1 Μετά από έναν περίπου μήνα, ήρθε ο Ναχάς, βασιλιάς των Αμμωνιτών, να πολιορκήσει την Ιαβές στη Γαλαάδ. Οι κάτοικοι της Ιαβές είπαν στο Ναχάς: «Κάνε μαζί μας συνθήκη κι εμείς θα γίνουμε δούλοι σου». 2 Ο Ναχάς τους είπε: «Θα κάνω μαζί σας συνθήκη αλλά με τον εξής όρο: να βγάλω το δεξί μάτι ολονών σας κι έτσι να εξευτελίσω όλο το λαό του Ισραήλ». 3 Οι πρεσβύτεροι της Ιαβές του απάντησαν: «Δώσε μας εφτά μέρες προθεσμία να στείλουμε αγγελιοφόρους σ’ όλη τη χώρα του Ισραήλ· αν δεν υπάρξει κανείς να έρθει για βοήθειά μας, τότε θα παραδοθούμε σ’ εσένα».

4 Οι αγγελιοφόροι ήρθαν στη Γιβεά, την πόλη του Σαούλ, και ανακοίνωσαν στο λαό της τη συμφωνία τους. Τότε όλοι ξέσπασαν σε θρήνο δυνατό. 5 Εκείνη ακριβώς την ώρα, ο Σαούλ ερχόταν από το χωράφι οδηγώντας τα βόδια του. «Τι συμβαίνει στο λαό και κλαίνε;» ρώτησε. Και του ανέφεραν τι είπαν οι άντρες που είχαν έρθει από την Ιαβές. 6 Αυτός όταν τ’ άκουσε τον κατέλαβε το Πνεύμα του Θεού και φούντωσε από θυμό. 7 Πήρε ένα ζευγάρι βόδια, τα κομμάτιασε κι έστειλε τα κομμάτια τους με αγγελιοφόρους σ’ όλη τη χώρα του Ισραήλ με τα εξής λόγια: «Όποιος δεν ακολουθήσει το Σαούλ και το Σαμουήλ, τα βόδια του θα πάθουν τα ίδια!»

Τότε έπεσε φόβος Κυρίου πάνω στο λαό κι έτρεξαν όλοι σαν ένας άνθρωπος. 8 Ο Σαούλ τους μέτρησε στη Βέζεκ, και βρέθηκαν τριακόσιες χιλιάδες άντρες από την περιοχή του Ισραήλ και τριάντα χιλιάδες από τον Ιούδα.

9 Τότε είπαν στους αγγελιοφόρους που είχαν έρθει: «Πείτε στους κατοίκους της Ιαβές, στη Γαλαάδ, ότι αύριο κατά το μεσημέρι θα σας έρθει βοήθεια». Οι αγγελιοφόροι πήγαν και τα ανάγγειλαν αυτά στους κατοίκους της Ιαβές. Εκείνοι χάρηκαν, 10 και πήγαν κι είπαν στο Ναχάς τον Αμμωνίτη: «Αύριο θα σας παραδοθούμε και κάντε μας ό,τι σας αρέσει». 11 Την άλλη μέρα χώρισε ο Σαούλ το στρατό σε τρία τμήματα. Τα ξημερώματα μπήκαν μέσα στο εχθρικό στρατόπεδο από τη μια άκρη ως την άλλη και ως το μεσημέρι είχαν κατασφάξει τους Αμμωνίτες. Όσοι γλίτωσαν, σκόρπισαν άλλος από ’δω κι άλλος από ’κει.

12 Τότε είπε ο λαός στο Σαμουήλ: «Ποιοι είν’ αυτοί που είπαν, να μη γίνει ο Σαούλ βασιλιάς μας; Παραδώστε μας αυτούς τους ανθρώπους να τους σκοτώσουμε». 13 Αλλά ο Σαούλ είπε: «Κανένας δε θα θανατωθεί τη σημερινή μέρα, γιατί σήμερα ο Κύριος ελευθέρωσε τον Ισραήλ». 14 Έπειτα ο Σαμουήλ είπε στο λαό: «Ελάτε να πάμε στα Γάλγαλα να ανακηρύξουμε το Σαούλ βασιλιά». 15 Έτσι πήγε όλος ο λαός στα Γάλγαλα κι εκεί, ενώπιον του Κυρίου, ανακήρυξαν το Σαούλ βασιλιά· πρόσφεραν θυσίες κοινωνίας στον Κύριο, κι έκαναν γιορτή μεγάλη, ο Σαούλ και όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες.

4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. 6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. 7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.*11.7 with…: Heb. as one man 8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.*11.9 help: or, deliverance 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. 11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. 13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. 14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. 15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
