1 Την εικοστή τέταρτη μέρα του ίδιου μήνα, οι Ισραηλίτες άρχισαν νηστεία. Φορούσαν πένθιμα ρούχα και έριχναν χώμα στο κεφάλι τους.*χώμα στο κεφάλι τους. Εθιμική εκδήλωση πένθους. Δυνατόν όμως να σήμαινε (όπως εδώ) και εκδήλωση εκούσιας ταπείνωσης (πρβλ. Εσδ 9:3).2 Αυτοί είχαν χωριστεί από όλους τους μη Ιουδαίους που υπήρχαν στην περιοχή τους και είχαν συγκεντρωθεί για να εξομολογηθούν τις αμαρτίες τις δικές τους και των προγόνων τους. 3 Επί τρεις ώρες στέκονταν όρθιοι στις θέσεις τους κι άκουγαν την ανάγνωση από το βιβλίο του νόμου του Κυρίου, του Θεού τους· και για άλλες τρεις ώρες έμεναν γονατιστοί ενώπιον του Κυρίου του Θεού τους για να του ζητήσουν συγχώρηση.

4 Στο βήμα των λευιτών στάθηκαν ο Ιησούς, ο Βανί, ο Καδμιήλ, ο Σεβανίας, ο Βουννί, ο Σερεβίας, ο Βανί και ο Χενανί και ζήτησαν με δυνατή φωνή τη βοήθεια του Κυρίου, του Θεού τους. 5 Έπειτα οι λευίτες Ιησούς, Καδμιήλ, Βανί, Χασαβνίας, Σερεβίας, Ωδίας, Σεβανίας και Πεθαχίας είπαν:

«Σηκωθείτε και δοξολογήστε τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, ασταμάτητα! Ας είναι ευλογημένο το ένδοξο όνομά σου, Κύριε, αν κι οποιαδήποτε ανθρώπινη ευλογία και έπαινος είναι φτωχά για σένα!»

6 Μετά όλος ο λαός προσευχήθηκε:

«Εσύ ’σαι ο μόνος Κύριος!

Εσύ έκανες τον απέραντο ουρανό

κι όλα τ’ αστέρια του·

τη γη και ό,τι είναι πάνω της,

τις θάλασσες και ό,τι βρίσκεται σ’ αυτές·

κι εσύ δίνεις στα πάντα τη ζωή.

Τ’ αστέρια του ουρανού εσένα προσκυνούν.

7 »Εσύ είσαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός,

που διάλεξες τον Άβραμ

κι από την Ούρ, την πόλη των Χαλδαίων,

τον έβγαλες

κι όνομα του ’δωσες Αβραάμ.

8 Κι όταν διαπίστωσες πως σου ήτανε πιστός

διαθήκη σύναψες μαζί του,

για να του δώσεις τη χώρα των Χαναναίων,

των Χετταίων, των Αμορραίων,

των Φερεζαίων, των Ιεβουσαίων και των Γεργεσαίων,

για να ζήσουν οι απόγονοί του εκεί·

και τήρησες τους λόγους σου,

γιατ’ είσαι δίκαιος εσύ.

9 »Είδες τη θλίψη των προγόνων μας στην Αίγυπτο

κι άκουσες την κραυγή τους

στη Θάλασσα την Ερυθρά.

10 Πράγματα θαυμαστά έκανες και σημεία

ενάντια στο Φαραώ

και σ’ όλους τους ανθρώπους του,

ενάντια σ’ όλον το λαό της χώρας του·

γιατ’ ήξερες εσύ πως είχαν

αλαζονικά στους προγόνους μας φερθεί.

Έτσι έγινε το όνομά σου ξακουστό

και τέτοιο είναι μέχρι σήμερα.

11 Εσύ τους άνοιξες τη θάλασσα μπροστά τους

και πέρασαν μέσ’ απ’ αυτήν

σαν να ’τανε στεριά.

Κι εκείνους που τους καταδίωκαν

τους έριξες σαν πέτρα

μες στα βαθιά, τα ορμητικά νερά.

12 Με στήλη νεφέλης τη μέρα τους οδηγούσες

και με στήλη φωτιάς τους φώτιζες

το δρόμο μες στη νύχτα.

