yea…: or, How much more 6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!*2.6 Woe…: or, Ho, he 7 Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them? 8 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.*2.8 blood: Heb. bloods

12 Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!*2.12 blood: Heb. bloods 13 Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity?*2.13 for…: or, in vain? 14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.*2.14 with…: or, by knowing the glory

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! 16 Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.*2.16 with…: or, more with shame than with glory 17 For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
