1 Ο Δαβίδ έφυγε κι από ’κει και βρήκε καταφύγιο στο σπήλαιο Αδουλλάμ. Όταν το ’μαθαν οι αδερφοί του και όλοι οι συγγενείς του πατέρα του, πήγαν και τον βρήκαν εκεί. 2 Επίσης συγκεντρώθηκαν κοντά του όλοι οι καταπιεσμένοι, όλοι όσοι χρωστούσαν χρήματα, όλοι οι δυσαρεστημένοι· κι έγινε αρχηγός τους. Ήταν μαζί του περίπου τετρακόσιοι άντρες.

3 Από ’κει ο Δαβίδ έφυγε για τη Μισπά της Μωάβ και είπε στο βασιλιά της χώρας: «Σε παρακαλώ, ας μείνουν οι γονείς μου κοντά σας, ώσπου να δω τι θα κάνει για μένα ο Θεός». 4 Έτσι τους έφερε στο βασιλιά της Μωάβ και έμειναν εκεί όσον καιρό ο Δαβίδ ζούσε στη σπηλιά.

5 Μια μέρα ο προφήτης Γαδ είπε στο Δαβίδ: «Μη μείνεις άλλο στη σπηλιά. Φύγε και πήγαινε στην περιοχή του Ιούδα». Έτσι έφυγε ο Δαβίδ κι έφτασε στο δάσος Αρέθ.

6 Εκείνο τον καιρό ο Σαούλ βρισκόταν στη Γιβεά. Μια μέρα καθόταν κάτω από μια αρμυρίκη στο λόφο, κρατώντας το ακόντιο στο χέρι του, κι όλοι οι αξιωματούχοι του στέκονταν γύρω του. Εκεί έμαθε πως ανακαλύφθηκε ο Δαβίδ, καθώς και όλοι οι άντρες που τον ακολουθούσαν. 7 Είπε τότε ο Σαούλ στους δικούς του: «Ακούστε με, Βενιαμινίτες. Μήπως ο γιος του Ιεσσαί θα σας δώσει χωράφια και αμπέλια ή θα σας κάνει χιλίαρχους κι εκατόνταρχους; 8 Γιατί, λοιπόν, όλοι σας συνωμοτήσατε εναντίον μου; Δε βρέθηκε κανένας να μου φανερώσει ότι ο γιος μου είχε συνδεθεί με το γιο του Ιεσσαί; Κανένας σας δε βρέθηκε να με συμπαθεί και να με ειδοποιήσει, ότι ο γιος μου ξεσήκωσε το δούλο μου εναντίον μου; Να, λοιπόν, που σήμερα αυτός παραμονεύει να με σκοτώσει!»

9 Ο Δωέγ, ο Εδωμίτης, αρχηγός των δούλων του Σαούλ, του απάντησε: «Εγώ είδα το γιο του Ιεσσαί όταν ήρθε στη Νωβ, στον Αχιμέλεχ, το γιο του Αχιτούβ. 10 Ο Αχιμέλεχ συμβουλεύτηκε τον Κύριο γι’ αυτόν και του έδωσε τρόφιμα και το ξίφος του Γολιάθ, του Φιλισταίου».

11 Τότε έστειλε ο βασιλιάς να καλέσουν τον ιερέα Αχιμέλεχ κι όλη την οικογένεια του πατέρα του, που ήταν ιερείς στη Νωβ. Ήρθαν όλοι τους και παρουσιάστηκαν στο βασιλιά. 12 Ο Σαούλ είπε: «Άκουσε, λοιπόν, γιε του Αχιτούβ». Εκείνος απάντησε: «Ορίστε, κύριέ μου». 13 «Γιατί συνωμοτήσατε εναντίον μου», του είπε ο βασιλιάς, «εσύ κι ο γιος του Ιεσσαί, και του έδωσες ψωμί και ξίφος, και συμβουλεύτηκες το Θεό γι’ αυτόν, ώστε να ξεσηκωθεί εναντίον μου και σήμερα να παραμονεύει να με σκοτώσει;»

14 Ο Αχιμέλεχ του απάντησε: «Ποιος απ’ όλους τους δούλους σου σού είναι πιστός σαν το Δαβίδ; Είναι γαμπρός του βασιλιά, αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής σου κι απολαμβάνει μεγάλης τιμής στο ανάκτορό σου. 15 Μήπως ήταν η πρώτη φορά που συμβουλεύτηκα το Θεό γι’ αυτόν; Όχι βέβαια! Μην καταλογίζεις, λοιπόν βασιλιά μου, ευθύνες στο δούλο σου ούτε σε κανέναν από την οικογένεια του πατέρα μου. Ο δούλος σου δεν ήξερα τίποτε για όλη αυτή την υπόθεση».

16 Ο βασιλιάς όμως απάντησε: «Εξάπαντος θα πεθάνεις, Αχιμέλεχ, εσύ και όλη η οικογένεια του πατέρα σου». 17 Μετά είπε στους σωματοφύλακες που στέκονταν γύρω του: «Πηγαίνετε και σκοτώστε τους ιερείς του Κυρίου, γιατί βοήθησαν το Δαβίδ! Ήξεραν ότι αυτός προσπαθούσε να δραπετεύσει και δε μου το φανέρωσαν».

Αλλά οι σωματοφύλακες του Σαούλ δε θέλησαν ν’ απλώσουν χέρι στους ιερείς του Κυρίου και να τους σκοτώσουν. 18 Τότε είπε ο βασιλιάς στο Δωέγ τον Εδωμίτη: «Πήγαινε εσύ και σκότωσε τους ιερείς». Έτσι πήγε ο Δωέγ και τους σκότωσε. Εκείνη την ημέρα ο Σαούλ θανάτωσε ογδόντα πέντε άντρες, που φορούσαν το λινό εφώδ. 19 Επίσης ο Σαούλ παρέδωσε στη σφαγή όλους τους κατοίκους της Νωβ, της πόλης των ιερέων· θανάτωσε άντρες, γυναίκες, παιδιά και νήπια, βόδια, γαϊδούρια και πρόβατα.

20 Γλίτωσε όμως ο Αβιάθαρ, ένας από τους γιους του Αχιμέλεχ και εγγονός του Αχιτούβ. Αυτός πήγε στο Δαβίδ 21 και του ανάγγειλε ότι ο Σαούλ σκότωσε τους ιερείς του Κυρίου. 22 Τότε ο Δαβίδ είπε στον Αβιάθαρ: «Το κατάλαβα εγώ εκείνη την ημέρα, όταν είδα το Δωέγ, τον Εδωμίτη, να είναι εκεί, ότι αυτός οπωσδήποτε θα με πρόδιδε στο Σαούλ. Εγώ είμαι υπεύθυνος για όλους τους ανθρώπους της οικογένειας του πατέρα σου. 23 Μείνε κοντά μου και μη φοβάσαι. Αυτός που γυρεύει να σκοτώσει εσένα θέλει να σκοτώσει κι εμένα. Κοντά μου όμως θα είσαι ασφαλής».

3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. 4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.

5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)*22.6 tree…: or, grove in a high place 7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; 8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?*22.8 sheweth…: Heb. uncovereth mine ear

9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10 And he enquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. 11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.*22.12 Here…: Heb. Behold me 13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house? 15 Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.*22.15 less…: Heb. little or great 16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father’s house.

17 And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.*22.17 footmen: or, guard: Heb. runners 18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD’s priests. 22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father’s house. 23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
