1 Γιατί δεν καθορίζει ο Παντοδύναμος της κρίσης τον καιρό,

ώστε οι δικοί του να τον δούνε

πώς δικάζει;

2 Οι άδικοι μετακινούν τα σύνορα

των χωραφιών,

ξένα κοπάδια αρπάζουνε

και στους δικούς τους κάμπους

τα βοσκάνε.

3 Παίρνουνε το γαϊδούρι απ’ τα ορφανά,

από τη χήρα αρπάζουν για

ενέχυρο το βόδι.

4 Παραμερίζουν τους φτωχούς στο δρόμο

κι όλους τους άπορους της χώρας

τους αναγκάζουνε να καταχωνιαστούν.

5 Και να που οι άμοιροι, σαν τα γαϊδούρια τ’ άγρια,

στην έρημο τραβούν απ’ την αυγή για να δουλέψουν,

να βρουν τροφή.

Και περιμένουν απ’ την έρημο να θρέψει τα παιδιά τους.

6 Μαζεύουν ό,τι απ’ το θέρο απόμεινε

στου πλούσιου το χωράφι

κι ό,τι απ’ τον τρύγο*Η ερμηνεία του εβρ. είναι αβέβαιη. απόμεινε στ’ αμπέλι του.

7 Γυμνοί περνούν τη νύχτα τους

και δίχως σκέπασμα,

από την παγωνιά να τους φυλάξει.

8 Μουσκεύουν πάνω στα βουνά απ’ τις νεροποντές,

στους βράχους πλάι στριμώχνονται

για να προστατευτούνε.

9 Αρπάζουνε το βρέφος που θηλάζει

οι άδικοι από τη χήρα μάνα του

και παίρνουν από το φτωχό

για ενέχυρο το ρούχο.

10 Έτσι οι φτωχοί δεν έχουν να ντυθούν·

γυμνοί πορεύονται

κι ενώ πεινούν,

φορτώνονται των πλούσιων τα δεμάτια.

11 Στων πλούσιων τα λιοτριβιά βγάζουν αυτοί το λάδι,

στα πατητήρια τους πατούν

κι ωστόσο αυτοί διψούν.

12 Στις πολιτείες οι δύστυχοι στενάζουν,

των πληγωμένων φθάνει ο ρόγχος στον ουρανό.

Μα ο Θεός δεν νοιάζεται για όλον αυτό τον παραλογισμό.

13 Όσοι είν’ υπαίτιοι γι’ αυτά, εχθρεύονται το φως,

τους δρόμους τους δικούς του

δεν τους ξέρουν

κι ούτε βαδίζουνε στα μονοπάτια του.

14 Στο χάραμα σηκώνεται ο φονιάς,

σκοτώνει τον φτωχό και τον αδύναμο,

και γίνεται τη νύχτα κλέφτης.

15 Βλέπει ο μοιχός πότε το σούρουπο θα ’ρθεί·

κάλυμμα ρίχνει μπρος στο πρόσωπό του

κι έτσι νομίζει πως κανείς δε θα τον δει.

16 Τη νύχτα οι κλέφτες μπαίνουν μες στα σπίτια

αλλά τη μέρα κρύβονται

και τ’ αποφεύγουνε το φως.

17 Για όλους αυτούς η μέρα αρχίζει

όταν νυχτώνει

και το σκοτάδι τρόμο δεν τους προκαλεί.

18 Τους ασεβείς τους παίρνει το ποτάμι,

καταραμένα είν’ τα χωράφια τους·

στ’ αμπέλια τους δε θα γυρίσει πια κανείς.

19 Όπως το χιόνι ο καύσωνας το λιώνει

και το ρουφάει η ξεραμένη γη,

έτσι κι ο άδης καταπίνει

αυτόν που αμάρτησε.

20 Τον λησμονάει ακόμα κι η ίδια του η μάνα

και γίνεται των σκουληκιών τροφή.

Κανένας πια για κείνον δε μιλάει.

Έτσι σαν δέντρο η αδικία έχει κοπεί.

21 Κι αυτά επειδή άσκημα φέρθηκε στις στείρες

και άφησε τις χήρες ανυπεράσπιστες.

22 Μα έχει ο Θεός τη δύναμη

τους ισχυρούς να τους σαρώνει·

ορθώνεται κι εκείνοι χάνουν

κάθε βεβαιότητα ζωής.

23 Κάποτε τους αφήνει να ζούνε σε ασφάλεια,

κι ωστόσο παρακολουθούν τα μάτια του

τον τρόπο της ζωής τους.

24 Για λίγο υψώνονται, μα ύστερα πια τίποτα·

μαραίνονται σαν τα κομμένα τ’ άνθη·

πέφτουν στη γη σαν στάχυα που τα θέρισαν.

25 Έτσι δεν είναι;

ποιος μπορεί να με διαψεύσει

και ν’ αποδείξει το αντίθετο;

13 They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof. 14 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. 15 The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.*24.15 disguiseth…: Heb. setteth his face in secret 16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light. 17 For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.
