1 Οι Φιλισταίοι συγκέντρωσαν το στρατό τους για πόλεμο. Συγκεντρώθηκαν στη Σοχώ, που βρίσκεται στην περιοχή της φυλής Ιούδα· και στρατοπέδευσαν στην Εφές-Δεμμίμ μεταξύ Σοχώ και Αζεκά. 2 Ο Σαούλ και ο στρατός των Ισραηλιτών συγκεντρώθηκαν κι αυτοί και στρατοπέδευσαν στην Κοιλάδα των Τερεβίνθων, για ν’ αντιμετωπίσουν τους Φιλισταίους. 3 Έτσι οι Φιλισταίοι παρατάχθηκαν στην πλαγιά ενός βουνού και οι Ισραηλίτες στην πλαγιά του απέναντι βουνού κι ανάμεσά τους ήταν η κοιλάδα.

4 Τότε βγήκε από το στρατόπεδο των Φιλισταίων, ένας μονομάχος πολεμιστής, που ονομαζόταν Γολιάθ, από τη Γαθ, που το ύψος του ήταν έξι πήχες και μια σπιθαμή.*έξι πήχες και μια σπιθαμή. Περίπου 3 μέτρα.5 Φορούσε χάλκινη περικεφαλαία στο κεφάλι του και χάλκινο αλυσιδωτό θώρακα, που το βάρος του ήταν πέντε χιλιάδες σίκλοι χαλκού. 6 Είχε χάλκινες περικνημίδες στα πόδια του και χάλκινο ακόντιο στους ώμους του. 7 Το ξύλο του δόρατός του ήταν χοντρό σαν το αντί του αργαλιού και η αιχμή του δόρατός του ζύγιζε εξακόσιους σίκλους σίδερο· αυτός που κρατούσε την ασπίδα του βάδιζε μπροστά του.

8 Ο Γολιάθ σταμάτησε και φώναξε προς τις γραμμές των Ισραηλιτών: «Γιατί βγήκατε να παραταχθείτε για πόλεμο; Εγώ είμαι ένας Φιλισταίος κι εσείς οι δούλοι του Σαούλ. Διαλέξτε, λοιπόν, απ’ ανάμεσά σας έναν άντρα κι ας έρθει ν’ αναμετρηθεί μαζί μου. 9 Αν καταφέρει να με νικήσει και να με σκοτώσει, τότε εμείς θα γίνουμε δούλοι σας. Αν όμως εγώ τον νικήσω και τον σκοτώσω, τότε εσείς θα γίνετε δούλοι μας υποτελείς». 10 Και κατέληξε: «Προκαλώ σήμερα τις ισραηλιτικές γραμμές: Δώστε μου έναν άντρα να μονομαχήσουμε». 11 Όταν άκουσαν αυτά τα λόγια του Φιλισταίου ο Σαούλ και οι Ισραηλίτες τα ’χασαν και πανικοβλήθηκαν.

12 Ο Δαβίδ ήταν γιος του Ιεσσαί του Εφραϊμίτη από τη Βηθλεέμ της φυλής Ιούδα. Ο Ιεσσαί είχε οχτώ γιους και στις μέρες του Σαούλ ήταν πια πάρα πολύ γέρος. 13,14 Οι τρεις μεγαλύτεροι γιοι του Ιεσσαί είχαν ακολουθήσει το Σαούλ στον πόλεμο. Ονομάζονταν ο πρωτότοκος Ελιάβ, ο δεύτερος Αβιναδάβ και ο τρίτος Σαμμά. Ο Δαβίδ ήταν ο νεότερος. 15 Ο Δαβίδ πήγαινε και υπηρετούσε το Σαούλ αλλά ξαναγύριζε στη Βηθλεέμ, για να βόσκει τα πρόβατα του πατέρα του. 16 Σαράντα μέρες ο Γολιάθ προχωρούσε πρωί και βράδυ προς τους Ισραηλίτες και στεκόταν αντίκρυ τους. 17 Μια μέρα ο Ιεσσαί είπε στο Δαβίδ, το γιο του: «Πάρε, για τους αδερφούς σου ένα εφά φρυγανισμένο στάρι κι αυτά τα δέκα καρβέλια ψωμί και τρέξε να τα πας στο στρατόπεδο, στους αδερφούς σου. 18 Κι αυτά τα δέκα κεφάλια φρέσκο τυρί πήγαινέ τα στο χιλίαρχο. Μάθε πώς είναι οι αδερφοί σου, και πάρε απ’ αυτούς κάποιο σημάδι, για να βεβαιωθώ πως είναι καλά. 19 Βρίσκονται μαζί με το Σαούλ και μ’ όλο τον ισραηλιτικό στρατό στην Κοιλάδα των Τερεβίνθων πολεμώντας τους Φιλισταίους».

