1 Μια μέρα, ο Ιωνάθαν, γιος του Σαούλ, είπε στο νεαρό οπλοφόρο του: «Έλα να περάσουμε ως τη φρουρά των Φιλισταίων, που είναι εκεί απέναντι». Δε φανέρωσε όμως τίποτα στον πατέρα του. 2 Ο Σαούλ βρισκόταν στη Γιβεά, στην άκρη της πόλης, κάτω από τη ροδιά της Μιγρών· ο στρατός που ήταν μαζί του έφτανε περίπου τους εξακόσιους άντρες. 3 Ως ιερέας εκεί υπηρετούσε ο Αχιά, γιος του Αχιτούβ και ανεψιός του Ιχαβώδ, γιου του Φινεές και εγγονού του Ηλεί, που ήταν ιερέας του Κυρίου στη Σιλώ. Ο λαός δεν ήξερε ότι ο Ιωνάθαν είχε φύγει.

4 Ανάμεσα στις διαβάσεις, από όπου προσπαθούσε ο Ιωνάθαν να φτάσει στη φρουρά των Φιλισταίων, υπήρχε ένα πέρασμα μέσα από δύο βραχώδεις αιχμές. Η μια αιχμή ονομαζόταν Βωσές και η άλλη Σέννε. 5 Η πρώτη υψώνεται βόρεια και βλέπει προς τη Μιχμάς και η άλλη νότια και βλέπει προς τη Γεβά. 6 Ο Ιωνάθαν είπε στο νέο που σήκωνε τα όπλα του: «Έλα να περάσουμε ως τη φρουρά αυτών των απερίτμητων. Ίσως ο Κύριος κάνει κάτι για μας. Τίποτα δεν τον εμποδίζει να μας δώσει τη νίκη, αδιάφορο αν είμαστε πολλοί ή λίγοι». 7 Ο οπλοφόρος του τού είπε: «Όπως νομίζεις. Εγώ είμαι μαζί σου. Ό,τι θέλεις εσύ, το θέλω κι εγώ». 8 Τότε είπε ο Ιωνάθαν: «Κοίτα, θα προχωρήσουμε προς αυτούς τους άντρες και θα τους φανερωθούμε. 9 Αν μας πουν: "περιμένετε να έρθουμε προς το μέρος σας", τότε θα σταθούμε στη θέση μας και δε θα προχωρήσουμε προς αυτούς. 10 Αν όμως μας πουν: "ανεβείτε προς τα ’δω", τότε θα ανεβούμε, γιατί αυτό θα είναι για μας το σημάδι ότι ο Κύριος θα τους παραδώσει στην εξουσία μας».

11 Έτσι φανερώθηκαν στη φρουρά των Φιλισταίων. Εκείνοι όταν τους είδαν είπαν μεταξύ τους: «Να οι Εβραίοι, βγαίνουν απ’ τις κρυψώνες τους». 12 Τότε οι άντρες της φρουράς φώναξαν στον Ιωνάθαν και στον οπλοφόρο του: «Ανεβείτε προς τα ’δω να σας πούμε κάτι». Τότε ο Ιωνάθαν είπε στον οπλοφόρο του: «Ακολούθησέ με, γιατί ο Κύριος θα τους παραδώσει στους Ισραηλίτες». 13 Σκαρφάλωσε, λοιπόν, ο Ιωνάθαν με τα χέρια του και με τα πόδια του και ο οπλοφόρος του τον ακολουθούσε. Ο Ιωνάθαν χτυπούσε κι έριχνε κάτω τους Φιλισταίους, ενώ ο οπλοφόρος πίσω του τους σκότωνε.

14 Στην πρώτη αυτή σφαγή, ο Ιωνάθαν κι ο οπλοφόρος του σκότωσαν περίπου είκοσι άντρες, μέσα σε μισό στρέμμα γης. 15 Τρόμος επικράτησε στο στρατόπεδο, στα χωράφια και σ’ όλο τον στρατό των Φιλισταίων· η φρουρά και οι καταδρομείς τρόμαξαν κι αυτοί. Κοντά σ’ αυτά, η γη σείστηκε και δημιουργήθηκε πανικός σαν να προερχόνταν από το Θεό.