13 Κατέβηκες από τον ουρανό, στ’ όρος Σινά

και μίλησες μαζί τους·

τους έδωσες σωστά προστάγματα

και διδαχές αληθινές,

και τέλειους νόμους κι εντολές.

14 Τους έμαθες με το Μωυσή, το δούλο σου,

το άγιο σου το Σάββατο

κι όλες τις άλλες εντολές,

τους θεσμούς και το νόμο.

15 Ψωμί τους έδωσες από τον ουρανό

για να χορτάσουνε την πείνα τους,

κι από το βράχο έβγαλες νερό να ξεδιψάσουν·

τους έστειλες να πάν’ να κατακτήσουνε τη χώρα

που τους είχες τάξει να τους δώσεις.

16 »Οι πρόγονοί μας όμως φέρθηκαν

μ’ αλαζονία και σκληρότητα·

δε θέλησαν τις εντολές σου να τηρήσουν.

17 Αρνήθηκαν να υπακούσουν

και λησμόνησαν τα θαυμαστά σου έργα,

αυτά που έκανες εσύ ανάμεσά τους.

Επαναστατημένοι αποφάσισαν

στην Αίγυπτο και στη δουλεία τους να επιστρέψουν.

Εσύ ωστόσο είσαι Θεός που συγχωρείς,

σπλαχνίζεσαι, δείχνεις υπομονή,

είσαι γεμάτος απεριόριστη αγάπη,

και δεν τους εγκατέλειψες.

18,19 Χυτό μοσχάρι κατασκεύασαν

για να το προσκυνάνε,

κι είπαν: "αυτός είν’ ο Θεός μας

που απ’ την Αίγυπτο μας έβγαλε!"

Τόση έδειξαν ασέβεια μεγάλη.

Μα εσύ, απ’ την πολλή την ευσπλαχία σου,

και τότε ακόμα,

στην έρημο δεν τους εγκατέλειψες.

Στήλη νεφέλης τους οδηγεί στο δρόμο τους τη μέρα,

κι από κοντά τους δεν απομακρύνεται·

το ίδιο και η στήλη της φωτιάς,

που φώτιζε το δρόμο τους τη νύχτα.

20 Το Πνεύμα σου τους έδωσες το αγαθό,

για να τους συμβουλεύει·

το μάννα δεν τους στέρησες να τρώνε,

στη δίψα τους τούς έδωσες νερό.

21 Σαράντα χρόνια μες στην έρημο τους φρόντισες·

τίποτα δε στερήθηκαν·

τα ρούχα τους δεν έλιωσαν

ούτε τα πόδια τους πριστήκαν.

22 »Στην εξουσία τους παρέδωσες

βασίλεια και λαούς,

χώρες που συνορεύανε με τη δική τους.

Κυρίεψαν τη χώρα του Σιχόν, βασιλιά της Εσεβών,

και τη χώρα του Ωγ, βασιλιά της Βασάν.

23 Τους έδωσες παιδιά πολλά

σαν τ’ άστρα του ουρανού

και τα οδήγησες στη Χαναάν,

που ’χες προστάξει τους πατεράδες τους

να πάνε να την κατακτήσουν.

24 Οι γιοι τους μπήκαν και την πήρανε δική τους.

Της χώρας τους κατοίκους, τους Χαναναίους,

τους υποχρέωσες σ’ αυτούς να υποταχθούν

και τους παρέδωσες στην εξουσία τους

τους βασιλιάδες τους και τους λαούς της χώρας,

για να τους μεταχειριστούνε όπως

ήθελαν.

25 Κατέλαβαν οχυρωμένες πόλεις,

εδάφη εύφορα.

Σπίτια αποκτήσανε γεμάτα πλούτη,

με έτοιμα πηγάδια ανοιγμένα,

αμπέλια και λιοστάσια κι άφθονα δέντρα καρποφόρα.

Φάγανε και χορτάσανε,

παχύνανε και ζήσαν’ πλουσιοπάροχα

απ’ την πολλή σου καλοσύνη.

26 »Και μ’ όλα αυτά απείθησαν

και σήκωσαν παντιέρα εναντίον σου!

Αγνόησαν το νόμο σου και τους προφήτες σου,

που τους συμβούλευαν να επιστρέψουνε σ’ εσένα.

»Αυτοί τους σκότωσαν.

Τέτοια σού έδειξαν μεγάλη ασέβεια!

