1 Ο *Σε ορισμένες μετ. ο στ. 1 του παρόντος κεφ. αριθμείται ως 1:15 και συνεπώς οι στ. 2:1-14 αριθμούνται σ’ αυτές ως 2:1-13. – Ο σκληρός εχθρός είναι πιθανότατα ο βασιλιάς της Ασσυρίας. αγγελιοφόρος με τις καλές ειδήσεις τρέχει κιόλας απάνω στα βουνά, το μήνυμα να φέρει της ειρήνης. Γιόρταζε πάλι τις γιορτές σου, λαέ του Ιούδα! Εκπλήρωσε τα τάματά σου. Δε θα περάσει πια απ’ τη χώρα σου ο σκληρός εχθρός, γιατί έχει ολότελα εξοντωθεί. 2,3 Οι εχθροί ερήμωσαν τη χώρα, τ’ αμπέλια τα ξερίζωσαν. Αλλά ο Κύριος θα ξαναφέρει τον Ισραήλ στην πρωτινή του δόξα.

Έρχεται κιόλας ο χαλαστής να σε χτυπήσει, Νινευή. Ετοιμάσου για τη μάχη! Πάρτε τα όπλα σας! Λάβετε θέσεις! Βάλτε φρουρούς στο δρόμο. 4 Νάτοι έρχονται! Οι ασπίδες των πολεμιστών είναι βαμμένες κόκκινες σαν τη φωτιά. Το ίδιο φλογάτες είναι κι οι στολές τους. Αστραποκοπούν οι άμαξες έτοιμες να ριχτούν στη μάχη και πάλλονται τα δόρατα. 5 Οι άμαξες χιμούν μ’ άγρια ορμή στους δρόμους, αλληλοσυγκρούονται στις πλατείες, λες κι αναμμένοι είναι πυρσοί, αιφνίδιες αστραπές.

6 Μέσα στην πόλη ο βασιλιάς καλεί τους αντρειωμένους. Εκείνοι τρέχουν, μα στο δρόμο τους σκοντάφτουν. Οι πολιορκητές ορμούν στα τείχη· έτοιμη είναι η πολιορκητική τους μηχανή. 7 Οι πύλες προς τους ποταμούς*προς τους ποταμούς. Η Νινευή περιβαλλόταν από τον ποταμό Τίγρη και έναν παραπόταμό του· τα ανάκτορα προστατεύονταν από μια διακλάδωση αυτού του παραποτάμου. ξάφνου ανοίγονται κι οι άνθρωποι του παλατιού τα χάνουν. 8 Οι εχθροί διαπομπεύουν το βασιλιά δημόσια, γυμνώνουν τη βασίλισσα και μακριά τη στέλνουν. Θρηνούνε σαν τα περιστέρια οι δούλες της και στηθοδέρνονται. 9 Όλοι τρέχουν να φύγουν απ’ τη Νινευή, καθώς νερά από σπασμένο φράγμα. «Σταθείτε, σταθείτε!» φωνάζουν· κι ούτε να δει κανείς πίσω του, δε γυρνά. 10 Αρπάξτε ασήμι, πορθητές, χρυσάφι αρπάξτε! Η πόλη είναι γεμάτη θησαυρούς, πληθώρα τα πολύτιμα αντικείμενα. 11 Κούρσεμα, αρπαγή, ξολοθρεμός. Παντού καρδιές σε απόγνωση και γόνατα που τρέμουν, εξαντλημένα σώματα και πρόσωπα ωχρά.

12 Ήσουν κρυψώνα Νινευή, όπου αναπαυόταν το λιοντάρι*Το λιοντάρι ήταν το έμβλημα της Νινευή. και τα μικρά του με ασφάλεια. 13 Ξέσκιζε ο λέοντας το θήραμά του, για να το πάει στις λέαινες και στα μικρά του, και να το αποθηκεύσει στης κρυψώνας του τις γωνιές. Εκείνη η κρυψώνα τώρα τι απόγινε;

14 «Φυλάξου! Έρχομαι καταπάνω σου», λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος. «Θα μετατρέψω σε καπνό το πλήθος των κτισμάτων σου.*το πλήθος των κτισμάτων σου, σύμφωνα με ένα εβρ. χειρ και αρχαίες μετ. Το εβρ. έχει «τις άμαξές της». Τους νέους σου μαχαίρι θα τους πετσοκόψει, κι ό,τι αρπάξατε απ’ τους άλλους θα το εξαφανίσω από τη χώρα σας. Των αγγελιοφόρων σου η φωνή δε θ’ ακουστεί ξανά».

11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid? 12 The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin. 13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
