1 Κι ο Ελιού συνέχισε:

2 Τα λόγια μου ακούστε τα, σοφοί,

δώστε μου προσοχή

εσείς που ’χετε γνώση.

3 Γιατί το αυτί τα λόγια τα διακρίνει,

καθώς γεύεται ο ουρανίσκος την τροφή.

4 Το δίκιο ας ερευνήσουμε,

μαζί ας αναγνωρίσουμε

ποιο το καλό.

5 Από τη μια ο Ιώβ, πως είναι δίκαιος ισχυρίζεται,

και πως του αρνήθηκε το δίκιο του ο Θεός·

6 πως έβγαλε σε βάρος του απόφαση άδικη

και πως το βέλος του τον πλήγωσε θανατερά,

ενώ αυτός δεν είχε αμαρτήσει.

7 Από την άλλη λέτε εσείς:

«Υπάρχει άραγε άνθρωπος άλλος σαν τον Ιώβ,

που το Θεό να βλασφημεί

λες και νεράκι πίνει;

8 Με τους κακούς εξομοιώνεται

και συμπορεύεται

με τους αμαρτωλούς.

9 Λέει πως στον άνθρωπο είν’ ανώφελο

να θέλει το Θεό να ευχαριστήσει».

10 Για τούτο ακούστε με εσείς,

άνθρωποι συνετοί.

Αδύνατο ο Θεός κακό να κάνει

και ν’ αδικήσει ο Παντοδύναμος.

11 Αυτός πληρώνει τον καθένα

σύμφωνα με τα έργα του

και στον καθένα δίνει ανάλογα με τη διαγωγή του.

12 Είναι αλήθεια πως ο Θεός

δεν κάνει το κακό

και πως ο Παντοδύναμος το δίκιο δεν το διαστρέφει.

13 Μην τάχα κάποιος άλλος του εμπιστεύτηκε τη γη;

μην κάποιος άλλος του ’δωσε

το σύμπαν να φροντίζει;

14 Αν ο Θεός σκεφτόταν μόνο τον εαυτό του

κι έπαιρνε πίσω τη ζωηφόρα του πνοή,

15 τότε ο κάθε ζωντανός οργανισμός θα πέθαινε

και θα γινόταν ο άνθρωπος και πάλι χώμα.

16 Ιώβ, αν έχεις φρόνηση, άκου αυτό·

στα λόγια μου δώσε την προσοχή σου.

17 Κατηγορείς εσύ το Θεό,

τον δίκαιο και το μεγάλο;

νομίζεις πως το δίκιο το εχθρεύεται;

Πώς τότε θα ’ταν δυνατό να κυβερνάει τον κόσμο;

18 Μονάχα αυτός μπορεί να πει στο βασιλιά:

«Είσαι ανάξιος!»

στους άρχοντες: «Είστε ασεβείς!»

19 Μονάχα αυτός δεν παίρνει το μέρος των αρχόντων,

τον πλούσιο δεν τον προτιμάει απ’ τον φτωχό,

γιατ’ είναι όλοι έργα των χεριών του.

20 Πεθαίνουν μες στη νύχτα ξαφνικά·

ο λαός ανταριάζεται

κι οι άρχοντες καταρρέουν.

Χωρίς ανθρώπου χέρι να υψωθεί,

οι τύραννοι χαθήκαν.

21 Γιατί τα μάτια του Θεού βλέπουν

το πώς βιώνει ο άνθρωπος·

και πώς πορεύεται προσέχουν.

22 Σκοτάδι δεν υπάρχει τόσο ζοφερό,

που τους κακούς απ’ το Θεό να κρύψει.

23 Δεν έχει ανάγκη ο Θεός πολύ να ερευνήσει,

για να καλέσει κάποιον μπροστά του να κριθεί.

24 Χωρίς ν’ αρχίσει ανάκριση,

τους ισχυρούς συντρίβει,

κι άλλους βάζει στη θέση τους.

25 Αυτός ξέρει τα έργα τους·

τους ανατρέπει σε μια νύχτα

και συντρίβονται.

26 Καθώς εγκληματίες,

δημόσια τους μαστιγώνει,

27 γιατί απ’ αυτόν απομακρύνθηκαν

κι όλες αγνόησαν τις εντολές του.

28 Έτσι αναγκάσαν τους φτωχούς

και τους αδύνατους,

κραυγές βοήθειας στο Θεό να υψώσουν,

κι εκείνος τη φωνή τους άκουσε.

29 Αντίθετα, αν ο Θεός δεν θέλει ν’ αντιδράσει,

ποιος θα του δώσει άδικο;

Αν θέλει να κρυφτεί, ποιος θα τον δει;

Τι θα μπορούσαν οι λαοί να κάνουν, κι η οικουμένη,

30 αν ήθελε ο Θεός έναν δημαγωγό ασυνείδητο

να τον ορίσει βασιλιά τους;

31 Ίσως πει κάποιος στο Θεό:

«Έπαθα για τα λάθη μου, δε θα ξαναμαρτήσω πια·

32 τα σφάλματα που εγώ δε βλέπω δείξε μου·

έπραξα ίσως το κακό, δε θα το επαναλάβω».

33 Αυτόν θα πρέπει τάχα να τον τιμωρήσει ο Θεός,

σύμφωνα με τη γνώμη σου,

επειδή έτσι εσύ το κρίνεις;

Αφού εσύ αποφασίζεις κι όχι εγώ,

ό,τι νομίζεις πες το!

34 Οι μυαλωμένοι άνθρωποι μαζί μου θα ’ναι σύμφωνοι·

θα πουν, όπως κι οι συνετοί, που με ακούνε:

35 «Μίλησε αστόχαστα ο Ιώβ,

και νόημα τα λόγια του δεν έχουν.

36 Όσα μας λέει ο Ιώβ να εξεταστούνε πρέπει

σε όλο τους το βάθος,

γιατί αποκρίνεται καθώς οι ασεβείς.

37 Προσθέτει έτσι ασέβεια πάνω στην αμαρτία του·

ανάμεσά μας την αμφιβολία σπέρνει

και λέει πολλά ενάντια στο Θεό».

10 Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.*34.10 men…: Heb. men of heart 11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. 12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment. 13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?*34.13 the whole: Heb. all of it? 14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;*34.14 man: Heb. him 15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.

16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words. 17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?*34.17 govern: Heb. bind? 18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? 19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. 20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.*34.20 the mighty…: Heb. they shall take away the mighty 21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. 22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. 23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.*34.23 enter: Heb. go 24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.*34.24 number: Heb. searching out 25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.*34.25 destroyed: Heb. crushed 26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;*34.26 open…: Heb. place of beholders 27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:*34.27 him: Heb. after him 28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted. 29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: 30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: 32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. 33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.*34.33 according…: Heb. from with thee? 34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.*34.34 of…: Heb. of heart 35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom. 36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.*34.36 My…: or, My father, let Job be tried 37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