16 Οι παρατηρητές του Σαούλ, από τη Γιβεά στην περιοχή Βενιαμίν, είδαν ότι στο στρατόπεδο των Φιλισταίων έπεσε πανικός και το πλήθος έφευγε από ’δω κι από ’κει. 17 Τότε ο Σαούλ είπε στο στρατό του: «Μετρηθείτε, να δείτε ποιος έφυγε από ’δω». Μετρήθηκαν και είδαν ότι έλειπε ο Ιωνάθαν και ο οπλοφόρος του. 18 Τότε είπε ο Σαούλ στον Αχιά: «Φέρε το εφώδ»,*εφώδ, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «την κιβωτό». γιατί εκείνο τον καιρό αυτός υπηρετούσε ως ιερέας στους Ισραηλίτες. 19 Ενώ ο Σαούλ μιλούσε ακόμα με τον ιερέα, ο θόρυβος στο στρατόπεδο των Φιλισταίων γινόταν ολοένα και μεγαλύτερος. Έτσι ο Σαούλ είπε στον ιερέα: «Δε χρειάζεται να συμβουλευτείς τον Κύριο». 20 Τότε ο Σαούλ και ο στρατός του συγκεντρώθηκαν και προχώρησαν στο σημείο όπου θα δινόταν η μάχη. Βλέπουν τότε τους Φιλισταίους να σφάζονται μεταξύ τους μέσα σε μια απερίγραπτη σύγχυση.

21 Μερικοί Εβραίοι που είχαν προσχωρήσει στους Φιλισταίους και είχαν έρθει από ’κει γύρω στο στρατόπεδό τους, ενώθηκαν τώρα κι αυτοί με τους Ισραηλίτες που ήταν μαζί με το Σαούλ και τον Ιωνάθαν. 22 Επίσης οι Ισραηλίτες που είχαν κρυφτεί στην ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ, όταν άκουσαν ότι οι Φιλισταίοι είχαν τραπεί σε φυγή, τους καταδίωξαν κι αυτοί πολεμώντας τους. 23 Εκείνη την ημέρα ο Κύριος ελευθέρωσε τους Ισραηλίτες, κι ο πόλεμος επεκτάθηκε και πέρα από τη Βαιθ-Αυέν.

24 Ο στρατός που ακολουθούσε το Σαούλ έφτανε περίπου τους δέκα χιλιάδες άντρες. Ο πόλεμος επεκτάθηκε σ’ όλη την ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ. Αλλά ο Σαούλ έκανε εκείνη τη μέρα ένα μεγάλο σφάλμα: Απείλησε το στρατό του με μια κατάρα. «Καταραμένος», είπε, «ο άνθρωπος που θα φάει τροφή ως το βράδυ κι ώσπου να πάρω εκδίκηση από τους εχθρούς μου».*Η νηστεία αυτή πιθανώς αποτελεί πρακτική που αποσκοπούσε στην επίτευξη βοήθειας από το Θεό για να νικήσουν τον εχθρό. Έτσι κανένας από το λαό δεν έφαγε τίποτα. 25 Ήρθαν όλοι σ’ ένα δάσος, όπου υπήρχε πολύ μέλι, ακόμα και κάτω στο έδαφος. 26 Μπαίνοντας στο δάσος, οι στρατιώτες είδαν το μέλι να τρέχει άφθονο αλλά κανείς δεν άπλωνε χέρι να φάει, γιατί φοβούνταν τον όρκο.

27 Ο Ιωνάθαν όμως δεν ήξερε ότι ο πατέρας του είχε δεσμεύσει με τον όρκο το στρατό. Έτσι άπλωσε την άκρη του ραβδιού του, τη βούτηξε σε μια κερήθρα μέλι, έφαγε και τονώθηκε. 28 Τότε ένας στρατιώτης τού φώναξε: «Ο πατέρας σου έχει επιβάλει βαρύ όρκο στο στρατό: Καταραμένος ο άνθρωπος που θα φάει σήμερα τροφή». Γι’ αυτό είναι όλοι τους εξαντλημένοι. 29 Ο Ιωνάθαν απάντησε: «Ο πατέρας μου έφερε δυστυχία στη χώρα. Κοιτάξτε εγώ πώς αναζωογονήθηκα μόλις δοκίμασα λίγο απ’ αυτό το μέλι. 30 Πόσο καλύτερα θα αισθανόταν ο λαός σήμερα αν έτρωγε καλά από τα λάφυρα που πήρε απ’ τους εχθρούς του! Η σφαγή των Φιλισταίων θα ήταν πολύ μεγαλύτερη».

