1 Ενώ ο Έσδρας προσευχόταν γονατιστός μπροστά στο ναό του Θεού, και ζητούσε με κλάματα συγχώρηση, συγκεντρώθηκαν γύρω του μεγάλο πλήθος αντρών, γυναικών και παιδιών από το λαό. Κι όλος αυτός ο κόσμος έκλαιγε γοερά. 2 Τότε ο Σεχανίας, γιος του Ιεχιήλ, από τη συγγένεια του Ελάμ, πήρε το λόγο και είπε στον Έσδρα: «Αμαρτήσαμε στο Θεό μας, γιατί έχουμε πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες, από τους λαούς αυτής εδώ της χώρας. Υπάρχει όμως ακόμα ελπίδα για τους Ισραηλίτες. 3 Γι’ αυτό δίνουμε υπόσχεση στο Θεό μας να διώξουμε όλες τις αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες και τα παιδιά τους, σύμφωνα με την εντολή που μας έδωσε ο Κύριος κι εκείνοι που τηρούν με σεβασμό τις εντολές του. Ας εφαρμοστεί ο νόμος του Θεού μας. 4 Αυτό όμως είναι δικό σου έργο. Ξεκίνα, λοιπόν, κι εμείς είμαστε μαζί σου. Πάρε θάρρος και πράξε!»

5 Τότε ο Έσδρας όρκισε τους επικεφαλής των ιερέων-λευιτών και ολόκληρου του Ισραήλ ότι θα πράξουν σύμφωνα με όσα πρότεινε ο Σεχανίας. Κι αυτοί ορκίστηκαν. 6 Μετά ο Έσδρας έφυγε από την αυλή του ναού του Θεού και πήγε και διανυκτέρευσε στο δωμάτιο του Ιωχανάν, γιου του Ελιασείβ. Όλη τη νύχτα δεν έφαγε ούτε ήπιε αλλά θρηνούσε συνέχεια για την παράβαση που είχαν κάνει αυτοί που γύρισαν από την αιχμαλωσία.

7 Έπειτα κυκλοφόρησαν μια διακήρυξη στην Ιουδαία και στην Ιερουσαλήμ, σε όσους είχαν επιστρέψει από παλιά από την αιχμαλωσία και τους όριζαν να συγκεντρωθούν στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 8 Κι αν κάποιος δεν θα ερχόταν μέσα σε τρεις μέρες, σύμφωνα με τη διαταγή των αρχόντων και των ευγενών, θα δημευόταν η περιουσία του και ο ίδιος θα αποκλειόταν από την κοινότητα. 9 Έτσι, μέσα σε τρεις μέρες, συγκεντρώθηκαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ όλοι οι άντρες των φυλών Ιούδα και Βενιαμίν, την εικοστή μέρα του ένατου μήνα. Όλος ο λαός κάθισε στον ανοιχτό χώρο του ναού του Θεού, τρέμοντας εξαιτίας αυτής της υπόθεσης αλλά και εξαιτίας της δυνατής βροχής.

10 Ο ιερέας Έσδρας σηκώθηκε και τους είπε: «Εσείς έχετε αμαρτήσει που πήρατε αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες, με συνέπεια να προσθέσετε ενοχές σ’ όλο το λαό του Ισραήλ. 11 Τώρα, όμως, δοξάστε τον Κύριο, το Θεό των προγόνων σας, και εφαρμόστε το θέλημά του. Αποχωριστείτε από τους λαούς αυτής της χώρας και διώξτε τις αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες».

12 Όλη η συνάθροιση αποκρίθηκε με δυνατές φωνές: «Έτσι είναι! Θα πράξουμε όπως προστάζεις. 13 Αλλά εδώ ο κόσμος είναι πολύς και είμαστε στην εποχή των βροχών· δεν μπορούμε να παραμείνουμε σε ανοιχτό χώρο. Εξάλλου η παράνομη αυτή υπόθεση δεν είναι δυνατόν να τακτοποιηθεί σε μία ή δύο μέρες, γιατί είμαστε πολλοί που έχουμε εμπλακεί σ’ αυτήν. 14 Ας εκπροσωπήσουν τη συνέλευση οι αρχηγοί μας· και όλοι όσοι έχουν πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες ας έρθουν σ’ αυτούς μια ορισμένη μέρα μαζί με τους πρεσβυτέρους και τους δικαστές της πόλης τους. Έτσι θα σταματήσει ο φοβερός θυμός του Θεού μας εναντίον μας γι’ αυτή μας την πράξη».

