1 Λόγος του Κυρίου, μήνυμα που το έστειλε στον Ισραήλ με το Μαλαχία.*Μαλαχία. Το όνομα σημαίνει «ο αγγελιοφόρος μου».

2 «Σας αγάπησα», είπε ο Κύριος. Εσείς όμως λέτε: «Πώς μας αγάπησες;»

Σ’ αυτό ο Κύριος απαντάει: «Δεν είναι ο Ησαύ αδερφός του Ιακώβ;*Ο Ησαύ είναι ο γενάρχης των Εδωμιτών, παραδοσιακού εχθρού των Ισραηλιτών. Ο Ιακώβ είναι ο γενάρχης των Ισραηλιτών (βλ. υποσ. εις Ωσ 12:4). Κι όμως εγώ αγάπησα τον Ιακώβ, 3 ενώ τον Ησαύ τον εγκατέλειψα· ερήμωσα τα βουνά του και παρέδωσα τη χώρα του στα τσακάλια. 4 Οι Εδωμίτες ισχυρίζονται ότι παρ’ όλο που καταστράφηκαν θα ξαναχτίσουν τις ερημωμένες πόλεις τους. Εγώ όμως, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέω: Άσ’ τους να χτίζουν. Εγώ θα τα γκρεμίσω. Η περιοχή τους θα ονομάζεται "ασεβής χώρα" και οι ίδιοι "λαός καταραμένος για πάντα από τον Κύριο". 5 Όταν το δείτε αυτό θα πείτε: "μεγάλος είναι ο Κύριος και πέρα ακόμα από τα σύνορα της χώρας του Ισραήλ"».

6 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος λέει στους ιερείς: «Ο γιος τιμάει τον πατέρα του και ο δούλος τον κύριό του. Αν εγώ είμαι ο πατέρας σας, πού είναι η τιμή που μου αποδίδετε; Κι αν εγώ είμαι Κύριός σας, πού είναι ο σεβασμός που μου έχετε; Με περιφρονείτε και ρωτάτε: "πώς σε περιφρονούμε;" 7 Με το να προσφέρετε στο θυσιαστήριό μου μιαρές προσφορές. Και ρωτάτε: "πώς μολύναμε το θυσιαστήριο;" Με το να μη δίνετε πολλή σημασία στο τραπέζι μου. 8 Όταν μου προσφέρετε θυσία τυφλό ζώο, νομίζετε πως αυτό είναι σωστό; Όταν μου προσφέρετε ένα κουτσό ή άρρωστο ζώο, νομίζετε πως αυτό είναι σωστό; Προσφέρτε το στον κυβερνήτη σας· θα ευχαριστηθεί; Θα σας δεχτεί ευνοϊκά; 9 Νομίζετε λοιπόν ότι θα εξευμενίσετε μ’ ένα τέτοιο δώρο έναν Θεό για να σας σπλαχνιστεί και να σας δεχτεί ευνοϊκά; Γιατί στην πραγματικότητα αυτό κάνετε! 10 Μακάρι κάποιος από σας να έκλεινε τις πόρτες του ναού για να μην ανάβετε άσκοπα φωτιά στο θυσιαστήριό μου. Δεν είμαι ευχαριστημένος από σας και δε θα δεχτώ καμιά θυσία από τα χέρια σας». Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος το λέει.

11 «Από την ανατολή μέχρι τη δύση μεγάλη είναι η φήμη μου ανάμεσα στα έθνη», λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος. «Σε κάθε τόπο προσφέρεται λιβάνι σ’ εμένα και θυσίες καθαρές, γιατί είμαι μεγάλος ανάμεσα στα έθνη. 12 Εσείς όμως με λησμονήσατε λέγοντας: "το τραπέζι του Κυρίου δεν έχει και μεγάλη σημασία. Μπορούμε να προσφέρουμε στο Θεό τροφή ό,τι έχουμε για πέταμα". 13 Και παρ’ όλα αυτά βαρυγκωμάτε: "τι κόπος", λέτε, "η υπηρεσία μας!" Έτσι εξοργίζετε εμένα, τον Κύριο του σύμπαντος. Προσφέρετε θυσία το κουτσό ζώο, το άρρωστο, ακόμη και το κλεμμένο. Μπορώ να το δεχτώ από τα χέρια σας;» Ο Κύριος το λέει.

14 «Αν κάποιος μου τάξει ένα ζώο χωρίς ελάττωμα από το κοπάδι του, αλλά με εξαπατήσει και μου προσφέρει θυσία ένα ζώο ευνουχισμένο, αυτός να είναι καταραμένος, γιατί εγώ είμαι μεγάλος βασιλιάς κι όλα τα έθνη με σέβονται». Αυτά λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος.