31 Εκείνη τη μέρα οι Ισραηλίτες χτύπησαν τους Φιλισταίους από τη Μιχμάς ως την Αϊαλών, αλλά ο στρατός ήταν πάρα πολύ εξαντλημένος. 32 Έτσι ρίχτηκαν όλοι στα λάφυρα: πήραν πρόβατα, βόδια και μοσχάρια· τα έσφαξαν επί τόπου και τα έτρωγαν με το αίμα. 33 Όταν ανάγγειλαν στο Σαούλ ότι ο στρατός αμάρτανε ενώπιον του Κυρίου τρώγοντας και το αίμα των ζώων, αυτός είπε: «Είσαστε παραβάτες! Κυλίστε μου εδώ αμέσως ένα μεγάλο λιθάρι». 34 Μετά τους είπε: «Σκορπιστείτε ανάμεσα στους στρατιώτες και πέστε τους να μου φέρουν εδώ καθένας το βόδι του ή το αρνί του και να τα σφάξουν εδώ και να τα φάνε· και να μην αμαρτάνουν ενώπιον του Κυρίου τρώγοντας το αίμα». Εκείνη τη νύχτα, λοιπόν, έφεραν όλοι τα ζώα τους και τα έσφαξαν εκεί. 35 Έτσι έχτισε ο Σαούλ θυσιαστήριο για τον Κύριο.

Αυτό ήταν το πρώτο θυσιαστήριο που έχτισε.

36 Έπειτα ο Σαούλ έδωσε διαταγή: «Ας κατεβούμε να επιτεθούμε στους Φιλισταίους τη νύχτα· ως το πρωί θα τους έχουμε εξοντώσει· δε θα μείνει κανένας από δαύτους». Οι στρατιώτες τού απάντησαν: «Κάνε όπως νομίζεις». Κι ο ιερέας είπε: «Ας συμβουλευτούμε πρώτα το Θεό». 37 Ο Σαούλ ρώτησε το Θεό: «Να καταδιώξω τους Φιλισταίους; Θα τους παραδώσεις στην εξουσία μας;» Αλλά εκείνη την ημέρα ο Θεός δεν του αποκρίθηκε. 38 Διέταξε τότε ο Σαούλ: «Πλησιάστε εδώ όλοι οι αξιωματικοί του στρατού και ψάξτε να βρείτε ποια αμαρτία έγινε σήμερα. 39 Ορκίζομαι στον αληθινό Θεό, που ελευθέρωσε τον Ισραήλ, ότι ακόμη κι αν ο γιος μου ο Ιωνάθαν βρεθεί ένοχος, οπωσδήποτε θα πεθάνει». Κανείς όμως από το στρατό δεν του είπε τίποτα.

40 Αυτός συνέχισε: «Όλοι εσείς σταθείτε από το ένα μέρος, κι εγώ με τον Ιωνάθαν θα σταθούμε από το άλλο». Οι στρατιώτες τού απάντησαν «Κάνε όπως νομίζεις». 41 Τότε ο Σαούλ ρώτησε τον Κύριο: «Θεέ του Ισραήλ, γιατί δεν αποκρίθηκες σήμερα στο δούλο σου; Κύριε, Θεέ του Ισραήλ, αν είμαι ένοχος εγώ ή ο γιος μου Ιωνάθαν, ας βγει ο κλήρος Ουρίμ· αν όμως είναι ένοχος ο λαός Ισραήλ,*Θεέ του Ισραήλ...δούλο σου...αν είμαι ένοχος...λαός Ισραήλ, κατά τους Ο΄. Στο εβρ. αυτές οι φρ. δεν υπάρχουν. τότε ας βγει ο κλήρος Θουμμίμ».*Ουρίμ...Θουμμίμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Εξ 28:30.