27 Τότε στην εξουσία των εχθρών τους τούς παρέδωσες,

κι αυτοί τους καταδυναστέψανε.

Στον καιρό της θλίψης τους

σ’ εσένα κράξαν’ για βοήθεια

κι εσύ τους άκουσες εκεί στον ουρανό.

Κι απ’ τη μεγάλη σου ευσπλαχνία ελευθερωτές τούς έστειλες,

που τους γλιτώσαν απ’ την εξουσία των εχθρών τους.

28 Αλλά μόλις ησύχασαν από την καταπίεση,

έπραξαν πάλι ό,τι σε δυσαρεστεί.

Τότε τους εγκατέλειψες στην εξουσία των εχθρών τους,

κι εκείνοι τους υπέταξαν.

Και όταν πάλι φώναξαν σ’ εσένα για βοήθεια,

εσύ τους άκουσες από τον ουρανό

και με το έλεός σου πολλές φορές τους ελευθέρωσες.

29 Τους παρακίνησες στο νόμο σου

ν’ αρχίσουν πάλι να υπακούν.

»Αυτοί όμως αλαζονεύτηκαν.

Δεν άκουσαν τις εντολές σου και παραβήκαν τα προστάγματά σου,

που ωστόσο δίνουνε ζωή σ’ αυτόν που τα εκτελεί.

Αδιαφόρησαν·

πάντα ισχυρογνώμονες αρνήθηκαν να σε υπακούσουν.

30 Εσύ για πολλά χρόνια τους ανέχθηκες

και τους συμβούλεψες με τους προφήτες σου,

που τους μιλούσε το δικό σου Πνεύμα.

Και πάλι όμως αυτοί δεν άκουσαν·

γι’ αυτό και τους παρέδωσες στην εξουσία ξένων λαών.

31 Μα απ’ τη μεγάλη σου αγάπη

δεν άφησες τελείως να αφανιστούν

και δεν τους εγκατέλειψες·

γιατί είσαι σπλαχνικός Θεός,

γεμάτος καλοσύνη.

32 »Και τώρα, Θεέ μας, Θεέ μεγάλε,

Θεέ ισχυρέ και φοβερέ,

εσύ που αξιόπιστα τηρείς τη διαθήκη σου

και εκδηλώνεις την αγάπη σου,

μην παραβλέψεις σαν ασήμαντες

όλες εκείνες τις ταλαιπωρίες

που βρήκανε εμάς, τους βασιλιάδες μας,

τους άρχοντές μας, τους ιερείς μας,

τους προφήτες μας, τους προγόνους μας,

όλο το λαό σου,

από την εποχή που μας καταπίεζαν οι βασιλιάδες της Ασσυρίας

μέχρι και σήμερα.

33 Με όλα, βέβαια, αυτά που μας βρήκανε,

εσύ δίκαια μας τιμώρησες·

αποδείχτηκες αξιόπιστος,

ενώ εμείς αμαρτήσαμε.

34 Οι βασιλιάδες μας, οι άρχοντές μας,

οι ιερείς μας και οι πρόγονοί μας

δεν τήρησαν το νόμο σου,

κι αδιαφορήσαν για τις εντολές σου

και για τις νουθεσίες σου.

35 Ακόμα κι όταν έγιναν βασίλειο,

παρ’ όλη τη μεγάλη καλοσύνη που τους έδειξες,

και την ευρύχωρη κι εύφορη χώρα που τους παραχώρησες,

αυτοί δεν σε λατρέψανε

ούτε παράτησαν τα έργα τους τα φαύλα.

36 Έτσι σήμερα εμείς είμαστε δούλοι·

δούλοι μέσα στην ίδια τούτη χώρα,

που είχες δώσει στους προγόνους μας

για ν’ απολαύσουν τους καρπούς και τ’ αγαθά της.

37 Τώρα η άφθονη παραγωγή της πάει στους βασιλιάδες,

που σ’ αυτούς μας υπέταξες εσύ,

γιατί αμαρτήσαμε.

Αυτοί εξουσιάζουνε κι εμάς τους ίδιους

το ίδιο με τα κτήνη μας

κατά πώς αυτοί θέλουν.

Και σε βαθιά βρισκόμαστε απόγνωση».

So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. 11 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12 Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven;
