1 Όταν αποπερατώθηκε το τείχος και τοποθετήθηκαν τα θυρόφυλλα, διόρισα τους θυρωρούς, τους ψάλτες και τους λευίτες στα καθήκοντά τους. 2 Ανέθεσα τη διοίκηση της Ιερουσαλήμ στον αδερφό μου τον Ανανία, καθώς και στον Ανανία το στρατιωτικό διοικητή του φρουρίου, άνθρωπο έμπιστο, που σεβόταν το Θεό περισσότερο από ό,τι πολλοί άλλοι. 3 Τους είπα: «Δε θ’ ανοίγετε τις πύλες της Ιερουσαλήμ πριν ζεστάνει ο ήλιος· και θα τις κλείνετε και θα τις ασφαλίζετε καλά το βράδυ, πριν ο λαός πάει για ύπνο. Θα τοποθετήσετε φρουρούς από τους κατοίκους της Ιερουσαλήμ, άλλους σε σκοπιές και άλλους σε περιπολίες σ’ όλη την περιοχή γύρω από τα σπίτια τους».

4 Η πόλη της Ιερουσαλήμ ήταν τότε ευρύχωρη κι εκτεταμένη· οι κάτοικοί της ήταν λιγοστοί και δεν είχαν χτιστεί ακόμα πολλά σπίτια.

5 Εκείνη την εποχή ο Θεός μου μού έβαλε την ιδέα να συγκεντρώσω τους προκρίτους, τους αξιωματούχους και τον υπόλοιπο λαό, για να κάνω απογραφή του λαού. Βρήκα, λοιπόν, τους γενεαλογικούς καταλόγους εκείνων που είχαν έρθει πρώτοι από την αιχμαλωσία, κι εκεί ήταν καταχωρημένα τα εξής:

6 Οι παρακάτω είναι οι πολίτες της επαρχίας της Ιουδαίας, που γύρισαν από την αιχμαλωσία, αυτοί που ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ, βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας, τους είχε πάρει αιχμαλώτους. Όλοι αυτοί επέστρεψαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στην Ιουδαία, καθένας στην πόλη του. 7 Στην πορεία της επιστροφής αρχηγοί τους ήταν οι Ζοροβάβελ, Ιησού, Νεεμίας, Αζαρίας, Ρααμίας, Ναχαμανί, Μαρδοχαίος, Βιλσάν, Μισπερέθ, Βιγβαΐ, Νεχούμ και Βαανά.

Ακολουθεί κατάλογος κατά συγγένειες με τον αριθμό των αντρών του λαού του Ισραήλ που επέστρεψαν από την αιχμαλωσία:

8 Η συγγένεια του Φαρώς, δύο χιλιάδες εκατόν εβδομήντα δύο άντρες· 9 του Σεφατία, τριακόσιοι εβδομήντα δύο· 10 του Αράχ, εξακόσιοι πενήντα δύο· 11 του Φαχάθ-Μωάβ, δηλαδή οι απόγονοι του Ιησού και του Ιωάβ, δύο χιλιάδες οχτακόσιοι δεκαοχτώ· 12 του Ελάμ, χίλιοι διακόσιοι πενήντα τέσσερις· 13 του Ζαττού, οχτακόσιοι σαράντα πέντε· 14 του Ζακάι, εφτακόσιοι εξήντα· 15 του Βινούι, εξακόσιοι σαράντα οχτώ· 16 του Βεβαΐ, εξακόσιοι είκοσι οχτώ· 17 του Αζγάδ, δύο χιλιάδες τριακόσιοι είκοσι δύο· 18 του Αδωνικάμ, εξακόσιοι εξήντα εφτά· 19 του Βιγβαΐ, δύο χιλιάδες εξήντα εφτά· 20 του Αδίν, εξακόσιοι πενήντα πέντε· 21 του Ατέρ, δηλαδή του Εζεκία, ενενήντα οχτώ· 22 του Χασούμ, τριακόσιοι είκοσι οχτώ· 23 του Βεσαΐ, τριακόσιοι είκοσι τέσσερις· 24 του Χαρίφ, εκατόν δώδεκα 25 και του Γαβαών, ενενήντα πέντε.

