1 Αλλά από εσένα Βηθλεέμ, πόλη της περιοχής όπου κατοικεί η συγγένεια Εφραθά, αν και είσαι μια από τις πιο μικρές πόλεις του Ιούδα, εγώ θα κάνω να προέλθει εκείνος που θα γίνει άρχοντας του Ισραήλ. Η καταγωγή του είναι πολύ παλιά· ανάγεται στις αρχαίες μέρες. 2 Εγώ ο Κύριος θα παραδώσω το λαό μου στους εχθρούς του, ωσότου μια γυναίκα γεννήσει το αναμενόμενο παιδί. Τότε αυτοί που θα ζουν ακόμα στην αιχμαλωσία θα επιστρέψουν και θα ενωθούν με τους άλλους Ισραηλίτες. 3 Όταν έρθει εκείνος, θα τους οδηγήσει και θα τους προστατέψει με τη δύναμή μου, με τη μεγαλειώδη παρουσία του ίδιου του Θεού του. Θα ζήσουν με ασφάλεια, γιατί όλοι οι λαοί της γης θ’ αναγνωρίσουν τη μεγαλοσύνη του. 4 Αυτός θα φέρει την ειρήνη».

Όταν έρθουν οι Ασσύριοι στη χώρα μας και την καταπατήσουν, τότε θα ξεσηκώσουμε εναντίον τους πολλούς αρχηγούς και άρχοντες.*πολλούς... άρχοντες. Το εβρ. έχει: «εφτά βοσκούς και οκτώ άρχοντες». «Εφτά - οκτώ» στα εβρ. σημαίνει «πολλοί».5 Αυτοί θα κατακτήσουν με τα όπλα την Ασσυρία, τη χώρα των απογόνων του Νεμρώδ. Αν οι Ασσύριοι τολμήσουν να ’ρθουν στη χώρα μας και να παραβιάσουν τα σύνορά μας, τότε ο βασιλιάς μας θα μας σώσει.

6 Το υπόλοιπο των απογόνων του Ιακώβ είναι διεσπαρμένο ανάμεσα σε πολλούς λαούς καθώς δροσιά απ’ τον Κύριο, καθώς βροχή απάνω στο χορτάρι. Δε στηρίζει την ελπίδα του στους ανθρώπους και τίποτα δεν περιμένει απ’ αυτούς.

7 Το υπόλοιπο των απογόνων του Ιακώβ είναι ανάμεσα σε πολλά έθνη όπως ένα λιοντάρι ανάμεσα στου δάσους τα θεριά, σαν ένα λιονταρόπουλο ανάμεσα σε κοπάδι προβάτων. Όπου περνάει αρπάζει και ξεσκίζει· κανένας δεν μπορεί τη λεία του να του πάρει. 8 Το χέρι σου ύψωσε Ισραήλ, ενάντια στους εχθρούς σου που σε καταπιέζουν κι αφάνισέ τους!

9 Ο Κύριος όμως λέει: «Θα ’ρθει μια μέρα που θα εξαφανίσω τ’ άλογά σας, θα καταστρέψω τις πολεμικές σας άμαξες. 10 Θα καταστρέψω τις πολιτείες της χώρας σας και θα γκρεμίσω όλα τα οχυρά σας. 11 Θα εξαφανίσω τους μάγους σας και τα μαγικά τους.

12,13 »Θα καταστρέψω τα είδωλά σας, τις πέτρινες και τις ξύλινες λατρευτικές σας στήλες· θα πάψετε να προσκυνάτε τα κατασκευάσματά σας. Θα καταστρέψω και τις πόλεις σας. 14 Και τα έθνη που δε με υπακούν θα δοκιμάσουν το μεγάλο μου θυμό».

7 And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.

8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.*5.8 sheep: or, goats 9 Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off. 10 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots: 11 And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds: 12 And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers: 13 Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.*5.13 standing…: or, statues 14 And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.*5.14 cities: or, enemies 15 And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.
