1 Μια μέρα, όμως, ήρθαν ο προφήτης Αγγαίος και ο προφήτης Ζαχαρίας, απόγονος του Ιδδώ, και μίλησαν στους Ιουδαίους της Ιερουσαλήμ και της Ιουδαίας, εξ ονόματος του Θεού του Ισραήλ, που τους καθοδηγούσε. 2 Έτσι ο Ζοροβάβελ, γιος του Σαλαθιήλ, και ο Ιησούς, γιος του Ιωσαδάκ, άρχισαν να ξαναχτίζουν το ναό του Θεού, στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Μαζί τους ήταν κι οι προφήτες του Θεού και τους ενθάρρυναν.

3 Μετά από λίγον καιρό, όμως, ο Τατναΐ, κυβερνήτης της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη, ο Σεθάρ-Βοζνάι και οι συνάδελφοί τους ήρθαν και βρήκαν τους εργάτες και τους ρωτούσαν: «Ποιος σας έδωσε εντολή να ξαναχτίσετε το ναό και να τον περιτειχίσετε; 4 Ποιοι άλλοι συμμετέχουν στην ανοικοδόμηση;» 5 Ο Θεός όμως προστάτευε τους επικεφαλής των Ιουδαίων· έτσι, οι Πέρσες αξιωματούχοι δεν τους σταμάτησαν από το έργο τους ως την ημέρα που θα έστελναν αναφορά στο Δαρείο, για να λάβουν γραπτή απάντηση γι’ αυτό το ζήτημα. 6,7 Πράγματι, ο Τατναΐ, κυβερνήτης της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη,*της επαρχίας... Ευφράτη. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:10. ο Σεθάρ-Βοζνάι και οι συνάδελφοί τους αξιωματούχοι της επαρχίας έστειλαν στο βασιλιά Δαρείο ανοιχτή επιστολή-αναφορά, που το κείμενό της είχε ως εξής:

«Στο βασιλιά Δαρείο, ευχόμαστε κάθε ευτυχία.

8 »Πρέπει να πληροφορηθείς, βασιλιά, ότι εμείς πήγαμε στην επαρχία της Ιουδαίας, στο ναό του μεγάλου Θεού και διαπιστώσαμε πως ο ναός αυτός συνεχίζει να χτίζεται με μεγάλα λιθάρια· στους τοίχους τοποθετούνται ξύλα και η όλη εργασία προχωράει με ζήλο και παρουσιάζει θεαματική πρόοδο. 9 Ρωτήσαμε τους επικεφαλής του λαού ποιος τους είχε δώσει εντολή να ξαναχτίσουν το ναό και το τείχος. 10 Επίσης ζητήσαμε τα ονόματα των υπευθύνων, για να σε πληροφορήσουμε σχετικά.

11 »Πήραμε, λοιπόν, την ακόλουθη απάντηση: "εμείς είμαστε δούλοι του Θεού του ουρανού και της γης και ξαναχτίζουμε το ναό που είχε κατασκευαστεί πριν από πολλά χρόνια. Ένας μεγάλος βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ τον είχε χτίσει και τον είχε εξοπλίσει. 12 Αλλά επειδή οι πρόγονοί μας εξόργισαν το Θεό του ουρανού, αυτός τους παρέδωσε στην εξουσία του Ναβουχοδονόσορ της Βαβυλώνας, βασιλιά της δυναστείας των Χαλδαίων. Αυτός κατέστρεψε εκείνον το ναό και πήρε το λαό αιχμάλωτο στη Βαβυλώνα. 13 Αλλά το πρώτο έτος της βασιλείας του Κύρου στη Βαβυλώνα, ο βασιλιάς εκείνος έδωσε διαταγή να ξαναχτιστεί ο ναός του Θεού. 14 Επίσης, ο βασιλιάς Κύρος πήρε από το ναό της Βαβυλώνας τα χρυσά και τα ασημένια σκεύη του ναού του Θεού και τα παρέδωσε σε κάποιον που ονομαζόταν Σεσαβασσάρ και που ο ίδιος ο βασιλιάς τον διόρισε κυβερνήτη της Ιουδαίας. Τα σκεύη αυτά ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ τα είχε αφαιρέσει από το ναό της Ιερουσαλήμ και τα είχε τοποθετήσει στο ναό της Βαβυλώνας. 15 Ο Κύρος, λοιπόν, ανέθεσε στο Σεσαβασσάρ να παραλάβει τα σκεύη και να πάει να τα τοποθετήσει στο ναό της Ιερουσαλήμ, κι επίσης να δώσει την άδεια ανοικοδόμησης του ναού του Θεού στην παλιά του θέση. 16 Έτσι ο Σεσαβασσάρ ήρθε κι έβαλε τα θεμέλια του ναού του Θεού στην Ιερουσαλήμ, κι από τότε μέχρι σήμερα ο ναός ξαναχτίζεται και δεν τέλειωσε ακόμα".

17 »Τώρα, λοιπόν, αν σου φαίνεται καλό, βασιλιά, ας γίνει έρευνα στα βασιλικά αρχεία της Βαβυλώνας, για να διαπιστωθεί αν πραγματικά έχει εκδοθεί διαταγή από το βασιλιά Κύρο να ξαναχτιστεί ο ναός του Θεού στην Ιερουσαλήμ, και ας μας κοινοποιηθεί η απόφασή σου γι’ αυτό το ζήτημα».

1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them. 2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3 At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall? 4 Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?*5.4 make: Chaldee, build 5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

6 The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king: 7 They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.*5.7 wherein: Chaldee, in the midst whereof 8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.*5.8 great…: Chaldee, stones of rolling 9 Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls? 10 We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them. 11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up. 12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God. 14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;*5.14 governor: or, deputy 15 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place. 16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished. 17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
