1 Τότε μίλησε ο Σωφάρ, ο Νααμαθίτης.

2 Θύελλα μέσα στη καρδιά μου έχει ξεσπάσει.

Μέσα μου βράζει, άλλο δεν μπορώ να κρατηθώ.

3 Ο έλεγχός σου που άκουσα με πρόσβαλε·

αλλά το συνετό μου πνεύμα

την απάντηση μου υπαγορεύει τη σωστή.

4 Καλά το ξέρεις πως από παλιά,

απ’ όταν έβαλε ο Θεός πάνω στη γη τον άνθρωπο,

5 ο θρίαμβος των κακών πολύ δεν διαρκεί·

κι είναι του ασεβή η χαρά

για μια στιγμή μονάχα.

6 Κι αν είν’ ακόμα ικανός

ως τα ουράνια να υψωθεί

και το κεφάλι του τα σύννεφα ν’ αγγίξει,

7 πρέπει να κατεβεί στο λάκο,

σαν τις ακαθαρσίες του

κι οριστικά ν’ αφανιστεί.

Κι όσοι τον ήξεραν θ’ αναρωτιούνται

πού να είναι.

8 Θα σβήσει καθώς τ’ όνειρο ο ασεβής

και πια δε θα τον βρίσκουν·

σαν νυχτερινή οπτασία θα χαθεί.

9 Τα μάτια που τον έβλεπαν

δε θα τον ξαναδούνε,

και θα τον χάσει ο τόπος όπου έμενε.

10 Θ’ αναγκαστούν να ζητιανεύουν τα παιδιά του,

γιατί θα πρέπει να επιστρέψει αυτός τον πλούτο,

που μ’ αδικίες απέκτησε.

11 Ήταν το σώμα του γεμάτο σφρίγος νεανικό,

μα τώρα κείνη η ικμάδα

μαζί του μες στο χώμα κείτεται.

12 Είν’ η κακία στο στόμα του γλυκιά, του ασεβή,

κάτω απ’ τη γλώσσα την κρατά

13 και την αφήνει εκεί αργά να λιώνει,

ώστε η απόλαυση πολύ να διαρκεί.

14 Μα γίνεται πικρή μες στο στομάχι του,

μέσα του αλλάζει σε φαρμάκι οχιάς.

15 Τα πλούτη τα κλεμμένα που κατάπιε θα τα βγάλει·

θα του τα πάρει πίσω με τη βία ο Θεός

ως και το τελευταίο υπόλοιπο.

16 Ό,τι ρουφούσε ήτανε του αστρίτη το φαρμάκι,

θανατηφόρο σαν το δάγκωμα οχιάς.

17 Δεν θα ζήσει να δει της χώρας του τα πλούτη,

το μέλι και το βούτυρο

που θα κυλούν ποτάμι.

18 Δε θ’ απολαύσει ο ασεβής όσα με κόπο κέρδισε

και τ’ αγαθά απ’ τις συναλλαγές του δε θα τα γευτεί·

19 επειδή καταπίεζε τους φτωχούς

και δε νοιαζότανε γι’ αυτούς.

Άρπαζε σπίτια, αντί να τους τα χτίζει.

20 Η απληστία του ασεβή δεν έχει όρια,

κι ωστόσο με τους θησαυρούς του

δε νιώθει ασφαλής.

21 Απ’ την αδηφαγία του τίποτα δε γλιτώνει,

γι’ αυτό ποτέ δεν είναι ευτυχής.

22 Μέσα στην αφθονία θα στερείται·

η αθλιότητα θα πέσει απάνω του βαριά.

23 Θα ’χει αρκετά για να γεμίσει την κοιλιά του,

όταν τη φοβερή του οργή ο Θεός

θα ρίξει σαν χαλάζι πάνω του·

από το γεύμα αυτό επιτέλους θα χορτάσει.

24 Ακόμα κι αν γλιτώσει από το ατσάλινο σπαθί,

χάλκινο τόξο θα τον ρίξει κάτω.

25 Το βέλος το κορμί του ασεβή διαπερνά,

βγαίνει απ’ τη ράχη του,

απ’ την αστραφτερή του αιχμή το αίμα στάζει·

και τότε τρόμος τον κυριεύει θανατερός.

26 Γι’ αυτόν φυλάγονται όλα τα σκοτάδια·

φωτιά, που χέρι ανθρώπινο δεν άναψε

θα τον καταβροχθίσει·

στάχτη θα κάνει καθετί

που στη σκηνή του απόμεινε.

27 Θα φανερώσουν οι ουρανοί την ανομία του,

και θα ξεσηκωθεί η γη

να τον κατηγορήσει.

28 Τα πλούτη του σπιτιού του θα χαθούν,

θα διασκορπιστούνε,

τη μέρα της οργής του Θεού.

29 Αυτή είν’ η ανταπόδοση που θα ’χει ο ασεβής,

αυτός ο κλήρος, που από το Θεό τού ορίστηκε.

23 When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating. 24 He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through. 25 It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him. 26 All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle. 27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. 28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath. 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.*20.29 appointed…: Heb. of his decree from God
