1 Τότε είπε ο Βιλδάδ ο Σουχίτης:

2 Ως πότε έτσι θα μιλάς

και θα ’ναι τα λεγόμενά σου

δίχως νόημα;

3 Μήπως το δίκιο το αντιστρέφει ο Θεός;

Μήπως στρεβλώνει ο Παντοδύναμος τη δικαιοσύνη;

4 Αν τα παιδιά σου αμάρτησαν ενώπιόν του,

τους έκανε να υποστούνε τις συνέπειες.

5 Αλλά αν εσύ προσφύγεις στο Θεό

και δεηθείς στον Παντοδύναμο,

6 αν είσαι καθαρός και τίμιος,

σίγουρα τότε θα νοιαστεί για σένα

και θ’ αποκαταστήσει αντάξια το σπίτι σου.

7 Η αρχική σου ευημερία

θα σου φανεί πολύ μικρή

μπρος στην πολύ μεγάλη που σου μέλλεται.

8 Ρώτησε τις προηγούμενες γενιές

και πρόσεξε την πείρα των προγόνων τους.

9 Εμείς είμαστε χτεσινοί

και τίποτα δεν ξέρουμε·

πάνω στη γη σαν τη σκιά περνά η ζωή μας.

10 Αυτοί όμως θα σε διδάξουν και θα σου μιλήσουν·

από την πείρα τους θ’ αντλήσουνε τα λόγια τους.

11 Μπορεί έξω απ’ τους βάλτους

να βλαστήσει ο πάπυρος;

Μπορεί χωρίς νερό

να μεγαλώσει το καλάμι;

12 Ενώ είν’ ακόμα πάνω στον ανθό του

και πριν να ’ρθεί ο καιρός του να το κόψουνε,

χωρίς νερό ξεραίνεται

πριν από κάθε άλλο χορτάρι.

13 Έτσι συμβαίνει και σ’ εκείνους όλους

που το Θεό ξεχνούν·

και χάνεται του ασεβή η ελπίδα.

14 Η σιγουριά του είναι μια λεπτή κλωστή,

είν’ η ελπίδα του ιστός αράχνης.

15 Αν στηριχτεί ο ασεβής στο νήμα της αράχνης

να τον κρατήσει δεν μπορεί·

κι αν γαντζωθεί απάνω του

εκείνο δεν θ’ αντέξει.

16 Να τον, ο ασεβής, στον ήλιο αντίκρυ, όλο χυμούς,

μέσα στον κήπο απλώνει τα κλαδιά του.

17 Τυλίγονται στις πέτρες πάνω οι ρίζες του

και βρίσκει στήριγμα ανάμεσα στους βράχους.

18 Μ’ αν τον απομακρύνουν απ’ τον τόπο του,

κανείς δε θα μπορεί να πει

πού ήταν φυτεμένος.

19 Τέτοια είν’ η μοίρα καθώς βλέπεις, του ασεβή·

κι εκεί στη θέση του άλλοι θα βλαστήσουν.

20 Μα δε θ’ αφήσει ο Θεός

ποτέ τον ευσεβή,

ενώ βοήθεια στους κακούς

δεν πρόκειται να δώσει.

21 Θα φέρει ο Θεός ξανά

το γέλιο, Ιώβ, στα χείλη σου!

Το στόμα σου θα το γεμίσει

κραυγές χαράς.

22 Αυτοί όμως που σε μισούν θα καταντροπιαστούνε·

κι η κατοικία των ασεβών

αύριο θα χαθεί.

1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, 2 How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind? 3 Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice? 4 If thy children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;*8.4 for…: Heb. in the hand of their transgression 5 If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; 6 If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous. 7 Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.

8 For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers: 9 (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:)*8.9 nothing: Heb. not 10 Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart? 11 Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water? 12 Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb. 13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish: 14 Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider’s web.*8.14 web: Heb. house 15 He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. 16 He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden. 17 His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones. 18 If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee. 19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
