1 Ο βασιλιάς Δαρείος*Δαρείος. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:5. έδωσε διαταγή να γίνει έρευνα στη Βαβυλώνα, στους χώρους όπου φυλάσσονταν τα αρχεία και τα πολύτιμα αντικείμενα. 2 Στα Εκβάτανα, λοιπόν, μια οχυρωμένη πόλη της επαρχίας της Μηδίας, βρέθηκε ένα κυλινδρικό βιβλίο, όπου ήταν γραμμένα τα εξής:

«Υπόμνημα. Το πρώτο έτος της βασιλείας του Κύρου, 3 ο βασιλιάς έβγαλε διαταγή να ξαναχτιστεί στην Ιερουσαλήμ ο ναός του Θεού, για να είναι τόπος όπου θα προσφέρονται θυσίες. Θα χτιστεί πάνω στα ίδια θεμέλια. Το ύψος και το πλάτος του θα είναι από εξήντα πήχεις 4 με μία σειρά ξύλα κάθε τρεις σειρές μεγάλα λιθάρια. Τα έξοδα θα πληρωθούν από τα ανάκτορα. 5 Επίσης, τα σκεύη του ναού του Θεού, τα χρυσά και τα ασημένια, που τα είχε πάρει ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ από το ναό της Ιερουσαλήμ και τα είχε φέρει στη Βαβυλώνα, να επιστραφούν, για να πάρουν πάλι τη θέση τους στο ναό του Θεού στην Ιερουσαλήμ».

6 «Τώρα λοιπόν Τατναΐ, κυβερνήτη της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη,*της επαρχίας... Ευφράτη. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:10. Σεθάρ-Βοζνάι και οι συνάδελφοί σας, οι αξιωματούχοι αυτής της επαρχίας, απομακρυνθείτε από ’κει. 7 Αφήστε ελεύθερο το έργο του ναού του Θεού. Αφήστε τον κυβερνήτη των Ιουδαίων και τους επικεφαλής τους να ξαναχτίσουν το ναό του Θεού στη θέση του.

8 »Εκδίδω και διαταγή σχετικά με την οικονομική βοήθεια που θα δώσετε εσείς στους επικεφαλής των Ιουδαίων για να ξαναχτίσουν το ναό του Θεού· τα έξοδα θα καταβληθούν σ’ αυτούς τους ανθρώπους αμέσως, χωρίς καμιά καθυστέρηση, από το βασιλικό ταμείο, δηλαδή από τους φόρους της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη.

9 »Επίσης, οτιδήποτε απαιτείται για τα ολοκαυτώματα του Θεού του ουρανού, μοσχάρια, κριάρια και αρνιά ή σιτάρι, αλάτι, κρασί και λάδι, θα τους τα δίνετε αμέσως σε καθημερινή βάση, όπως θα τα ζητούν οι ιερείς της Ιερουσαλήμ. 10 Έτσι θα μπορούν να προσφέρουν θυσίες που η ευωδιά τους ευχαριστεί το Θεό του ουρανού και να προσεύχονται για τη ζωή του βασιλιά και των παιδιών του.

11 »Ακόμη διατάζω για όποιον παραβεί αυτήν τη διαταγή, να ξεριζώσουν έναν πάσσαλο από το σπίτι του και πάνω σ’ αυτόν να τον κρεμάσουν· και το σπίτι του να γίνει σκουπιδότοπος εξαιτίας αυτής του της παράβασης. 12 Και ο Θεός, που θέλησε να λατρεύεται το όνομά του εκεί, ας ανατρέψει κάθε βασιλιά ή λαό, που θα επιχειρήσει να τροποποιήσει τη διαταγή μου με σκοπό να καταστρέψει αυτόν το ναό του Θεού στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Εγώ, ο Δαρείος, εξέδωσα διαταγή. Να εκτελεστεί με ακρίβεια».

13 Ο Τατναΐ, κυβερνήτης της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη, ο Σεθάρ-Βοζνάι και οι συνάδελφοί τους, έκαναν όπως ακριβώς τους παρήγγειλε ο βασιλιάς Δαρείος. 14 Έτσι, οι επικεφαλής των Ιουδαίων συνέχισαν την ανοικοδόμηση και προχωρούσαν καλά, με την ενθάρρυνση του προφήτη Αγγαίου και του προφήτη Ζαχαρία, γιου του Ιδδώ· και τελείωσαν το χτίσιμο, σύμφωνα με την εντολή του Θεού του Ισραήλ, και τα διατάγματα του Κύρου, του Δαρείου και του Αρταξέρξη, βασιλιάδων των Περσών.

15 Ο ναός αυτός συμπληρώθηκε την τρίτη μέρα του μήνα Αδάρ, το έκτο έτος της βασιλείας του Δαρείου. 16 Οι Ιουδαίοι, οι ιερείς, οι λευίτες και όλοι οι άλλοι που είχαν έρθει από την αιχμαλωσία, τέλεσαν με πανηγυρισμούς τα εγκαίνια του ναού του Θεού. 17 Με την ευκαιρία των εγκαινίων πρόσφεραν εκατό μοσχάρια, διακόσια κριάρια, τετρακόσια αρνιά και δώδεκα τράγους, έναν για κάθε φυλή του Ισραήλ, θυσία εξιλέωσης για την αμαρτία όλων των Ισραηλιτών. 18 Έπειτα διόρισαν τους ιερείς στις αρμοδιότητές τους και τους λευίτες στις θέσεις τους, για να υπηρετούν το Θεό στην Ιερουσαλήμ, σύμφωνα με τα γραμμένα στο βιβλίο του Μωυσή.

19 Όλοι όσοι είχαν επιστρέψει από την αιχμαλωσία γιόρτασαν το Πάσχα τη δέκατη τέταρτη μέρα του πρώτου μήνα. 20 Οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες εξαγνίστηκαν όλοι μαζί και ήταν όλοι καθαροί. Οι λευίτες ήταν έτσι σε θέση να θυσιάσουν τα αρνιά του Πάσχα για όλους τους αιχμαλώτους που είχαν επιστρέψει, για τους συγγενείς τους, για τους ιερείς, και για τον εαυτό τους. 21 Οι Ισραηλίτες που είχαν επιστρέψει από την αιχμαλωσία, έφαγαν το πασχαλινό αρνί μαζί με όλους όσοι είχαν παραμείνει στη χώρα αλλά είχαν εξαγνιστεί, προκειμένου να λατρεύσουν τον Κύριο, το Θεό των Ισραηλιτών. 22 Εφτά μέρες γιόρταζαν τη γιορτή των Αζύμων με πανηγυρισμούς, γιατί ο Κύριος τους έδωσε χαρά, μετατρέποντας τη διάθεση του βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας απέναντί τους, ώστε αυτός να τους βοηθήσει να ξαναχτίσουν το ναό του Θεού του Ισραήλ.

13 Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily. 14 And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.*6.14 commandment: Chaldee, decree 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

16 And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy,*6.16 the children of the captivity: Chaldee, the sons of the transportation 17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. 18 And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.*6.18 as it is…: Chaldee, according to the writing 19 And the children of the captivity kept the passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month. 20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together, all of them were pure, and killed the passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. 21 And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did eat, 22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