20 Ο Δαβίδ σηκώθηκε νωρίς το πρωί, άφησε τα πρόβατα σ’ έναν φύλακα, πήρε τα πράγματα και πήγε όπως τον διέταξε ο Ιεσσαί. Έφτασε στο περιχαράκωμα, την ώρα που ο στρατός προχωρούσε να πάρει θέση για τη μάχη κραυγάζοντας την πολεμική κραυγή. 21 Οι Ισραηλίτες και οι Φιλισταίοι είχαν παραταχθεί για πόλεμο, ο ένας απέναντι στον άλλον. 22 Ο Δαβίδ άφησε στη φροντίδα του φύλακα των αποσκευών τα πράγματα που είχε φέρει, κι ο ίδιος έτρεξε στις γραμμές του στρατεύματος. Μόλις έφτασε εκεί, ρώτησε τους αδερφούς του για την υγεία τους. 23 Κι ενώ μιλούσε μαζί τους, βγήκε από τις γραμμές των Φιλισταίων ο μονομάχος πολεμιστής από τη Γαθ, ο Γολιάθ, κι άρχισε να ξαναλέει τα ίδια εκείνα λόγια.*Βλ. στ. 8-1. Και τον άκουσε ο Δαβίδ. 24 Οι Ισραηλίτες, όταν τον έβλεπαν έφευγαν από μπροστά του τρομαγμένοι 25 κι έλεγαν μεταξύ τους: «Βλέπετε αυτόν τον άντρα, που προχωράει κατά ’δω; Έρχεται πάλι για να προκαλέσει τους Ισραηλίτες. Όποιος μπορέσει να τον σκοτώσει, ο βασιλιάς θα τον γεμίσει πλούτη, θα του δώσει την κόρη του για γυναίκα και θ’ απαλλάξει το πατρικό του σπίτι από τους φόρους».

26 Τότε ο Δαβίδ, ρώτησε τους άντρες γύρω του: «Τι θα κάνουν σ’ εκείνον που θα σκοτώσει αυτόν το Φιλισταίο και θα ξεπλύνει την ντροπή απ’ τους Ισραηλίτες; Μα ποιος είναι λοιπόν, αυτός ο απερίτμητος, που ξευτελίζει έτσι τα στρατεύματα του αληθινού Θεού;» 27 Οι στρατιώτες τού είπαν πάλι ποια ήταν η αμοιβή για όποιον θα σκότωνε το Φιλισταίο. 28 Ο Ελιάβ, ο μεγαλύτερος αδερφός του, όταν άκουσε το Δαβίδ να μιλάει με τους στρατιώτες, οργίστηκε εναντίον του και του είπε: «Γιατί ήρθες εδώ; Σε ποιον τ’ άφησες τα λίγα εκείνα πρόβατα στην έρημο; Εγώ ξέρω την αλαζονεία σου και την κακία σου. Σίγουρα ήρθες για να δεις τη μάχη». 29 «Τι κακό έκανα λοιπόν;» είπε ο Δαβίδ. «Δεν μπορώ να ρωτήσω κάτι;» 30 Άφησε τον αδερφό του και στράφηκε σ’ έναν άλλο. Συνέχισε να ρωτάει το ίδιο πράγμα κι όλοι του έδιναν την ίδια απάντηση.

31 Τα λόγια που έλεγε ο Δαβίδ διαδόθηκαν κι έφτασαν μέχρι το Σαούλ, ο οποίος έστειλε να του τον φωνάξουν. 32 Ο Δαβίδ είπε στο Σαούλ: «Κανένας δεν πρέπει να χάνει το θάρρος του εξαιτίας αυτού του Φιλισταίου. Ο δούλος σου θα πάω και θ’ αναμετρηθώ μαζί του». 33 «Δε θα μπορέσεις να πας ν’ αναμετρηθείς μ’ αυτόν τον Φιλισταίο», του απάντησε ο Σαούλ, «γιατί εσύ είσαι παιδί κι εκείνος είναι άντρας και πολεμιστής από τα νιάτα του».

