1 Εκείνο τον καιρό υπήρχε ένας ισχυρός και πλούσιος άνθρωπος από τη φυλή Βενιαμίν που ονομαζόταν Κις, γιος του Αβιήλ. Ο Αβιήλ ήταν γιος του Σερώρ, εγγονός του Βεχωράθ και δισέγγονος του Αφίαχ, του Βενιαμινίτη. 2 Ο Κις είχε έναν γιο που ονομαζόταν Σαούλ και ήταν νέος και ωραίος. Δεν υπήρχε ωραιότερος άνθρωπος απ’ αυτόν ανάμεσα στους Ισραηλίτες. Ήταν ένα κεφάλι ψηλότερος από κάθε άλλον μέσα σ’ όλο το λαό.

3 Μια μέρα χάθηκαν τα θηλυκά γαϊδούρια του Κις, πατέρα του Σαούλ. Τότε ο Κις είπε στο γιο του: «Πάρε μαζί σου έναν από τους υπηρέτες και πήγαινε να ψάξεις για τα γαϊδούρια». 4 Ο Σαούλ και ο υπηρέτης του πέρασαν από την ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ κι από την περιοχή Σαλισά, αλλά δεν τα βρήκαν. Πέρασαν από την περιοχή Σααλίμ, αλλά δεν ήταν ούτ’ εκεί. Πέρασαν κι από την περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν και δε βρήκαν τίποτε. 5 Όταν έφτασαν στη χώρα Σουφ, ο Σαούλ είπε στον υπηρέτη που τον συνόδευε: «Πάμε να γυρίσουμε πίσω, γιατί ο πατέρας μου θα πάψει να νοιάζεται για τα γαϊδούρια και θ’ αρχίσει ν’ ανησυχεί για μας».

6 Εκείνος απάντησε: «Στην πόλη αυτή κατοικεί ένας άνθρωπος του Θεού. Τον εκτιμούν όλοι και καθετί που λέει βγαίνει σίγουρα αληθινό. Έλα να πάμε σ’ αυτόν· ίσως μας φανερώσει ποιο δρόμο πρέπει ν’ ακολουθήσουμε για την έρευνά μας».

7 Ο Σαούλ είπε: «Αν πάμε, τι θα προσφέρουμε σ’ αυτόν τον άνθρωπο; Το ψωμί στα ταγάρια μας τέλειωσε· δεν έχουμε κάποιο δώρο να δώσουμε στον άνθρωπο αυτό του Θεού· τι άλλο έχουμε;»

8 Ο δούλος αποκρίθηκε: «Εδώ έχω ένα τέταρτο του ασημένιου σίκλου· θα το δώσω στον άνθρωπο του Θεού και θα μας φανερώσει το δρόμο μας».

9 Τον παλιό καιρό, όταν ένας Ισραηλίτης ήθελε να πάει να ρωτήσει για κάτι το Θεό έλεγε: «Πάμε στον Βλέποντα». Γιατί αυτός που σήμερα ονομάζεται προφήτης παλιά ονομαζόταν «Βλέπων». 10 Τότε ο Σαούλ απάντησε στον υπηρέτη του: «Καλά τα λες· έλα να πάμε». Και πήγαν στην πόλη, όπου ήταν ο άνθρωπος του Θεού. 11 Ενώ αυτοί ανέβαιναν την ανηφόρα για την πόλη, συνάντησαν μερικά κορίτσια, που κατέβαιναν για να βγάλουν νερό. «Είναι εδώ ο Βλέπων;» τις ρώτησαν. 12 Εκείνες τους αποκρίθηκαν: «Ναι, μόλις ήρθε, λίγο πριν από σας. Ήρθε στην πόλη μας σήμερα γιατί ο λαός θα προσφέρει θυσία στον ιερό τόπο. Βιαστείτε 13 να τον συναντήσετε μόλις μπείτε στην πόλη, πριν ανεβεί στον ιερό τόπο για το γεύμα. Ο λαός δεν τρώει πριν έρθει αυτός να ευλογήσει τη θυσία. Μετά τρώνε οι καλεσμένοι. Ανεβείτε, λοιπόν, τώρα γιατί αυτή την ώρα θα τον συναντήσετε».