26 Πίνακας κατά πόλεις στις οποίες είχαν ζήσει οι πρόγονοι εκείνων που επέστρεψαν:

Από τη Βηθλεέμ και τη Νετωφά, εκατόν ογδόντα οχτώ άντρες· 27 από την Αναθώθ, εκατόν είκοσι οχτώ· 28 από τη Βαιθ-Αζμαβέθ, σαράντα δύο· 29 από την Κιριάθ-Ιαρίμ, την Κεφιρά και τη Βερώθ, εφτακόσιοι σαράντα τρεις· 30 από τη Ραμά και τη Γεβά, εξακόσιοι είκοσι ένας· 31 από τη Μιχμάς, εκατόν είκοσι δύο· 32 από τη Βαιθήλ και τη Γαι, εκατόν είκοσι τρεις· 33 από μια άλλη πόλη Νεβώ, πενήντα δύο· 34 οι απόγονοι ενός άλλου Ελάμ, χίλιοι διακόσιοι πενήντα τέσσερις· 35 οι απόγονοι του Χαρίμ, τριακόσιοι είκοσι· 36 από την Ιεριχώ, τριακόσιοι σαράντα πέντε· 37 από τη Λοδ, τη Χαδίδ και την Ωνώ, εφτακόσιοι είκοσι ένας 38 κι από τη Σεναά, τρεις χιλιάδες εννιακόσιοι τριάντα.

39 Ακολουθεί πίνακας των ιερατικών συγγενειών, που επέστρεψαν από την αιχμαλωσία:

Η συγγένεια του Ιεδαΐα (απόγονοι του Ιησού), εννιακόσιοι εβδομήντα τρεις άντρες· 40 του Ιμμήρ, χίλιοι πενήντα δύο· 41 του Πασχούρ, χίλιοι διακόσιοι σαράντα εφτά 42 και του Χαρίμ, χίλιοι δεκαεφτά.

43 Οι συγγένειες των λευιτών που επέστρεψαν ήταν:

Του Ιησού και του Καδμιήλ (απόγονοι του Ωδευά), εβδομήντα τέσσερις άντρες.

44 Την ομάδα των ψαλτών την αποτελούσαν οι απόγονοι του Ασάφ, εκατόν σαράντα οχτώ άντρες.

45 Οι συγγένειες των θυρωρών ήταν:

Του Σαλλούμ, του Ατέρ, του Ταλμών, του Ακκούβ, του Χατιτά και του Σωβαΐ, εκατόν τριάντα οχτώ.

46 Οι συγγένειες των υπηρετών του ναού ήταν:

Του Σιχά, του Χασουφά, του Ταββαώθ· 47 του Κερώς, του Σιαά, του Φαδών, 48 του Λεβανά, του Χαγαβά, του Σαλμαΐ, 49 του Χανάν, του Γιδδήλ, του Γαχάρ, 50 του Ρεαΐα, του Ρεσίν, του Νεκωδά, 51 του Γαζζάμ, του Ουζζά, του Φασεάχ, 52 του Βεσαΐ, του Μεουνίμ, του Νεφουσίμ, 53 του Βακββούκ, του Χακουφά, του Χαρχώρ, 54 του Βασλούθ, του Μεχιδά, του Χαρσά, 55 του Βαρκώς, του Σίσερα, του Θάμαχ, 56 του Νεσιάχ και του Χατιφά.

57 Οι συγγένειες των δούλων του Σολομώντα*των δούλων του Σολομώντα. Βλ. υποσ. εις Εσδ 2:55. ήταν:

Του Σωταΐ, του Σωφέρεθ, του Φερουδά, 58 του Ιααλά, του Δαρκών, του Γιδδήλ, 59 του Σεφατία, του Χαττίλ, του Φοχερέθ-Σεβαΐμ, του Αμών.

