1 Όποιος νομίζει πως μπορεί να τον νικήσει τον κροκόδειλο,

τον εαυτό του απατά·

αρκεί μονάχα η όψη του

ξερό στη γη για να σε ρίξει.

2 Ποιος θά ’ταν τόσο ριψοκίνδυνος

για να τολμήσει να τον προκαλέσει;

Και ποιος ακόμα τολμηρότερος

σ’ εμένα για ν’ αντισταθεί;

3 Ποιος προηγήθηκε στα δώρα του

ώστε να στείλω να τ’ ανταποδώσω;

Δικά μου είν’ όσα υπάρχουνε κάτω απ’ τον ουρανό.

4 Θα πω ακόμα για τα μέλη του κροκόδειλου,

το σφρίγος του

και την αρμονική κατασκευή του:

5 Ποιος να τολμήσει από εμπρός ν’ ανοίξει το χιτώνα του

και στο διπλό του θώρακα*στο διπλό του θώρακα, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «στη διπλή σειρά δοντιών του».

ποιος να εισχωρήσει;

6 Ποιος θα τολμήσει να του ανοίξει

του στόματός του τη μεγάλη πύλη,

που τη φρουρούν τα φοβερά τα δόντια του;

7 Είναι η ράχη του όλη καμωμένη

από ασπίδες στερεές,

σφιχτά συγκολλημένες, αδιαπέραστες.

8 Η καθεμιά προσαρμοσμένη με την άλλη

έτσι που μήτε αέρας να μπορεί

ανάμεσά τους να περάσει.

9 Η μια ενωμένη με την άλλη τόσο σφιχτά

που τίποτα να μην μπορεί να τις χωρίσει.

10 Στο φτέρνισμα του κροκοδείλου λαμπυρίζουν τα νερά στο φως,

σαν την αυγή διάπυρα είν’ τα μάτια του.

11 Φλόγινες γλώσσες ξεπηδούν από το στόμα του

κι εκσφενδονίζονται δεμάτια σπίθες.

12 Αχνός απ’ τα ρουθούνια του σκορπιέται

σαν από χύτρα που κοχλάζει

ή από λέβητα.

13 Τόσο είν’ η ανάσα του καυτή που ανάβει κάρβουνα·

από το στόμα του πηδάνε φλόγες.

14 Στον τράχηλό του έχει τόση δύναμη ο κροκόδειλος,

ώστε καθένας που τον συναντά,

τρομάζει.

15 Τα τμήματα της σάρκας του είναι συγκολλημένα μεταξύ τους,

στερεωμένα πάνω του κι ανυποχώρητα.

16 Είναι σκληρή η καρδιά του σαν την πέτρα

και σταθερή καθώς η κάτω ακίνητη μυλόπετρα.

17 Όταν ορθώνεται ο κροκόδειλος,

τρέμουν ακόμα κι οι πιο δυνατοί,

και πανικόβλητοι υποχωρούνε.

18 Ξίφος κι αν τον χτυπήσει, εκείνος δεν πληγώνεται

ούτε από δόρυ, ακόντιο ή βέλος.

19 Το σίδερο είναι γι’ αυτόν σαν το άχυρο,

κι είν’ ο χαλκός σαν ξύλο σάπιο.

20 Δε θα μπορέσουνε του τόξου οι ριπές

σε φυγή τον κροκόδειλο να τρέψουν·

οι πέτρες της σφεντόνας είναι γι’ αυτόν σαν του σταριού το άχυρο.

21 Κομμάτι σταχοκάλαμο είναι γι’ αυτόν το ρόπαλο·

γελάει όταν τα δόρατα

στ’ αυτιά του πλάι σφυρίζουν.

22 Έχει εξογκώματα από κάτω στην κοιλιά του

σαν πέτρες κοφτερές·

περνάει κι αφήνει αυλακιές

στη λάσπη σαν τον βολοκόπο.

23 Το βυθό κάνει να κοχλάζει σαν καζάνι, ο κροκόδειλος,

τη θάλασσα να μοιάζει χύτρα

όπου ετοιμάζονται αλοιφές.

24 Πίσω του αφήνει λαμπερό ένα χνάρι

κι αποκτά κόμη λευκασμένη ο απύθμενος ωκεανός.

25 Πάνω στη γη δε βρίσκεται τίποτα

όμοιό του,

πλάστηκε να ’ναι ατρόμητος.

26 Κοιτάει με συγκατάβαση τα ζώα τα πιο αγέρωχα·

εκείνος είν’ ο βασιλιάς
