1-6 Μετά απ’ αυτά τα γεγονότα, την εποχή που βασιλιάς στην Περσία ήταν ο Αρταξέρξης,*Αρταξέρξης. Δεν είναι βέβαιο αν εδώ πρόκειται για τον Αρταξέρξη Α΄ (464-424 π.Χ.) ή τον Αρταξέρξη Β΄ (404-359 π.Χ.) Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:5. ήρθε από τη Βαβυλώνα κάποιος Έσδρας, γιος του Σεραΐα, εγγονός του Αζαρία και δισέγγονος του Χελκία. Οι άλλοι του πρόγονοι (πριν από το Χελκία) με ανιούσα σειρά, ήταν οι Σαλλούμ, Σαδώκ, Αχιτώβ, Αμαρίας, Αζαρίας, Μεραϊώθ, Ζαραχίας, Ουζζί, Βουκκί, Αβισουά, Φινεές και Ελεάζαρ, γιος του αρχιερέα Ααρών.

Ο Έσδρας ήταν γραμματέας, δηλαδή έμπειρος γνώστης του Μωσαϊκού νόμου, που είχε δοθεί από τον Κύριο, το Θεό του Ισραήλ. Ο βασιλιάς τού έδωσε ό,τι του ζήτησε, γιατί ο Κύριος ο Θεός του ήταν μαζί του.*Φαίνεται πως ο Έσδρας κατείχε σπουδαίο αξίωμα στην αυλή του βασιλιά των Περσών. Παράλληλα ήταν αξιόλογος γνώστης των θρησκευτικών πραγμάτων και ένθερμος υποστηρικτής της ιουδαϊκής πίστεως.7 Το έβδομο έτος της βασιλείας του Αρταξέρξη ήρθαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και μερικοί Ισραηλίτες, ιερείς, λευίτες, ψάλτες, θυρωροί και υπηρέτες του ναού. 8 Τον πέμπτο μήνα του έβδομου έτους της βασιλείας του Αρταξέρξη, ήρθε και ο Έσδρας στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 9 Είχε αναχωρήσει από τη Βαβυλώνα την πρώτη μέρα του πρώτου μήνα κι έφτασε στην Ιερουσαλήμ την πρώτη μέρα του πέμπτου μήνα, χάρη στην ευεργετική παρουσία του Θεού, που ήταν μαζί του.

10 Ο Έσδρας είχε πράγματι αποφασίσει μ’ όλη του την καρδιά να ερευνήσει το νόμο του Κυρίου και να τον εφαρμόσει, κι επίσης να διδάξει τα προστάγματα και τις εντολές του στους Ισραηλίτες.

11 Ακολουθεί αντίγραφο εγγράφου, με το οποίο ο βασιλιάς Αρταξέρξης εφοδίασε τον ιερέα Έσδρα, τον έμπειρο γνώστη γύρω από τα ζητήματα των εντολών και των προσταγμάτων που ο Κύριος είχε δώσει στους Ισραηλίτες:

12 «Ο Αρταξέρξης,*Το πρωτότυπο των στ. 12-26 είναι στα αραμαϊκά. βασιλιάς των βασιλιάδων, προς τον Έσδρα, τον ιερέα, τον γνώστη του νόμου του Θεού του ουρανού· θερμό χαιρετισμό κ.λπ.

13 »Εκδίδω διαταγή να επιτραπεί να φύγουν μαζί σου από το βασίλειό μου όσοι Ισραηλίτες, λαϊκοί, ιερείς ή λευίτες, θέλουν να επιστρέψουν στην Ιερουσαλήμ.