60 Όλοι μαζί οι απόγονοι των υπηρετών του ναού και των δούλων του Σολομώντα ήταν τριακόσιοι ενενήντα δύο·

61 Από τις πόλεις Τελ-Μελάχ, Τελ-Χαρσά, Χερούβ-Αδδών και Ιμμέρ επέστρεψαν ιερατικές συγγένειες, οι οποίες όμως δεν μπόρεσαν να φέρουν τις απαραίτητες πληροφορίες για τις οικογένειες των προγόνων τους, ώστε ν’ αποδείξουν ότι κατάγονταν από Ισραηλίτες. 62 Αυτοί ήταν απόγονοι του Δελαΐα, του Τωβία και του Νεκωδά, σύνολο εξακόσιοι σαράντα δύο άντρες.

63 Το ίδιο συνέβη με ορισμένους άλλους απογόνους ιερέων: Του Χαβαΐα, του Ακκώς, του Βαρζιλλαΐ (ο οποίος ονομαζόταν έτσι, γιατί είχε πάρει γυναίκα του μια από τις κόρες του Γαλααδίτη Βαρζιλλαΐ). 64 Όλοι αυτοί αναζήτησαν την εγγραφή τους στους γενεαλογικούς καταλόγους των προγόνων τους, αλλά δε βρέθηκαν εκεί· έτσι αποκλείστηκαν από την ιεροσύνη. 65 Ο ίδιος ο κυβερνήτης Τιρσαθά τους απαγόρευσε να τρώνε από τις αγιότατες προσφορές, ωσότου ένας ιερέας συμβουλευτεί τα Ουρίμ και τα Θουμμίμ.*Ουρίμ και τα Θουμμίμ. 66 Όλη η σύναξη μαζί έφτανε τους σαράντα δύο χιλιάδες τριακόσιους εξήντα άντρες, 67 εκτός από τους δούλους τους, άντρες και γυναίκες, που έφταναν τις εφτά χιλιάδες τριακόσια τριάντα εφτά άτομα· επίσης υπήρχαν διακόσιοι σαράντα πέντε ψάλτες και ψάλτριες. 68 Μαζί τους είχαν τετρακόσιες τριάντα πέντε καμήλες και έξι χιλιάδες εφτακόσια είκοσι γαϊδούρια.

69 Μερικοί αρχηγοί οικογενειών έκαναν προαιρετικές εισφορές για το έργο της ανοικοδόμησης. Ο κυβερνήτης έδωσε στο θησαυροφυλάκιο χίλιους χρυσούς δαρεικούς,*δαρεικούς. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Χρ 29:7. πενήντα κύπελλα και πεντακόσιες τριάντα ιερατικές στολές. 70 Και άλλοι από τους αρχηγούς των οικογενειών έδωσαν στο θησαυροφυλάκιο για το έργο είκοσι χιλιάδες χρυσούς δαρεικούς και δύο χιλιάδες διακόσιες ασημένιες μνες. 71 Ο υπόλοιπος λαός έδωσε είκοσι χιλιάδες χρυσούς δαρεικούς, δύο χιλιάδες ασημένιες μνες και εξήντα εφτά ιερατικές στολές.

72 Οι ιερείς, οι λευίτες, οι θυρωροί, οι ψάλτες και μερικοί από το λαό, όπως υπηρέτες του ναού, και όλοι οι υπόλοιποι Ισραηλίτες εγκαταστάθηκαν στις πόλεις τους.

Όταν έφτασε ο έβδομος μήνας του χρόνου όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες είχαν πια εγκατασταθεί στις πόλεις τους.

And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein, 6 These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city; 7 Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. 63 And of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name. 64 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood. 65 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.*7.65 the Tirshatha: or, the governor

66 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore, 67 Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women. 68 Their horses, seven hundred thirty and six: their mules, two hundred forty and five: 69 Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.

70 And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.*7.70 some: Heb. part.*7.70 The Tirshatha: or, the governor 71 And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver. 72 And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pound of silver, and threescore and seven priests’ garments. 73 So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
