1 Τα ορυχεία είναι γνωστά όπου το ασήμι βγαίνει,

τα μέρη όπου το χρυσάφι καθαρίζεται.*Στο εβρ. δεν είναι σαφές ποιος μιλάει εδώ.

2 Βγάζει ο άνθρωπος τον σίδηρο απ’ το χώμα

και λιώνει από την πέτρα το χαλκό.

3 Στις σκοτεινές στοές των ορυχείων φέρνει φως

κι αναζητάει μέσα στης γης τα έγκατα το πέτρωμα,

στην αφεγγιά και στο βαθύ σκοτάδι.

4 Ανοίγει σήραγγες από τον κόσμο μακριά,

σ’ άγνωστα για τους ταξιδιώτες μέρη

και με σκοινιά κρέμεται στο κενό.

5 Η γη απ’ όπου βγαίνει το ψωμί

ανασκαλεύεται μέσα στα βάθη της,

λες και την πέρασε φωτιά.

6 Ζαφείρια έχουν οι πέτρες της

και σκόνη από χρυσάφι.

7 Τα μονοπάτια της αυτά δεν τα γνωρίζουνε τ’ αρπαχτικά πουλιά·

και μάτι γερακιού δεν τα ’δε.

8 Περήφανα θηρία δεν τα πάτησαν,

δεν τα περπάτησε λιοντάρι.

9 Μονάχα ο άνθρωπος χτυπάει το γρανιτένιο βράχο

κι αναποδογυρίζει

απ’ τα συθέμελά τους τα βουνά.

10 Στοές ανοίγει μες στους βράχους

κι ανακαλύπτει κάθε τι πολύτιμο το μάτι του.

11 Φράζει τις διαρροές στα υπόγεια ρεύματα

και ό,τι κρύβεται εκεί

στο φως το φέρνει.

12 Μα, τη σοφία πού μπορεί κανένας να τη βρει;

και πού να βρίσκεται η πηγή της φρόνησης;

13 Ο άνθρωπος δεν ξέρει την αξία της·

δε βρίσκεται στων ζωντανών τη χώρα.

14 Λέει ο απύθμενος ωκεανός:

«Δεν την έχω εγώ».

Κι η θάλασσα κι εκείνη λέει:

«Δε βρίσκεται σ’ εμένα».

15 Δε γίνεται ν’ αγοραστεί

με καθαρό χρυσάφι

ούτε και με καντάρια ασήμι να αποκτηθεί.

16 Δεν μπορεί σε αξία να συγκριθεί

με το χρυσάφι της Οφείρ,

ούτε με τον πολύτιμο τον όνυχα και το ζαφείρι.

17 Ούτε χρυσάφι ούτε γυαλί*ούτε γυαλί. Εκείνη την εποχή το γυαλί, ως σπάνιο είδος, είχε μεγάλη αξία.

μπορεί σε αξία να τη φτάσει·

με χρυσαφένιο τάσι

δεν μπορεί ν’ ανταλλαχθεί.

18 Κοράλλια, αν πεις, και κρύσταλλα

δε λογαριάζονται.

Πιότερο αξίζει η σοφία, παρά πολύτιμα μαργαριτάρια.

19 Δε φτάνει την αξία της το αιθιοπικό τοπάζι

και με το καθαρό χρυσάφι δε συγκρίνεται.

20 Λοιπόν, από πού έρχεται η σοφία;

πού βρίσκεται η φρόνηση;

21 Κρύβεται απ’ τα βλέμματα όλων των ζωντανών,

ακόμα κι από τ’ ουρανού τα πετεινά ξεφεύγει.

22 Ο θάνατος κι ο άδης λένε:

«Μονάχα η φήμη της στ’ αυτιά μας

έχει φτάσει».

23 Μόνο ο Θεός το δρόμο της γνωρίζει

και ξέρει αυτός πού η σοφία βρίσκεται.

24 Γιατί εκείνος βλέπει ως και τα πέρατα της γης

κι όλα κάτω απ’ τον ουρανό

τα διακρίνει.

25 Όταν έδινε αυτός στον άνεμο το βάρος του

και των νερών καθόριζε τον όγκο,

26 όταν τους νόμους όριζε για τη βροχή

και για τον κεραυνό χάραζε δρόμο,

27 τότε είδε τη σοφία και την αξιολόγησε,

την αναγνώρισε για θησαυρό

και να μείνει τη δέχτηκε μαζί του.

28 Κατόπιν ο Θεός είπε στον άνθρωπο:

«Ο σεβασμός στον Κύριο

αυτό είν’ η σοφία

και του κακού η αποφυγή

είναι η φρόνηση».

14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. 15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.*28.15 It…: Heb. 20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? 21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.*28.21 air: or, heaven 22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears. 23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. 24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; 25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. 26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: 27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.*28.27 declare…: or, number it 28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
