1 Ο Κύριος είπε στο Σαμουήλ: «Ως πότε θα είσαι λυπημένος για το Σαούλ, που τον απέρριψα από το βασιλικό του αξίωμα στον Ισραήλ; Γέμισε το δοχείο σου με λάδι και πήγαινε. Εγώ σε στέλνω στον Ιεσσαί, το Βηθλεεμίτη, γιατί έχω βρει ανάμεσα στους γιους του, το βασιλιά που χρειάζομαι». 2 Ο Σαμουήλ απάντησε: «Πώς να πάω; Άμα το μάθει ο Σαούλ θα με σκοτώσει». Ο Κύριος είπε: «Πάρε μαζί σου ένα νεαρό δαμάλι και θα πεις ότι πήγες εκεί για να προσφέρεις θυσία στον Κύριο. 3 Στην τελετή θα προσκαλέσεις και τον Ιεσσαί κι εγώ θα σου φανερώσω τι να κάνεις· θα μου χρίσεις βασιλιά εκείνον που θα σου πω». 4 Ο Σαμουήλ έκανε όπως του είπε ο Κύριος και πήγε στη Βηθλεέμ. Οι πρεσβύτεροι της πόλης έτρεξαν φοβισμένοι να τον προϋπαντήσουν και τον ρωτούσαν: «Ήρθες για καλό;» 5 «Για καλό» απάντησε εκείνος. «Ήρθα για να προσφέρω θυσία στον Κύριο. Εξαγνιστείτε κι ελάτε μαζί μου στην τελετή». Κάλεσε επίσης τον Ιεσσαί και τους γιους του να εξαγνιστούν και να συμμετάσχουν στη θυσία.

6 Όταν έφταναν εκεί, είδε ο Σαμουήλ τον Ελιάβ και σκέφτηκε: «Ασφαλώς, ο άνθρωπος που στέκεται εδώ ενώπιον του Κυρίου, αυτός είναι ο εκλεκτός του». 7 Αλλά ο Κύριος είπε στο Σαμουήλ: «Μη σου κάνει εντύπωση η μορφή του και το ψηλό του ανάστημα, γιατί εγώ δεν τον εγκρίνω. Εγώ δεν κρίνω με ανθρώπινα κριτήρια. Ο άνθρωπος βλέπει τα φαινόμενα, εγώ όμως βλέπω την καρδιά».

8 Τότε κάλεσε ο Ιεσσαί τον Αβιναδάβ και τον παρουσίασε στο Σαμουήλ, αλλά ο Σαμουήλ είπε: «Ούτε αυτόν τον διάλεξε ο Κύριος». 9 Μετά ο Ιεσσαί παρουσίασε τον Σαμμά. «Ούτε αυτόν τον διάλεξε ο Κύριος», είπε ο Σαμουήλ. 10 Ο Ιεσσαί παρουσίασε εφτά από τους γιους του στο Σαμουήλ. Κι ο Σαμουήλ του είπε: «Κανέναν απ’ αυτούς δεν έχει διαλέξει ο Κύριος». 11 Μετά τον ρώτησε: «Αυτά είναι όλα τα παιδιά σου;» Εκείνος απάντησε: «Απομένει ακόμα ο μικρότερος, αλλ’ αυτός βόσκει τα πρόβατα». «Στείλε και φέρ’ τον», του είπε ο Σαμουήλ· «δε θα καθίσουμε στο τραπέζι πριν να ’ρθεί κι αυτός εδώ».

12 Ο Ιεσσαί έστειλε κι έφερε το Δαβίδ. Ήταν ξανθός, με σπινθηροβόλο βλέμμα κι ωραίο πρόσωπο. Ο Κύριος είπε στο Σαμουήλ: «Σήκω και χρίσε τον, αυτός είναι». 13 Πήρε λοιπόν ο Σαμουήλ το δοχείο με το λάδι και τον έχρισε βασιλιά μπροστά στους αδερφούς του. Τότε ήρθε το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου στο Δαβίδ κι από κείνη την ημέρα έμεινε μαζί του. Μετά ο Σαμουήλ έφυγε και γύρισε στη Ραμά.

14 Το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου είχε πια φύγει από το Σαούλ, και τον τυραννούσε ένα κακό πνεύμα σταλμένο από τον Κύριο. 15 Οι δούλοι του Σαούλ του είπαν: «Ξέρουμε πως σε τυραννάει ένα κακό πνεύμα, σταλμένο από το Θεό. 16 Δώσε όμως, κύριέ μας, μια διαταγή κι εμείς είμαστε εδώ στη διάθεσή σου. Θα ψάξουμε και θα βρούμε κάποιον που να ξέρει να παίζει άρπα· κι όταν το κακό πνεύμα έρχεται πάνω σου σταλμένο απ’ το Θεό, τότε ο μουσικός θα παίζει την άρπα και θα γίνεσαι καλά».

17 Ο Σαούλ διέταξε τους δούλους του: «Βρέστε μου, λοιπόν, έναν άνθρωπο που να παίζει καλά και φέρτε τον εδώ σ’ εμένα». 18 Ένας από τους υπηρέτες είπε: «Εγώ γνωρίζω έναν γιο του Ιεσσαί, του Βηθλεεμίτη, που ξέρει να παίζει άρπα· είναι άνθρωπος αξιόλογος και πολεμιστής γενναίος· μιλάει με φρόνηση, έχει ωραία εμφάνιση και είναι ο Κύριος μαζί του».

19 Τότε ο Σαούλ έστειλε αγγελιοφόρους και είπε στον Ιεσσαί: «Στείλε μου το γιο σου το Δαβίδ, αυτόν που βόσκει τα πρόβατα». 20 Τότε ο Ιεσσαί πήρε ένα γαϊδούρι, το φόρτωσε ψωμιά, ένα ασκί κρασί κι ένα κατσίκι και τα έστειλε με το Δαβίδ στο Σαούλ. 21 Ο Δαβίδ ήρθε στο Σαούλ και παρουσιάστηκε μπροστά του. Εκείνος τον συμπάθησε πολύ και τον έκανε οπλοφόρο του. 22 Έστειλε και μήνυμα στον Ιεσσαί: «Ας μείνει σε παρακαλώ, ο Δαβίδ μαζί μου», του έλεγε, «γιατί έχει κερδίσει την εύνοιά μου».

23 Έτσι, όποτε ο Θεός έστελνε το κακό πνεύμα στο Σαούλ, ο Δαβίδ έπαιρνε στα χέρια του την άρπα κι έπαιζε, και ο Σαούλ ανακουφιζόταν· το κακό πνεύμα έφευγε από πάνω του και ηρεμούσε.

1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. 2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.*16.2 with thee: Heb. in thine hand 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?*16.4 coming: Heb. meeting 5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.*16.6 Eliab: called Elihu 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.*16.7 outward…: Heb. eyes 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.*16.9 Shammah: Shimeah, also called, Shimma 10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.*16.11 down: Heb. round 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.*16.14 troubled: or, terrified 15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. 16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. 17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. 18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.*16.18 matters: or, speech

19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. 20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. 21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. 23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