15 Μόνον ο Ιωνάθαν, γιος του Ασαήλ και ο Ιαχζεΐας, γιος του Τικβά, αντέδρασαν σ’ αυτή την πρόταση, και τους υποστήριζαν ο Μεσουλλάμ και ο λευίτης Σαββεθάι. 16 Όλοι οι άλλοι Ισραηλίτες που είχαν επιστρέψει από την αιχμαλωσία, τη δέχτηκαν. Ο ιερέας Έσδρας διάλεξε για βοηθούς του τους αρχηγούς των συγγενειών, τον καθένα ονομαστικά. Και την πρώτη μέρα του δέκατου μήνα συνεδρίασαν για να εξετάσουν το ζήτημα. 17 Την πρώτη μέρα του πρώτου μήνα του επόμενου χρόνου είχαν τελειώσει με τη διερεύνηση όλων των περιπτώσεων που Ισραηλίτες είχαν πάρει γυναίκες αλλοεθνείς.

18 Οι ιερείς που βρέθηκε να έχουν πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες ήταν οι εξής:

Από τη συγγένεια του Ιησού, γιου του Ιωσαδάκ, και των αδερφών του, οι Μαασεΐας, Ελιέζερ, Ιαρίβ και Γεδαλίας. 19 Αυτοί έδωσαν τα χέρια και υποσχέθηκαν να διώξουν τις γυναίκες τους κι επίσης θυσίασαν ένα κριάρι από το κοπάδι τους για την εξιλέωση της ενοχής τους. 20 Από τη συγγένεια του Ιμμήρ, ο Ανανί και ο Ζεβαδίας. 21 Από τη συγγένεια του Χαρίμ, οι Μαασεΐας, Ηλίας, Σεμαΐας, Ιεχιήλ και Ουζίας. 22 Από τη συγγένεια του Φασχούρ, οι Ελιωεναΐ, Μαασεΐας, Ισμαήλ, Ναθαναήλ, Ιωζαβάδ και Ελασά. 23 Λευίτες: οι Ιωζαβάδ, Σιμεΐ, Κελαΐας (που ονομαζόταν και Κελιτά), Πεθαχίας, Ιούδας και Ελιέζερ. 24 Από τους ψάλτες ο Ελιασείβ, και θυρωροί οι Σαλλούμ, Τελέμ και Ουρεί. 25 Ο υπόλοιπος λαός: Από τη συγγένεια του Φαρώς, οι Ραμίας, Ιζζίας, Μαλκίας, Μιαμίν, Ελεάζαρ, Μαλκίας και Βεναΐας. 26 Από τη συγγένεια του Ελάμ, οι Ματτανίας, Ζαχαρίας, Ιεχιήλ, Αβδίας, Ιερεμώθ και Ηλίας. 27 Από τη συγγένεια του Ζαττού, οι Ελιωεναΐ, Ελιασείβ, Ματαναΐ, Ιερεμώθ, Ζαβάδ και Αζιζά. 28 Από τη συγγένεια του Βεβαΐ, οι Ιωχανάν, Ανανίας, Ζαββαΐ και Αθλαΐ. 29 Από τη συγγένεια του Βανί, οι Μεσουλλάμ, Μαλλούχ, Αδαΐας, Ιασούβ, Σεάλ και Ιεραμώθ. 30 Από τη συγγένεια του Φαχάθ-Μωάβ, οι Αδνά, Χελάλ, Βεναΐας, Μαασεΐας, Ματτανίας, Βεσαλεήλ, Βινούι και Μανασσής. 31 Από τη συγγένεια του Χαρίμ, οι Ελιέζερ, Ισσίας, Μαλκίας, Σεμαΐας, Συμεών, 32 Βενιαμίν, Μαλλούχ και Σεμαρίας. 33 Από τη συγγένεια του Χασούμ, οι Ματαναΐ, Ματατά, Ζαβάδ, Ελιφέλετ, Ιερεμαΐ, Μανασσής και Σιμεΐ. 34 Από τη συγγένεια του Βανί, οι Μααδαΐας, Αμράμ, Ουήλ, 35 Βεναΐας, Βεδαΐας, Κελλουΐ, 36 Βανίας, Μερημώθ, Ελιασείβ, 37 Ματτανίας, Ματαναΐ και Ιαασώ. 38 Από τη συγγένεια του Βινούι, οι Σιμεΐ, 39 Σελεμίας, Νάθαν, Αδαΐας, 40 Μαχναδεβαΐ, Σασαΐ, Σαραΐ, 41 Αζαρεήλ, Σελεμίας, Σεμαρίας, 42 Σαλλούμ, Αμαρίας και Ιωσήφ. 43 Από τη συγγένεια του Νεβώ, οι Ιεϊήλ, Ματαθίας, Ζαβάδ, Ζεβινά, Ιαδαύ, Ιωήλ και Βεναΐας. 44 Όλοι αυτοί είχαν πάρει αλλοεθνείς γυναίκες· μερικοί μάλιστα είχαν αποκτήσει και παιδιά απ’ αυτές.

6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. 7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; 8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.*10.8 forfeited: Heb. devoted

9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.*10.15 were…: Heb. stood 16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.
