1 Τότε μίλησε ο Ελιφάζ, ο Ταιμανίτης.

2 Μπορεί τάχα ο άνθρωπος

χρήσιμος να ’ναι στο Θεό;

Μονάχα τον εαυτό του μπορεί να ωφελήσει,

αν έχει φρόνηση.

3 Τι έχει να ωφεληθεί ο Παντοδύναμος,

αν είσαι δίκαιος εσύ;

Κι αν έχεις άψογη ζωή εκείνος τι κερδίζει;

4 Μήπως θαρρείς πως επειδή είσαι ευσεβής

γι’ αυτό σε τιμωρεί

και σε δικάζει;

5 Όχι γι’ αυτό, αλλά επειδή μεγάλη είν’ η κακία σου

κι οι ανομίες οι δικές σου

δε μετριούνται.

6 Πήρες παράνομο ενέχυρο απ’ το φτωχό συμπατριώτη σου

και το μοναδικό

του στέρησες το ρούχο.

7 Δεν πότισες νερό τον διψασμένο

κι αρνήθηκες στον πεινασμένο το ψωμί.

8 Επειδή είσαι ισχυρός κυρίεψες όλη τη χώρα.

κι είχες το θράσος

να εγκατασταθείς σ’ αυτήν.

9 Αρνήθηκες τις χήρες να βοηθήσεις

κι εκμεταλλεύτηκες

τα απροστάτευτα ορφανά.

10 Γι’ αυτό και σε κυκλώνουνε παγίδες

και σε ταράζει φόβος ξαφνικός.

11 Τόσο πολύ σκοτείνιασε γύρω σου που δε βλέπεις·

και σε σκεπάζουνε πλημμύρα τα νερά.

12 Δε βρίσκεται τάχα ο Θεός πάνω ψηλά στους ουρανούς;

Και δες σε πόσο ύψος είναι τ’ άστρα!

13 Για τούτο κι εσύ λες:

«Τάχα τι ξέρει ο Θεός;

μπορεί μέσ’ απ’ τα σκοτεινά σύννεφα

να μας κρίνει;»

14 Λες πως τα νέφη τα πυκνά δεν τον αφήνουνε να δει,

καθώς τις άκρες τ’ ουρανού

τις γυροφέρνει;

15 Θέλεις τους δρόμους τους παλιούς ν’ ακολουθήσεις,

που βάδισαν οι άνομοι;

16 Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι χάθηκαν πριν την ώρα τους

και τα θεμέλια τους

ο χείμαρρος τα πήρε.

17 Λέγανε στο Θεό: «Φύγε μακριά μας!»

και «τι μπορεί να κάνει

για μας ο Παντοδύναμος;»

18 Κι όμως, αυτός γέμιζε μ’ αγαθά τα σπίτια τους.

Αλλά μακριά επίσης κι από μένα

τέτοιου είδους λογισμοί.*Εδώ ο Ελιφάζ επαναλαμβάνει τα λόγια του Ιώβ εις κεφ. 21:16.

19 Οι δίκαιοι βλέπουνε την πτώση των κακών

και χαίρονται.

Τους ειρωνεύονται οι αθώοι:

20 «Να που χαθήκαν όσα απόκτησαν οι εχθροί μας

κι ό,τι απόμεινε απ’ αυτούς

το ’φαγε η φωτιά».

21 Λοιπόν σταμάτα σαν εχθρό να βλέπεις το Θεό!

Κάνε μαζί του ειρήνη κι έτσι την ευτυχία θα βρεις.

22 Δέξου τη διδαχή απ’ το στόμα του

και θρόνιασε τα λόγια του

μες στην καρδιά σου.

23 Γύρισε πίσω στον Παντοδύναμο

και θα σε ανορθώσει.

Διώξε μακριά την αδικία

από το σπίτι σου,

24 πέταξε το χρυσάφι σου στο χώμα

και ρίξε στα χαλίκια των χειμάρρων το μάλαμα της Οφείρ.

25 Και θα ’ναι ο Παντοδύναμος χρυσάφι σου

κι ασήμι σου σωρός.

26 Τότε στον Παντοδύναμο θα βρίσκεις αγαλλίαση

και θα κοιτάς μ’ εμπιστοσύνη το Θεό.

27 Θα τον παρακαλείς κι αυτός θα σε ακούει·

κι εσύ θα εκπληρώνεις

ό,τι του έταξες.

28 Ό,τι αποφασίζεις θα το πετυχαίνεις

και φως θα καταυγάζει

τα μονοπάτια σου.

29 Σ’ αυτούς που ’χουν καταβληθεί

θα μπορείς να τους λες να σηκωθούνε,

γιατί τον συντριμμένο

τον σώζει ο Θεός.

30 Θα ελευθερώσει ακόμα και τον ένοχο·

για χάρη σου, αν η ζωή σου είν’ καθαρή,

θα τον λυτρώσει.*Ο στ. στα εβρ. είναι ασαφής.

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?*22.2 as he…: or, if he may be profitable, doth his good success depend thereon? 3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect? 4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
