1 Αλίμονο στην πόλη με τα τόσα φονικά! Είναι γεμάτη απάτη και ψευτιά· είναι γεμάτη λάφυρα και λεηλατεί ακόμα. 2 Άκου! Των μαστιγίων πλαταγισμοί, κρότοι τροχών και καλπασμοί αλόγων, ταρακουνήματα αμαξών. 3 Κοίτα! Οι καβαλάρηδες ορμούν, τα ξίφη λαμπυρίζουν, οι λόγχες αστραποβολούν· πλήθος οι πληγωμένοι, σωρός τα πτώματα, αναρίθμητοι οι νεκροί, σκοντάφτουνε πάνω στους σκοτωμένους! 4 Και όλα αυτά εξαιτίας της Νινευή, της πόρνης και της μάγισσας, που σαγηνεύει με τα κάλλη της και τις μαγείες της τα έθνη.

5 «Φυλάξου, Νινευή! Έρχομαι καταπάνω σου!» λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος. «Θα σου σηκώσω το χιτώνα ως το πρόσωπο και στα έθνη τη γύμνια σου θα δείξω· θα δούνε την κατάντια σου. 6 Θα ρίξω πάνω σου βρωμιές, θα σε ντροπιάσω, θα σε διαπομπεύσω. 7 Όσοι σε βλέπουνε θα φεύγουνε μακριά σου και θα λέν’: "πώς ερημώθηκε η Νινευή! Ποιος θα τη λυπηθεί;" Κανείς δε θα βρεθεί να σε παρηγορήσει!»

8 Νομίζεις πως η τύχη σου θα ’ναι καλύτερη απ’ των Θηβών, της πολιτείας που βρίσκεται κοντά στο Νείλο κι έχει πολλές θάλασσες γύρω της για προστασία;*Οι Θήβες ήταν πόλη της άνω Αιγύπτου. Το 663 π.Χ. η πόλη είχε αλωθεί και λεηλατηθεί από τον Ασσύριο βασιλιά Ασσουρμπανιπάλ.9 Αιθίοπες κι Αιγύπτιοι αναρίθμητοι ήταν οι υπερασπιστές της. Άνθρωποι από την Πουτ*Πουτ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Ησ 66:19. και Λίβυοι ήταν οι σύμμαχοί της. 10 Κι ωστόσο οι κάτοικοί της στην εξορία οδηγηθήκανε. Αλυσοδέσαν οι κατακτητές τους άρχοντές της και τους μοιράστηκαν με κλήρο μεταξύ τους. Τα νήπια τα θανάτωσαν στων δρόμων τις γωνιές. 11 Έτσι κι εσύ το ποτήρι θα πιεις της οργής του Κυρίου και θα μεθύσεις μ’ αυτό. Μάταια θα ψάχνεις να ’βρεις καταφύγιο για να γλιτώσεις από τον εχθρό.

12 Τα φρούριά σου όλα θα ’ναι σαν τις συκιές και οι υπερασπιστές τους σαν σύκα παραγινωμένα. Όταν κανείς τινάξει τη συκιά, τα σύκα θα πέσουν κατευθείαν στο στόμα του. 13 Οι ισχυροί άντρες σου θα γίνουν γυναικούλες. Η χώρα σου θα μείνει απροστάτευτη, ανοιχτή στους εχθρούς σου. Τα φρούριά σου θα τα καταφάει η φωτιά. 14 Φρόντισε, Νινευή, να έχεις αποθέματα νερού για την πολιορκία, ενίσχυσε τα τείχη σου, κάνε λάσπη και καλούπια για να φτιάξεις πλίθρες. 15 Κι ενώ αυτά θα κάνεις, θα σε αφανίσει η φωτιά, ο πόλεμος θα σε εξολοθρεύσει. Όσο κι αν έχουν γίνει οι κάτοικοί σου πολυάριθμοι σαν τις ακρίδες, θ’ αφανιστούν όπως τα χόρτα απ’ τις ακρίδες. 16 Οι έμποροί σου ήταν περισσότεροι κι απ’ τ’ ουρανού τ’ αστέρια! Αλλά χαθήκαν ξαφνικά, σαν τις ακρίδες που φτερά απλώνουν και πετάνε. 17 Οι επόπτες σου ήταν σαν τις ακρίδες και οι διοικητές σου σαν κοπάδι ακριδομάνες, που κάθονται με κρύον καιρό πάνω στους φράχτες. Βγαίνει ο ήλιος και πετούν. Κανείς δεν ξέρει κατά πού πάνε.

18 Κοιμήθηκαν για πάντα οι άρχοντές σου, των Ασσυρίων βασιλιά! Οι στρατηγοί σου δε σαλεύουν πια. Οι πολεμιστές σου έχουν σκορπίσει στα βουνά· δεν είν’ κανείς να τους συνάξει. 19 Δε βρίσκουν γιατρειά τα τραύματά σου· κι έχεις θανατηφόρες τις πληγές. Εκείνοι που μαθαίνουν τα όσα έπαθες χειροκροτούν απ’ τη χαρά τους. Γιατί απ’ την επίμονη σκληρότητά σου ποιος ξέφυγε;