Ο κλήρος έπεσε στον Ιωνάθαν και στο Σαούλ, ενώ ο στρατός αποδείχτηκε αθώος. 42 Τότε είπε ο Σαούλ: «Ρίξτε κλήρο ανάμεσα σ’ εμένα και στον Ιωνάθαν». Κι ο κλήρος έπεσε στον Ιωνάθαν. 43 Τότε ρώτησε ο Σαούλ τον Ιωνάθαν: «Πες μου τι έκανες». Κι ο Ιωνάθαν του τα φανέρωσε όλα: «Δοκίμασα λίγο μέλι», του είπε, «με την άκρη του ραβδιού μου. Αλλά, νά, είμαι έτοιμος να πεθάνω». 44 Ο Σαούλ απάντησε: «Ο Θεός να με τιμωρήσει σκληρά αν δεν πεθάνεις, Ιωνάθαν».

45 Αλλά οι στρατιώτες είπαν στο Σαούλ: «Ο Ιωνάθαν θα πεθάνει; Αυτός που έφερε τέτοια μεγάλη νίκη στον Ισραήλ; Αυτό δε θα γίνει ποτέ. Ορκιζόμαστε στον αληθινό Θεό, πως ούτε μια τρίχα από το κεφάλι του δε θα πέσει στη γη, γιατί με τη βοήθεια του Θεού έπραξε ό,τι έπραξε σήμερα». Έτσι ο λαός γλίτωσε τον Ιωνάθαν από βέβαιο θάνατο.

46 Μετά απ’ αυτά, ο Σαούλ σταμάτησε την καταδίωξη των Φιλισταίων, κι εκείνοι γύρισαν πίσω στον τόπο τους.

47 Από τότε που έγινε ο Σαούλ βασιλιάς στο λαό Ισραήλ, πολέμησε όλους τους εχθρούς του ολόγυρα. Τους Μωαβίτες, τους Αμμωνίτες, τους Εδωμίτες, τα βασίλεια της Σωβά κι εκείνα των Φιλισταίων. Όπου κι αν στρεφόταν νικούσε.*νικούσε, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «έκανε το κακό».48 Έδειξε γενναιότητα και νίκησε τους Αμαληκίτες, και έσωσε τους Ισραηλίτες από κείνους που τους λεηλατούσαν.

49 Γιοι του Σαούλ ήταν ο Ιωνάθαν, ο Ισβί*Ισβί. Πιθανώς το ίδιο πρόσωπο με τον Ισβόσεθ εις Β΄ Σαμ 2:8 κ.εξ. και ο Μαλκί-Σουά. Τα ονόματα των δύο θυγατέρων του ήταν: Μεράβ της πρωτότοκης και Μιχάλ της μικρότερης. 50 Η γυναίκα του Σαούλ ονομαζόταν Αχινοάμ, και ήταν κόρη του Αχιμάας· ο αρχιστράτηγός του ονομαζόταν Αβενήρ, και ήταν γιος του Νηρ, θείου του Σαούλ. 51 Ο Κις, πατέρας του Σαούλ, και ο Νηρ, πατέρας του Αβενήρ, ήταν γιοι του Αβιήλ.

52 Όσον καιρό ήταν βασιλιάς ο Σαούλ πολεμούσε σκληρά εναντίον των Φιλισταίων. Κι όταν έβλεπε κάποιον άντρα γενναίο και δυνατό, τον έπαιρνε στο στρατό του.

1 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. 4 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.*14.5 forefront: Heb. tooth 6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few. 7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart. 8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them. 9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.*14.9 Tarry: Heb. Be still 10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us. 11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves. 12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel. 13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him. 14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.*14.14 an…: or, half a furrow of an acre of land 15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.*14.15 a very…: Heb. a trembling of God

16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another. 17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there. 18 And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.*14.19 noise: or, tumult 20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.*14.20 assembled…: Heb. were cried together 21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle. 23 So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth-aven.

24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food. 25 And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground. 26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. 28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.*14.28 faint: or, weary 29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines? 31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint. 32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.*14.33 transgressed: or, dealt treacherously 34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. 36 And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God. 37 And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day. 38 And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.*14.38 chief: Heb. corners 39 For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. 40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee. 41 Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die. 44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan. 45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not. 46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them. 48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.*14.48 gathered…: or, wrought mightily 49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchi-shua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal: 50 And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.*14.50 Abner: Heb.