14 »Εγώ, ο βασιλιάς, και οι εφτά σύμβουλοί μου, σε στέλνουμε στην Ιουδαία και στην Ιερουσαλήμ, για να δεις πώς εφαρμόζεται εκεί ο νόμος του Θεού σου, που το κείμενό του το έχεις στα χέρια σου· 15 και με την ευκαιρία αυτή, να μεταφέρεις το ασήμι και το χρυσάφι που εγώ και οι σύμβουλοί μου επιθυμούμε να προσφέρουμε στο Θεό του Ισραήλ, που έχει το θυσιαστήριό του στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 16 Επίσης θα μεταφέρεις στο ναό του Θεού σας, στην Ιερουσαλήμ, όλες τις εισφορές σε ασήμι και χρυσάφι που θα συγκεντρώσεις από ολόκληρη την επαρχία της Βαβυλώνας, μαζί με τις προαιρετικές εισφορές του λαού σου και των ιερέων. 17 Έπειτα, με τα χρήματα αυτά θα αγοράσεις αμέσως ταύρους, κριάρια, αρνιά, τις προσφορές των σιτηρών και τις σπονδές, και θα τα προσφέρεις στο θυσιαστήριο του ναού του Θεού σας, στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 18 Ό,τι περισσέψει από το ασήμι και το χρυσάφι, χρησιμοποιήστε το όπως νομίζετε καλύτερα εσύ και οι συμπατριώτες σου, αλλά πάντα ενεργώντας σύμφωνα με το θέλημα του Θεού σας. 19 Τα σκεύη που σας έχουν δοθεί για την υπηρεσία του ναού του Θεού, θα τα τοποθετήσετε ενώπιον του Θεού στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 20 Και καθετί που θα χρειαστεί να προμηθευτείτε για το ναό του Θεού σας, θα το πληρώνετε με χρήματα από το θησαυροφυλάκιο του βασιλιά.

21 »Εγώ, ο βασιλιάς Αρταξέρξης, δίνω διαταγή σ’ όλους τους θησαυροφύλακες της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη*της επαρχίας... Ευφράτη. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:10. να εκτελούν πρόθυμα ο,τιδήποτε τους ζητήσει ο ιερέας Έσδρας, ο έμπειρος γνώστης του νόμου του Θεού του ουρανού· 22 να του δίνουν ως και εκατό ασημένια τάλαντα, εκατό κορ σιτάρι, εκατό βαθ κρασί, εκατό βαθ λάδι και άφθονο αλάτι. 23 Καθετί που θα ζητήσει ο Θεός του ουρανού για το ναό του, να το προμηθεύουν με προθυμία, για να μην έρθει η οργή αυτού του Θεού στη χώρα του βασιλιά και των παιδιών του. 24 Επίσης γνωστοποιήθηκε στους θησαυροφύλακες ότι δεν επιτρέπεται να επιβάλλεται φόρος και δασμός στους ιερείς, στους λευίτες, στους ψάλτες, στους θυρωρούς, στους υπηρέτες του ναού, δηλαδή σε όλους εκείνους που απασχολούνται στο ναό του Θεού. 25 Εσύ λοιπόν, Έσδρα, σύμφωνα με τη σοφία του Θεού σου, που την κατέχεις, να διορίσεις αξιωματούχους και δικαστές, που θα διοικούν όλο το λαό της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη, δηλαδή όλους όσοι είναι γνώστες των νόμων του Θεού σου· κι επίσης θα τους διδάξεις σ’ εκείνους που δεν τους γνωρίζουν. 26 Όποιος δεν τηρεί το νόμο του Θεού σου ή το νόμο του βασιλιά, θα τιμωρείται αυστηρά είτε με θάνατο είτε με εξορία είτε με δήμευση της περιουσίας του είτε με φυλάκιση».

27 Ευλογημένος*Από το στ. 27 και μετά το πρωτότυπο είναι πάλι στα εβραϊκά. να είναι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των προγόνων μας, που έβαλε στην καρδιά του βασιλιά την επιθυμία, ν’ ανακαινίσει το ναό του Κυρίου, στην Ιερουσαλήμ! 28 Ο Θεός μού έδωσε τη χάρη του, ώστε ν’ αποκτήσω την εύνοια του βασιλιά και των συμβούλων του και όλων των ισχυρών αρχόντων του βασιλείου του. Έτσι ενισχυμένος από την προστασία του Κυρίου, του Θεού μου, μπόρεσα να συγκεντρώσω τους αρχηγούς του Ισραήλ, για να φύγουν μαζί μου.

1 Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, 2 The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, 3 The son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, 4 The son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5 The son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest: 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him. 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king. 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.*7.9 began…: Heb. was the foundation of the going up 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

11 Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of his statutes to Israel. 12 Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time.*7.12 unto…: or, to Ezra the priest, a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven, peace, etc 13 I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee. 14 Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;*7.14 of the king: Chaldee, from before the king 15 And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem, 16 And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem: 17 That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. 18 And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God. 19 The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem. 20 And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king’s treasure house. 21 And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily, 22 Unto an hundred talents of silver, and to an hundred measures of wheat, and to an hundred baths of wine, and to an hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.*7.22 measures: Chaldee, cors 23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?*7.23 Whatsoever…: Chaldee, Whatsoever is of the decree 24 Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them. 25 And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. 26 And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.*7.26 to banishment: Chaldee, to rooting out

27 Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem: 28 And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