34 Τότε ο Δαβίδ του είπε: «Όταν ο δούλος σου έβοσκα τα πρόβατα του πατέρα μου κι ερχόταν κανένα λιοντάρι ή καμιά αρκούδα κι άρπαζε ένα πρόβατο από το κοπάδι, 35 τότε εγώ έτρεχα ξωπίσω τους και τα σκότωνα και γλίτωνα το πρόβατο από το στόμα τους. Κι όταν κάποτε ένα λιοντάρι χύμηξε πάνω μου, εγώ το άρπαξα από τη χαίτη του, το χτύπησα κάτω και το σκότωσα. 36 Λιοντάρια και αρκούδες έχω σκοτώσει ο δούλος σου. Ό,τι έπαθαν εκείνα, το ίδιο θα πάθει κι ετούτος εδώ ο απερίτμητος Φιλισταίος, γιατί πρόσβαλε τα στρατεύματα του αληθινού Θεού. 37 Ο Κύριος, που με γλίτωσε από τα νύχια του λιονταριού και της αρκούδας, αυτός θα με γλιτώσει κι από τα χέρια αυτού του Φιλισταίου».

Τότε ο Σαούλ είπε στο Δαβίδ: «Πήγαινε κι ας είναι ο Κύριος μαζί σου». 38 Του φόρεσε μάλιστα τη δική του την πανοπλία: του έβαλε στο κεφάλι τη χάλκινη περικεφαλαία και του φόρεσε το θώρακα. 39 Ο Δαβίδ ζώστηκε το ξίφος του Σαούλ πάνω από την πανοπλία του και προσπάθησε να περπατήσει, γιατί ποτέ δεν είχε ξαναδοκιμάσει. Τότε είπε στο Σαούλ: «Δεν μπορώ να περπατήσω μ’ αυτή την πανοπλία· δεν έχω συνηθίσει». Και την έβγαλε από πάνω του. 40 Μετά πήρε στο χέρι του το ραβδί του, διάλεξε πέντε λεία λιθάρια από το ποτάμι, τα έβαλε στο ποιμενικό σακούλι που είχε μαζί του, πήρε στο χέρι του τη σφεντόνα και πλησίασε το Φιλισταίο.

41 Ο Φιλισταίος άρχισε κι αυτός να πλησιάζει το Δαβίδ, ενώ ο άντρας που κρατούσε την ασπίδα του βάδιζε μπροστά από το μονομάχο. 42 Όταν ο Φιλισταίος κοίταξε και είδε το Δαβίδ, δεν του έδωσε καμιά σημασία, γιατί δεν είδε παρά ένα παιδί ξανθό, με ωραία εμφάνιση. 43 «Τι είμαι εγώ;» του είπε. «Σκυλί είμαι και ήρθες εναντίον μου με ραβδιά;» Και ζήτησε ο Φιλισταίος από τους θεούς του την κατάρα τους πάνω στο Δαβίδ. 44 «Έλα εδώ», του είπε μετά, «και θα δώσω τις σάρκες σου στα πουλιά του ουρανού και στ’ άγρια θηρία».

45 Ο Δαβίδ απάντησε στο Φιλισταίο: «Εσύ έρχεσαι εναντίον μου με ξίφος, ακόντιο και λόγχη· εγώ όμως έρχομαι εναντίον σου στο όνομα του παντοδύναμου Θεού, του Κυρίου των ισραηλιτικών στρατευμάτων, που εσύ τα ξευτέλισες. 46 Σήμερα ο Κύριος θα σε παραδώσει στα χέρια μου· θα σε σκοτώσω και θα σου κόψω το κεφάλι· σήμερα θα παραδώσω τα πτώματα των Φιλισταίων στρατιωτών στα πουλιά του ουρανού και στ’ άγρια θηρία. Έτσι όλοι οι άλλοι λαοί θα μάθουν ότι υπάρχει Θεός στον Ισραήλ. 47 Κι όλο αυτό το πλήθος των Ισραηλιτών θα μάθει πως ο Κύριος δεν έχει ανάγκη το ξίφος και το ακόντιο για να μας χαρίσει τη νίκη· ο πόλεμος είναι δική του υπόθεση κι αυτός θα σας παραδώσει στην εξουσία μας».

