1 Έργα του Νεεμία, γιου του Χαχαλία.

Το μήνα Χισλεύ, του εικοστού έτους της βασιλείας του Αρταξέρξη,*Το εβρ. έχει μόνο «του εικοστού έτους». Ο Αρταξέρξης αναφέρεται στο κεφ. 2:1. Πρόκειται για τον Αρταξέρξη Α΄ (464-424 π.Χ.) Βλ. και υποσ. εις Εσδ 4:5. ενώ βρισκόμουν στα Σούσα, την πρωτεύουσα, 2 ήρθε από την Ιουδαία ο συμπατριώτης μου Ανανί με μερικούς άντρες. Τους ρώτησα για τους Ιουδαίους που επέζησαν και είχαν επιστρέψει από την αιχμαλωσία, καθώς και για την Ιερουσαλήμ. 3 Εκείνοι μου απάντησαν: «Όσοι επέζησαν από την αιχμαλωσία κι έχουν εγκατασταθεί πάλι στον τόπο τους, βρίσκονται σε μεγάλη δυστυχία και ταπείνωση· το τείχος της Ιερουσαλήμ είναι ερειπωμένο και οι πύλες της έχουν καταστραφεί από τη φωτιά». 4 Όταν άκουσα αυτά τα λόγια, έπεσα σε βαρύτατο πένθος για μέρες πολλές. Προσευχήθηκα στο Θεό του ουρανού 5 και είπα:

«Κύριε, Θεέ του ουρανού, μεγάλε και φοβερέ, εσύ τηρείς τη διαθήκη σου και δείχνεις την αγάπη σου σ’ εκείνους που σε αγαπούν και εφαρμόζουν τις εντολές σου. 6 Στρέψε, λοιπόν, το βλέμμα σου σ’ εμένα το δούλο σου κι άκουσε προσεκτικά την προσευχή που μέρα και νύχτα τώρα σου απευθύνω για μας τους Ισραηλίτες, τους δούλους σου, και σου ζητώ συγχώρηση για τις αμαρτίες που έχουμε διαπράξει. Πραγματικά, κι εγώ και οι πρόγονοί μου αμαρτήσαμε. 7 Ασεβήσαμε εναντίον σου και δεν τηρήσαμε τις εντολές σου, τους νόμους σου και τα προστάγματά σου, αυτά που έδωσες στο Μωυσή, το δούλο σου. 8 Θυμήσου όμως, σε παρακαλώ, το λόγο που είπες στο Μωυσή, το δούλο σου: "αν απιστήσετε, θα σας διασκορπίσω ανάμεσα στα έθνη· 9 αν όμως μετά επιστρέψετε σ’ εμένα και φροντίσετε να εφαρμόσετε τις εντολές μου, τότε, ακόμη κι αν είστε διασκορπισμένοι ως τις άκρες του κόσμου, θα σας ξαναφέρω από ’κει και θα σας συγκεντρώσω στον τόπο που έχω διαλέξει για να με λατρεύουν". 10 Αυτοί εδώ είναι δούλοι σου και λαός σου, που εσύ τους απελευθέρωσες με τη μεγάλη, την ακαταμάχητη δύναμή σου. 11 Σε παρακαλώ, Κύριε, άκουσε την προσευχή τη δική μου και των άλλων δούλων σου, που με χαρά σε τιμούν. Χάρισέ μου τώρα την επιτυχία και κάνε ο βασιλιάς να με αντιμετωπίσει ευνοϊκά».

Εκείνη την εποχή εγώ ήμουν οινοχόος*οινοχόος. Εκείνος που γεμίζει με κρασί το ποτήρι του βασιλιά. Πρόκειται για πολύ σπουδαίο υπούργημα στις βασιλικές αυλές της εποχής. του βασιλιά.

1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace, 2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

5 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: 6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned. 7 We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. 8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: 9 But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. 10 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. 11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.