14 Ανέβηκαν, λοιπόν, για την πόλη, και μόλις έμπαιναν σ’ αυτήν, ο Σαμουήλ έβγαινε μπροστά τους, για ν’ ανεβεί στον ιερό τόπο. 15 Την προηγούμενη μέρα ο Κύριος είχε φανερώσει στο Σαμουήλ τα εξής: 16 «Αύριο την ίδια ώρα, θα σου στείλω έναν άντρα από την περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν, να τον χρίσεις ηγεμόνα του λαού μου, του Ισραήλ. Αυτός θα τους ελευθερώσει από τους Φιλισταίους. Είδα τη δυστυχία του λαού μου και η κραυγή τους για βοήθεια έφτασε σ’ εμένα». 17 Όταν ο Σαμουήλ είδε το Σαούλ, ο Κύριος του είπε: «Να ο άνθρωπος για τον οποίο σου μίλησα· αυτός θα βασιλέψει στο λαό μου».

18 Ο Σαούλ πλησίασε το Σαμουήλ στην πύλη της πόλης και του είπε: «Δείξε μου, σε παρακαλώ, πού είναι το σπίτι του Βλέποντος». 19 Ο Σαμουήλ του αποκρίθηκε: «Εγώ είμαι ο Βλέπων. Προχώρησε πριν από μένα ν’ ανεβούμε στον ιερό τόπο. Σήμερα θα φάτε μαζί μου και αύριο το πρωί θα σου απαντήσω για όλα όσα έχεις στο νου σου. Μετά θα σε αφήσω να φύγεις. 20 Για τα γαϊδούρια που είναι χαμένα εδώ και τρεις μέρες μη νοιάζεσαι, γιατί βρέθηκαν. Αλλά σε ποιον στρέφονται τώρα οι προσδοκίες των Ισραηλιτών; Σ’ εσένα στρέφονται και στην οικογένεια του πατέρα σου». 21 Ο Σαούλ αποκρίθηκε: «Μα πώς; Εγώ δεν είμαι παρά ένας Βενιαμινίτης, μέλος της πιο μικρής απ’ τις φυλές του Ισραήλ και η οικογένειά μου είναι η πιο μικρή απ’ όλες τις οικογένειες της φυλής Βενιαμίν. Πώς μου λες τέτοια πράγματα;»

22 Τότε ο Σαμουήλ πήρε το Σαούλ και τον υπηρέτη του, και τους οδήγησε στο δωμάτιο· τους έβαλε στην πρώτη θέση ανάμεσα στους καλεσμένους, που ήταν περίπου τριάντα άντρες. 23 Ο Σαμουήλ είπε στο μάγειρα: «Φέρε μου τη μερίδα, που σου έδωσα και σου είπα να τη φυλάξεις». 24 Ο μάγειρας πήρε το μπούτι και την παχιά ουρά και τα έβαλε μπροστά στο Σαούλ. Τότε ο Σαμουήλ είπε: «Αυτό που έβαλαν μπροστά σου έχει φυλαχθεί για σένα, για να το φας τώρα μαζί με τους καλεσμένους· τρώγε».

Έτσι ο Σαούλ έφαγε εκείνη τη μέρα μαζί με το Σαμουήλ. 25 Όταν κατέβηκαν από τον ιερό τόπο στην πόλη, έστρωσαν στο Σαούλ*έστρωσαν στο Σαούλ, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «αυτός μίλησε στον Σαούλ». να κοιμηθεί στο δώμα του σπιτιού. Κοιμήθηκε και το πρωί σηκώθηκαν νωρίς.

26 Όταν πρόβαλε η αυγή, ο Σαμουήλ φώναξε το Σαούλ, που ήταν στο δώμα: «Σήκω και θα σε ξεπροβοδίσω», του είπε. Σηκώθηκε ο Σαούλ και βγήκαν έξω οι δυό τους, αυτός κι ο Σαμουήλ. 27 Ενώ έφταναν στην άκρη της πόλης, ο Σαμουήλ είπε στον Σαούλ: «Πες στον υπηρέτη να προχωρήσει πιο μπροστά». Ο υπηρέτης προχώρησε και ο Σαμουήλ συνέχισε: «Εσύ, όμως, περίμενε λίγο να σου πω το λόγο του Θεού».

3 And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses. 4 And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not. 5 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us. 6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go. 7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?*9.7 is spent…: Heb. is gone out of, etc*9.7 have we: Heb. is with us? 8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.*9.8 I have…: Heb. there is found in my hand 9 (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.) 10 Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. 11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?*9.11 the hill…: Heb. in the ascent of the city 12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:*9.12 sacrifice: or, feast 13 As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.*9.13 this time: Heb. to day 14 And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,*9.15 told…: Heb. revealed the ear of Samuel 16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me. 17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.*9.17 reign over: Heb. restrain in

18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is. 19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart. 20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?*9.20 three…: Heb. to day three days 21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?*9.21 so…: Heb. according to this word 22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons. 23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee. 24 And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. 25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house. 26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.*9.27 a while: Heb. to day
