1 Ο Σαούλ είχε ένα χρόνο που ήταν βασιλιάς· και αφού βασίλεψε δύο χρόνια στον Ισραήλ...*Ο στ. λείπει από τη μετάφρ. των Ο΄ και στο εβρ. είναι εφθαρμένος.2 διάλεξε από τους Ισραηλίτες τρεις χιλιάδες άντρες. Απ’ αυτούς οι δύο χιλιάδες έμειναν μαζί του στη Μιχμάς και στην ορεινή περιοχή της Βαιθήλ, ενώ οι υπόλοιποι χίλιοι πήγαν μαζί με το γιο του τον Ιωνάθαν στη Γιβεά στην περιοχή Βενιαμίν. Τους υπόλοιπους Ισραηλίτες τους έστειλε στα σπίτια τους.

3 Ο Ιωνάθαν σκότωσε τη φρουρά των Φιλισταίων στη Γιβεά, και το ’μαθαν αυτό οι Φιλισταίοι. Τότε ο Σαούλ έστειλε μήνυμα με σάλπιγγες σ’ όλη τη χώρα, λέγοντας: «Ας το μάθουν οι Εβραίοι». 4 Έτσι όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες έμαθαν ότι ο Σαούλ σκότωσε τη φρουρά των Φιλισταίων προκαλώντας μ’ αυτή την ενέργεια το μίσος τους εναντίον των Ισραηλιτών. Τότε συγκεντρώθηκε όλος ο στρατός στα Γάλγαλα υπό τις διαταγές του Σαούλ.

5 Μαζεύτηκαν και οι Φιλισταίοι για να πολεμήσουν τους Ισραηλίτες· ήταν τρεις χιλιάδες*τρεις χιλιάδες, σύμφωνα με αρχ. μετάφραση. Το εβρ. και οι Ο΄ έχουν «τριάντα χιλιάδες». άμαξες κι έξι χιλιάδες καβαλάρηδες και πεζοί αμέτρητοι, σαν την άμμο στην ακροθαλασσιά. Αυτοί στρατοπέδευσαν στη Μιχμάς, ανατολικά της Βαιθ-Αυέν. 6 Ο ισραηλιτικός πληθυσμός είδαν ότι βρίσκονταν σε δύσκολη θέση, γιατί πιέζονταν από παντού, και κρύφτηκαν στις σπηλιές, στις σχισμές των βράχων, σε λαγούμια και σε λάκκους. 7 Άλλοι πέρασαν τον Ιορδάνη, προς τις περιοχές Γαδ και Γαλαάδ.

Ο Σαούλ όμως ήταν ακόμη στα Γάλγαλα κι όλος ο στρατός τον ακολουθούσε τρομαγμένος. 8 Περίμενε εκεί εφτά μέρες, όσον χρόνο του είχε ορίσει ο Σαμουήλ, αλλά ο Σαμουήλ δεν ερχόταν στα Γάλγαλα κι ο στρατός άρχισε να εγκαταλείπει το Σαούλ και να σκορπίζεται. 9 Τότε ο Σαούλ διέταξε: «Φέρτε μου εδώ τα ζώα για το ολοκαύτωμα και τις θυσίες κοινωνίας!» Και πρόσφερε ο ίδιος το ολοκαύτωμα.*Η προσφορά αυτών των θυσιών ήταν πράξη ευλάβειας και μέρος της προετοιμασίας για τη μάχη (βλ. κεφ. 7:9).10 Όταν τελείωνε η προσφορά του ολοκαυτώματος ήρθε ο Σαμουήλ. Ο Σαούλ βγήκε να τον προϋπαντήσει και να τον καλωσορίσει. 11 Ο Σαμουήλ του είπε: «Τι έκανες;» Ο Σαούλ του απάντησε: «Όταν είδα ότι ο στρατός άρχισε να μ’ εγκαταλείπει και να διασκορπίζεται, κι ότι εσύ δεν ερχόσουν την ορισμένη μέρα και οι Φιλισταίοι συγκεντρώνονταν στη Μιχμάς, 12 σκέφτηκα: τώρα θα κατεβούν οι Φιλισταίοι να με πολεμήσουν στα Γάλγαλα, πριν προλάβω να ζητήσω την εύνοια του Κυρίου. Γι’ αυτό τόλμησα και πρόσφερα το ολοκαύτωμα». 13 Τότε ο Σαμουήλ του είπε: «Φέρθηκες ανόητα. Αν τηρούσες τις εντολές που σου έδωσε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου, τότε αυτός θα έκανε την οικογένειά σου να βασιλεύει για πάντα στον Ισραήλ. 14 Τώρα όμως η βασιλεία σου δε θα διατηρηθεί. Ο Κύριος γύρεψε να βρει έναν άνθρωπο όπως τον ήθελε και τον διόρισε άρχοντα στο λαό του,*Εννοείται ο βασιλιάς Δαβίδ, που η ιστορία του αρχίζει από το κεφ. 16 (πρβλ. Πραξ 13:22). γιατί εσύ δεν τήρησες αυτά που σε διέταξε».

15 Ο Σαμουήλ έφυγε από τα Γάλγαλα και πήγε στη Γιβεά στην περιοχή Βενιαμίν. Ο Σαούλ μέτρησε το στρατό που τον ακολουθούσε και ήταν περίπου εξακόσιοι άντρες.

16 Ο Σαούλ, ο γιος του ο Ιωνάθαν και ο στρατός που ήταν μαζί τους εγκαταστάθηκαν στη Γαβά στην περιοχή Βενιαμίν, ενώ οι Φιλισταίοι ήταν στρατοπεδευμένοι στη Μιχμάς. 17 Τότε ξεκίνησαν από το στρατόπεδο των Φιλισταίων καταδρομείς χωρισμένοι σε τρία τμήματα. Το πρώτο τμήμα πήρε το δρόμο της Οφρά, στην περιοχή της Σουάλ· 18 το άλλο, πήρε το δρόμο της Βαιθ-Χωρών και το τρίτο πήρε το δρόμο της περιοχής που εκτείνεται πάνω από την Κοιλάδα Σεβωίμ προς την έρημο.

19 Εκείνη την εποχή δεν βρισκόταν σιδηρουργός σ’ ολόκληρη τη χώρα του Ισραήλ, γιατί οι Φιλισταίοι δεν ήθελαν να έχουν τη δυνατότητα οι Εβραίοι να κατασκευάζουν ξίφη ή λόγχες. 20 (Όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες πήγαιναν στους Φιλισταίους για να τροχίσουν το υνία από τα αλέτρια τους, τις αξίνες τους, τα τσεκούρια τους και τα βούκεντρά τους. 21 Το ακόνισμα του υνίου στοίχιζε ένα μικρό κέρμα, του τσεκουριού και του βούκεντρου ένα τρίτο του σίκλου). 22 Γι’ αυτό την ημέρα της μάχης ο στρατός του Σαούλ και του Ιωνάθαν δεν είχαν ούτε ξίφη ούτε λόγχες. Μόνο ο Σαούλ κι ο Ιωνάθαν είχαν.

23 Η φρουρά των Φιλισταίων πήγε κι έπιασε το πέρασμα της Μιχμάς.

5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. 8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.*13.10 salute: Heb. bless

11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; 12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.*13.12 made…: Heb. intreated the face 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. 14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. 17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18 And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
