1 Μήνυμα ενάντια στη Νινευή· βιβλίο που περιέχει το όραμα του Ναούμ του Ελκεσαίου.

2 Δεν ανέχεται αντίζηλους ο Κύριος, ο Θεός!

Με φοβερό θυμό παίρνει εκδίκηση.

Τους αντιπάλους του ο Κύριος εκδικείται

κι ενάντια στους εχθρούς του οργίζεται.

3 Ο Κύριος έχει υπομονή και περιμένει·

δεν παραβλέπει όμως την αδικία·

έχει τη δύναμη να τιμωρεί.

Βαδίζει μέσα στον ορμητικό ανεμοστρόβιλο

κι είναι τα σύννεφα η σκόνη των βημάτων του.

4 Τη θάλασσα απειλεί και τη στεγνώνει,

κάνει να στερέψουν όλοι οι ποταμοί.

Ξεραίνονται τα βοσκοτόπια της Βασάν,

πεθαίνουνε τα δέντρα του Καρμήλου,

και τ’ άνθη του Λιβάνου μαραίνονται.

5 Μπροστά στον Κύριο τρέμουν τα βουνά,

ταρακουνιούνται οι λόφοι.

Έντρομη κραυγάζει η γη

μαζί της κι όλοι οι κάτοικοί της.

6 Ποιος υπομένει την οργή του;

Ποιος το θυμό του αντέχει το φλογερό;

Η οργή του σαν τη λάβα ξεχύνεται,

μπροστά του θρυμματίζονται οι βράχοι.

7 Αλλά ο Κύριος είν’ καλός

και καταφύγιο σε μέρα θλίψης.

Φροντίζει όσους σ’ εκείνον καταφεύγουνε

8 ακόμα και την ώρα του φοβερού κατακλυσμού.

Θα καταστρέψει όμως την πόλη

που επαναστατεί εναντίον του·

στον άδη τον τρισκότεινο

θα σπρώξει τους εχθρούς του.

9 Γιατί δεν εμπιστεύεστε τον Κύριο; Θα εξοντώσει πλήρως τους εχθρούς σας και δε θα σας καταπιέζουν πια. 10 Καθώς είναι μπλεγμένοι τώρα σαν τ’ αγκάθια και μεθυσμένοι απ’ το πολύ κρασί, θα φαγωθούν απ’ τη φωτιά εντελώς, καθώς κατάξερο άχυρο.

11 Από σένα, Νινευή, προέρχεται εκείνος που σκέφτεται πονηρά κι επαναστατεί ενάντια στον Κύριο. 12 Ακούστε, όμως, τώρα τι λέει ο Κύριος: «Όσο κι αν είναι οι εχθροί σας δυνατοί, όσο αναρίθμητοι κι αν είναι, θα θεριστούν κι αυτό θα ’ναι το τέλος τους. Εγώ σας έκανα να υποφέρετε, αλλά δε θα το επαναλάβω. 13 Θα σας λυτρώσω απ’ την κυριαρχία τους, θα σπάσω το ζυγό, που κάτω απ’ το βάρος του στενάζατε».

14 Ο Κύριος λέει στων εχθρών το βασιλιά: «Δε θα ’χεις απογόνους πια να συνεχίσουν τ’ όνομά σου. Μες στων θεών σου το ναό θα καταστρέψω τα είδωλα που είν’ από ξύλο κι από μέταλλο φτιαγμένα. Ο τάφος σου έχει κιόλας σκαφτεί· δεν έχεις πια δικαίωμα να ζεις».
