1 Αλίμονο σ’ εμένα! Μοιάζω μ’ εκείνον, που ύστερ’ από τη συγκομιδή ψάχνει να βρει κάτι να φάει μέσα στ’ αμπέλια. Δεν έχει απομείνει ούτε ρώγα, ένας καρπός που πεθύμησα να φάω. 2 Ούτε ένας δεν υπάρχει τίμιος στη χώρα, ούτε ένας στο Θεό να ’ναι πιστός. Παραμονεύουν όλοι τους να κάνουν φονικό, ο ένας τον άλλο κοιτάει να παγιδέψει. 3 Είναι όλοι τους ειδικευμένοι στο κακό. Ο ηγεμόνας απαιτεί αυξημένους φόρους. Δωροδοκείται να δικάσει ο δικαστής κι ο ισχυρός ζητάει με πονηριά να ικανοποιήσει την απληστία του.*Στο σημείο αυτό το εβρ. είναι ασαφές. Έτσι, όλοι μαζί έχουν διαστρέψει το δίκαιο. 4 Ο πιο καλός ανάμεσά τους κι ο πιο τίμιος είναι κι απ’ τ’ αγκαθόβατα πιο βλαβερός. Η μέρα της τιμωρίας σας έρχεται, η μέρα που οι προφήτες σας σάς έχουν αναγγείλει. Τότε σε αμηχανία θα βρεθείτε.

5 Μην εμπιστεύεστε το γείτονά σας ούτε το φίλο σας. Ακόμα και στη γυναίκα που αγαπάτε προσέξτε τι θα πείτε. 6 Έχετε φτάσει στο σημείο να περιφρονεί ο γιος τον ίδιο τον πατέρα του, η κόρη ενάντια στη μάνα της να επαναστατεί, η νύφη ενάντια στην πεθερά της· κι εχθροί του ανθρώπου να ’ναι του σπιτιού του οι άνθρωποι.

7 Εγώ όμως στον Κύριο αποβλέπω, ελπίζω στο Θεό που θα με σώσει. Θα με ακούσει ο Θεός μου.

8 Εχθροί του λαού μου, μην είσαστε χαιρέκακοι! Πέσαμε αλλά θα σηκωθούμε. Καθόμαστε μες στο σκοτάδι αλλά ο Κύριος είναι για μας το φως. 9 Πρέπει να υπομείνουμε το θυμό του Κυρίου, γιατί έχουμε αμαρτήσει εναντίον του. Αλλά και πάλι θ’ αναλάβει την υπεράσπισή μας και θ’ αποκαταστήσει το δίκιο μας. Θα μας οδηγήσει στο φως και τότε θα δούμε ότι μας έσωσε.

10 Οι εχθροί μας θα το δουν αυτό και θα ντροπιαστούν. Μας κορόιδευαν και μας έλεγαν: «Πού είναι τώρα ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας;» Τώρα όμως εμείς θα δούμε και θ’ απολαύσουμε την ήττα τους. Θα ποδοπατηθούν στο δρόμο σαν τη λάσπη.

11 Η μέρα έρχεται που θα ξαναχτιστούν τα τείχη σας. Τη μέρα εκείνη θα επεκταθούν τα σύνορά σας. 12 Τη μέρα εκείνη θα επιστρέψουνε κοντά σας οι συμπατριώτες σας από παντού: από την Ασσυρία ως την Αίγυπτο· από την Αίγυπτο ως τον ποταμό Ευφράτη· από τη μια ως την άλλη θάλασσα· κι από το ένα βουνό ίσαμε το άλλο. 13 Η γη όμως η υπόλοιπη θα ερημωθεί, εξαιτίας των κακών έργων που έπραξαν οι κάτοικοί της.*Το κείμενο των στ. 11-13 στο εβρ. είναι παρεφθαρμένο και το νόημά του ασαφές.

14 Ποίμαινε, Κύριε, το λαό σου με το ραβδί σου, τα πρόβατά σου που απομονωμένα ζούν σε τόπο άγονο, ενώ τριγύρω τους υπάρχει εύφορη γη· και πάλι στη Γαλαάδ και στη Βασάν βόσκησέ τα, καθώς τα χρόνια τα παλιά. 15 Θαύματα για μας κάνε*Θαύματα... κάνε. Το πιθανό κείμ. Το εβρ. έχει «Θαύματα γι’ αυτούς θα κάνω». και πάλι, όπως τότε που βγήκες μαζί μας απ’ την Αίγυπτο. 16 Τα έθνη ας δουν κι ας ντροπιαστούν, παρ’ όλη τους τη δύναμη. Ας μείνουν άφωνοι κι εμβρόντητοι. 17 Ας σέρνονται στη γη κι ας τρώνε χώμα σαν το φίδι. Έντρομοι ας βγαίνουν έξω απ’ τα ταμπούρια τους, σ’ εσένα, Κύριε Θεέ μας, για να ’ρθούν, γεμάτοι δέος και φόβο.

18 Ποιος άλλος Θεός είναι σαν κι εσένα, που συγχωρεί την ανομία και παραβλέπει την ασέβεια, όπως εσύ στο λαό σου που έχει επιζήσει; Το θυμό σου δεν τον κρατάς για πάντα, αλλά σ’ ευχαριστεί να δείχνεις την αγάπη σου. 19 Και πάλι θα μας σπλαχνιστείς και θα ποδοπατήσεις τις ανομίες μας. Στης θάλασσας τα βάθη θα ρίξεις όλες μας τις αμαρτίες. 20 Δείξε πιστότητα κι αγάπη σ’ εμάς, τους απογόνους του Αβραάμ και του Ιακώβ, όπως ορκίστηκες στους προγόνους μας απ’ τον πολύ παλιό καιρό.
