1 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος δίνει σ’ εσάς τους ιερείς την ακόλουθη προειδοποίηση: 2 «Αν δεν υπακούσετε και δεν αποφασίσετε να με τιμήσετε, θα στείλω εναντίον σας συμφορά και θα ανακαλέσω τα προνόμιά σας.*θα στείλω... προνόμιά σας. Κατά λ. «θα μετατρέψω την ευλογία σας σε κατάρα» (βλ. Αρ 18:8-32). Και πράγματι το ’κανα, αλλά εσείς δεν συμμορφωθήκατε. 3 Το ίδιο είμαι έτοιμος να κάνω και στους απογόνους σας. Κι όσο για σας, θα πετάξω στο πρόσωπό σας την κοπριά των ζώων που θυσιάζετε στις γιορτές σας· και θα σας ρίξουν κι εσάς στον κοπρώνα.

4 »Έτσι θα καταλάβετε ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, σας είχα προειδοποιήσει, για να διατηρήσω τη διαθήκη μου με το Λευί και τους απογόνους του. 5 Μ’ εκείνη τη διαθήκη μου υποσχόμουν να τους δώσω ζωή και ευτυχία, και τους τα έδωσα· κι εκείνοι είχαν υποσχεθεί να με σέβονται και να ταπεινώνονται ενώπιόν μου, και μέχρι τώρα το έκαναν. 6 Διαβίβαζαν στους ανθρώπους τις εντολές μου ανόθευτες και δεν τους παραπλανούσαν. Με υπηρετούσαν με πιστότητα και ειλικρίνεια, και έτσι εμπόδιζαν πολλούς να κάνουν το κακό. 7 Πράγματι, το καθήκον των ιερέων είναι να διακηρύττουν το νόμο και να δίνουν συμβουλές σε όσους τις ζητούν. Γιατί αυτοί είναι οι αγγελιοφόροι του Κυρίου του σύμπαντος».

8 «Εσείς όμως προδώσατε την αποστολή σας. Με τη συμβουλή σας οδηγήσατε πολλούς ανθρώπους να κάνουν το κακό. Έτσι παραβιάσατε τη διαθήκη μου με το Λευί. Γι’ αυτό εγώ ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέω: 9 Επειδή δεν με υπακούσατε και συμπεριφερθήκατε με προσωποληψία όταν δίνατε τις συμβουλές σας, εγώ τώρα θα κάνω να σας περιφρονήσουν όλοι οι άνθρωποι».

10 Δεν έχουμε όλοι μας έναν πατέρα; Δε μας δημιούργησε ένας Θεός; Γιατί απιστεί ο ένας στον άλλο παραβιάζοντας τη διαθήκη του Θεού με τους προγόνους μας;

11 Ο λαός του Ιούδα αθέτησαν την υπόσχεσή τους στο Θεό και έκαναν βδελυρές πράξεις στην Ιερουσαλήμ και σ’ όλη τη χώρα του Ισραήλ. Βεβήλωσαν ό,τι ανήκει στον Κύριο*ό,τι ανήκει στον Κύριο. Κατά λ. «το άγιο του Κυρίου», το οποίο στα εβρ. μπορεί να αναφέρεται είτε στο ναό είτε στο λαό του Κυρίου. και ό,τι αγαπάει ο Κύριος. Οι άντρες έχουν πάρει γυναίκες που λατρεύουν ξένους θεούς. 12 Μακάρι ο Κύριος ν’ απομακρύνει από την κοινότητα των απογόνων του Ιακώβ όλους ανεξαίρετα που τα πράττουν αυτά, ακόμη κι αν προσφέρουν θυσία στον Κύριο του σύμπαντος.

13 Πλημμυρίσατε με δάκρυα το θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου· κλαίτε κι αναστενάζετε γιατί αρνείται πια να προσέξει τη θυσία που του προσφέρετε και να τη δεχτεί με ευχαρίστηση. 14 Και ρωτάτε: «Γιατί;» Επειδή ο Κύριος ήταν μάρτυρας ανάμεσα σ’ εσένα και στη γυναίκα σου που παντρεύτηκες στα νιάτα σου, αλλά της φέρθηκες με απιστία, παρά το γεγονός ότι ήταν η σύζυγός σου και η γυναίκα με την οποία είχες κάνει συνθήκη μαζί της. 15 Ο Θεός δεν δημιούργησε ενότητα, έναν ζωντανό οργανισμό; Γιατί έκανε αυτήν την ενότητα; Για να αποκτηθούν απόγονοι ευλογημένοι από το Θεό. Γι’ αυτό προσέχετε να μη χωρίζετε τη γυναίκα που παντρευτήκατε στα νιάτα σας. 16 «Απεχθάνομαι το διαζύγιο», λέει ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος. «Είναι σαν να βιαιοπραγείτε. Γι’ αυτό, προσέχετε να μην είστε άπιστοι στη γυναίκα σας».

17 Τον κουράσατε τον Κύριο με τα ανόητα λόγια σας. «Πώς τον κουράσαμε;» ρωτάτε. Με το να λέτε: «Αυτοί που κάνουν το κακό είναι αρεστοί στον Κύριο, κι εκείνος τους αγαπάει» ή «πού είναι ο Θεός που φροντίζει για το δίκαιο;»

10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.*2.11 loved: or, ought to love 12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.*2.12 the master…: or, him that waketh, and him that answereth 13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.

14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. 17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
