1 Τότε οι τρεις εκείνοι άντρες έπαψαν ν’ απαντούν στον Ιώβ, επειδή θεωρούσε τον εαυτό του δίκαιο. 2 Θύμωσε όμως ο Ελιού, γιος του Βαραχιήλ κι απόγονος του Βουζ, από την οικογένεια του Ραμ, γιατί ο Ιώβ είχε φτάσει να θεωρεί τον εαυτό του πιο δίκαιον κι από το Θεό. 3 Αλλά θύμωσε και με τους τρεις φίλους του Ιώβ, γιατί δεν έβρισκαν τι να του απαντήσουν, για να του αποδείξουν την ενοχή του. 4 Μιας κι εκείνοι ήταν μεγαλύτεροί του, λοιπόν, ο Ελιού περίμενε να τελειώσουν για να μιλήσει στον Ιώβ.

5,6 Όταν όμως είδε πως εκείνοι δεν είχαν καμιά απάντηση, τότε ξέσπασε θυμωμένος και είπε:

Εγώ είμ’ ακόμα νέος κι εσείς γέροντες·

γι’ αυτό φοβόμουνα και δίσταζα

αυτά που σκέφτομαι να σας τα πω.

7 Έλεγα μέσα μου πως θα μιλούσε η ηλικία

και πως σοφία θα δίδασκαν

τα χρόνια τα πολλά.

8 Μα ό,τι κάνει συνετό τον άνθρωπο

είναι το πνεύμα,

είν’ η πνοή που εμφύσησε ο Παντοδύναμος.

9 Οι ηλικιωμένοι δεν είναι πάντα και σοφοί,

ούτε κι οι γέροντες ξέρουνε πάντα

το σωστό ποιο είναι.

10 Γι’ αυτό και τώρα σας γυρεύω να μ’ ακούσετε·

θέλω κι εγώ τη γνώμη μου να σας εκθέσω.

11 Περίμενα να ολοκληρώσετε τους λόγους σας,

παρακολούθησα τα επιχειρήματά σας,

όσο εσείς αναζητούσατε φράσεις σοφές.

12 Σας έδωσα όλη την προσοχή μου,

αλλά κανείς σας τον Ιώβ δεν έπεισε

ούτε τα λόγια του αντέκρουσε κανένας.

13 Και μη θαρρείτε προπαντός πως τη σοφή βρήκατε λύση,

λέγοντας πως δεν είν’ ο άνθρωπος,

μα ο Θεός που θα τον μεταπείσει.

14 Τα λόγια του Ιώβ δεν στόχευαν εμένα·

κι εγώ δεν θα του απαντήσω με τα λόγια σας.

15 Αυτοί ξαφνιάστηκαν, σκεφτόμουν,

και πια δεν αποκρίνονται·

τα λόγια τους τα χάσαν.

16 Να περιμένω όσο εκείνοι δε μιλούν;

Στέκονται εκεί, χωρίς πια ν’ απαντούνε.

17 Με τη σειρά μου κι εγώ θέλω ν’ απαντήσω,

θέλω κι εγώ τη γνώμη μου να πω.

18 Λόγια έχω μέσα μου πολλά.

Το Πνεύμα εντός μου, του Θεού,

με βιάζει να μιλήσω.

19 Μέσα μου γίνεται αναβρασμός,

καθώς του μούστου η ζύμωση μες στο ασκί,

που είν’ έτοιμο να σκάσει.

20 Θα πρέπει να μιλήσω για ν’ ανασάνω ελεύθερα,

το στόμα μου ν’ ανοίξω ν’ αποκριθώ.

21 Δε θα πάρω το μέρος κανενός

κι ούτε κανέναν πρόκειται να κολακέψω.

22 Γιατί δεν ξέρω εγώ να κολακεύω·

αν κάτι τέτοιο έκανα,

ο Πλάστης μου αμέσως θα με τιμωρούσε.
