1-3 Την πρώτη μέρα του έβδομου μήνα συγκεντρώθηκε όλος ο λαός με κοινή απόφαση στην πλατεία που βρισκόταν μπροστά στην πύλη των Υδάτων. Εκεί ζήτησαν από τον Έσδρα, τον ιερέα και γνώστη του νόμου, να φέρει στη συγκέντρωση το βιβλίο του νόμου, που ο Κύριος τον είχε δώσει στους Ισραηλίτες μέσω του Μωυσή. Πράγματι, ο Έσδρας τον έφερε μπροστά στη συγκέντρωση, που αποτελείτο από άντρες, γυναίκες και παιδιά, άτομα που μπορούσαν να καταλάβουν αυτά που άκουγαν. Κι από τότε που ανέτειλε ο ήλιος μέχρι το μεσημέρι ο Έσδρας τούς διάβασε από το βιβλίο του νόμου, και όλος ο λαός άκουγε προσεκτικά.*πλατεία... Υδάτων. Πρέπει να βρισκόταν στα ΝΑ του ναού. – Σχετικά με τον Έσδρα βλ. υποσ. εις Εσδ 7:6.4 Ο Έσδρας στεκόταν πάνω σε μια ξύλινη εξέδρα, που είχε κατασκευαστεί για την περίσταση. Κοντά του από τα δεξιά στέκονταν οι Ματταθίας, Σεμαΐας, Ανανίας, Ουρίας, Χελκίας και Μαασεΐας· στ’ αριστερά του στέκονταν οι Πεδαΐας, Μισαήλ, Μαλκίας, Χασούμ, Χασβαδανάς, Ζαχαρίας και Μεσουλλάμ.

5 Έτσι όπως στεκόταν ο Έσδρας ψηλότερα απ’ όλο το λαό, άνοιξε το βιβλίο μπροστά τους· κι όταν το άνοιξε, σηκώθηκαν όλοι όρθιοι. 6 Τότε ο Έσδρας δόξασε τον Κύριο, το μεγάλο Θεό, και όλος ο λαός απάντησε «αμήν, αμήν!» υψώνοντας τα χέρια. Ύστερα έσκυψαν τα κεφάλια τους και προσκύνησαν τον Κύριο με το πρόσωπο στη γη. 7 Μετά σηκώθηκαν, και οι λευίτες Ιησούς, Βανί, Σερεβίας, Ιαμείν, Ακκούβ, Σαββεθάι, Ωδίας, Μαασεΐας, Κελιτά, Αζαρίας, Ιωζαβάδ, Ανανίας και Πελαΐας τούς εξηγούσαν το νόμο. Κανένας δεν κουνήθηκε από τη θέση του. 8 Τους έκαναν προφορική μετάφραση*Το βιβλίο του νόμου ήταν γραμμένο στα εβραϊκά. Αλλά στη Βαβυλώνα ο λαός είχε μάθει την αραμαϊκή γλώσσα για την καθημερινή τους χρήση. Επομένως η μετάφραση ήταν απαραίτητη. του νόμου του Θεού και τους τον εξηγούσαν, για να καταλαβαίνει όλος ο λαός τι τους διάβαζαν.

9 Ο κυβερνήτης Νεεμίας και ο Έσδρας, ιερέας και γνώστης του νόμου, καθώς και οι λευίτες, που εξηγούσαν το κείμενο, είπαν στο λαό: «Η ημέρα αυτή είναι αφιερωμένη στον Κύριο το Θεό σας! Δεν είναι ώρα τώρα για κλάματα και πένθη», γιατί όλος ο λαός έκλαιγε ακούγοντας να διαβάζεται ο νόμος. 10 Ο Νεεμίας είπε ακόμα: «Πηγαίνετε στα σπίτια σας, φάτε από τα πιο εκλεκτά φαγητά, πιείτε γλυκό κρασί και στείλτε μερίδες σ’ όποιον δεν έχει τίποτε να ετοιμάσει! Η σημερινή μέρα είναι αφιερωμένη στον Κύριό μας! Και μη στενοχωριέστε, γιατί η χαρά που δίνει ο Κύριος είναι η δύναμή σας». 11 Το ίδιο και οι λευίτες καθησύχαζαν το λαό λέγοντάς τους: «Ηρεμήστε και μη στενοχωριέστε! Η σημερινή μέρα είναι αφιερωμένη στον Κύριο». 12 Έτσι όλος ο λαός έφυγε και πήγαν σπίτια τους να φάνε και να πιουν· έστειλαν και μερίδες φαγητού σ’ εκείνους που δεν είχαν να ετοιμάσουν τίποτα. Και πανηγύρισαν τη μεγάλη γιορτή, γιατί είχαν καταλάβει τα λόγια που τους εξήγησαν.

13 Την επόμενη μέρα, οι αρχηγοί των συγγενειών του λαού, οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες, πήγαν και συνάντησαν τον Έσδρα, το γνώστη του νόμου, για να μάθουν καλύτερα τι διδάσκει ο νόμος. 14 Βρήκαν, λοιπόν, γραμμένο στο νόμο που ο Κύριος είχε δώσει με το Μωυσή, μια διάταξη που έλεγε ότι οι Ισραηλίτες πρέπει να μείνουν προσωρινά σε σκηνές για να γιορτάσουν τη γιορτή της Σκηνοπηγίας τον έβδομο μήνα. 15 Αμέσως τότε έστειλαν διακήρυξη και προσκαλούσαν όλες τις πόλεις τους και την Ιερουσαλήμ: «Βγείτε στα βουνά», τους έλεγαν, «και φέρτε κλαδιά ελιάς, κλαδιά από κυπαρίσσια, από μυρσίνες, από φοινικιές κι από δέντρα πυκνόφυλλα, για να κατασκευάσετε σκηνές, όπως είναι γραμμένο». 16 Βγήκαν, λοιπόν, όλοι και έφεραν κλαδιά και κατασκεύασαν καθένας τη σκηνή του, στις αυλές και στις ταράτσες, στις αυλές του ναού του Θεού, στην πλατεία της πύλης των Υδάτων και στην πλατεία της πύλης του Εφραΐμ.*πύλης του Εφραΐμ Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 14:13.

17 Όλη η κοινότητα, όλοι εκείνοι που είχαν επιστρέψει από την αιχμαλωσία, κατασκεύασαν σκηνές κι έμειναν μέσα σ’ αυτές. Η χαρά τους ήταν πολύ μεγάλη, γιατί από τον καιρό του Ιησού, γιου του Ναυή, μέχρι εκείνη την ημέρα, οι Ισραηλίτες δεν είχαν γιορτάσει τη Σκηνοπηγία. 18 Διάβαζαν από το βιβλίο του νόμου του Θεού κάθε μέρα, από την πρώτη ως την τελευταία της γιορτής, η οποία διήρκεσε εφτά μέρες. Την όγδοη μέρα έγινε επίσημη συνάθροιση, σύμφωνα με την εντολή.

And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.*8.9 the Tirshatha: or, the governor 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved. 12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.*8.13 to understand…: or, that they might instruct in the words of the law 14 And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:*8.14 by: Heb. by the hand of 15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. 18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God.