48 Μόλις ο Φιλισταίος ξεκίνησε και προχωρούσε προς το μέρος του Δαβίδ, ο Δαβίδ έτρεξε γρήγορα στο πεδίο της μάχης για να τον αντιμετωπίσει. 49 Άπλωσε το χέρι του στο σακούλι, πήρε ένα λιθάρι και το εκσφενδόνισε ενάντια στο Φιλισταίο. Το λιθάρι χώθηκε στο μέτωπό του κι εκείνος έπεσε με το πρόσωπο στη γη. 50 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ μ’ ένα λιθάρι και τη σφεντόνα του κατατρόπωσε το Φιλισταίο. Τον χτύπησε και τον σκότωσε, χωρίς να έχει ξίφος στα χέρια του. 51 Έπειτα ο Δαβίδ έτρεξε, στάθηκε πάνω στο Φιλισταίο, του τράβηξε το ξίφος από τη θήκη του και τον αποτέλειωσε, κόβοντάς του το κεφάλι.

Οι Φιλισταίοι, όταν είδαν ότι σκοτώθηκε ο ήρωάς τους, τράπηκαν σε φυγή. 52 Τότε οι στρατιώτες του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα σηκώθηκαν φωνάζοντας πολεμικές ιαχές και καταδίωξαν τους Φιλισταίους ως την είσοδο της Γαθ*της Γαθ, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «της κοιλάδας». κι ως τις πύλες της Εκρών. Όλος ο δρόμος, από τη Σααραείμ ως τη Γαθ και την Εκρών, στρώθηκε με τους τραυματίες των Φιλισταίων. 53 Όταν οι Ισραηλίτες γύρισαν από την καταδίωξη λεηλάτησαν κιόλας το εχθρικό στρατόπεδο. 54 Ο Δαβίδ πήρε το κεφάλι του Γολιάθ και το έφερε στην Ιερουσαλήμ· τα όπλα του πολεμιστή τα πήρε στη σκηνή του.

55 Όταν ο Σαούλ έβλεπε το Δαβίδ που πήγαινε να συναντήσει το Γολιάθ, ρώτησε τον Αβενήρ, τον αρχιστράτηγο: «Τίνος γιος είναι ο νέος αυτός, Αβενήρ;» Ο Αβενήρ του είχε απαντήσει τότε: «Μα τη ζωή σου, βασιλιά, δεν ξέρω». 56 Του είπε τότε ο βασιλιάς: «Ρώτησε εσύ τίνος γιος είναι ο νέος αυτός». 57 Έτσι, τώρα που ο Δαβίδ γύρισε από το φόνο του Γολιάθ, τον πήρε ο Αβενήρ και τον παρουσίασε στο Σαούλ, ενώ ο Δαβίδ κρατούσε ακόμη το κεφάλι του Γολιάθ στο χέρι του. 58 Ο Σαούλ τον ρώτησε: «Τίνος γιος είσ’ εσύ, νέε μου;» Ο Δαβίδ απάντησε: «Είμαι γιος του δούλου σου, του Ιεσσαί, του Βηθλεεμίτη».

4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.*17.5 armed: Heb. clothed 6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.*17.6 target: or, gorget 7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him. 8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. 9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul. 13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul. 15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Beth-lehem. 16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. 17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren; 18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.*17.18 cheeses: Heb. cheeses of milk*17.18 of…: Heb. of a thousand 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.*17.20 trench: or, place of the carriage*17.20 fight: or, battle array, or, place of fight 21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army. 22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.*17.22 his carriage: Heb. the vessels from upon him*17.22 saluted…: Heb. asked his brethren of peace 23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.*17.24 from…: Heb. from his face 25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel. 26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.*17.30 manner: Heb. word

31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.*17.31 sent…: Heb. took him

32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:*17.34 lamb: or, kid 35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.*17.38 armed David…: Heb. clothed David with his clothes 39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.*17.40 brook: or, valley*17.40 bag: Heb. vessel 41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.*17.46 deliver…: Heb. shut thee up 47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands.

48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. 52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is. 57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.
