1 Ο Δαβίδ σκέφτηκε: «Κάποτε θα πέσω στα χέρια του Σαούλ· δεν είναι καλύτερα για μένα να φύγω και να πάω στη χώρα των Φιλισταίων; Έτσι αυτός θ’ απελπιστεί και θα πάψει πια να με καταδιώκει στο ισραηλιτικό έδαφος. Μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο θα γλιτώσω κι εγώ απ’ αυτόν». 2 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ και οι εξακόσιοι άντρες του σηκώθηκαν και πέρασαν στον Αχίς, γιο του Μαώχ και βασιλιά της Γαθ. 3 Ο Δαβίδ και οι άντρες του εγκαταστάθηκαν όλοι στη Γαθ κοντά στον Αχίς, καθένας με την οικογένειά του· ο Δαβίδ είχε μαζί του τις δύο γυναίκες του, την Αχινοάμ από την Ιζρεέλ και την Αβιγαία, που ήταν πριν γυναίκα του Ναβάλ, από την πόλη Κάρμηλο. 4 Όταν έφτασε η είδηση στο Σαούλ ότι ο Δαβίδ έφυγε στη Γαθ, σταμάτησε πια να τον καταδιώκει.

5 Μια μέρα ο Δαβίδ είπε στον Αχίς: «Αν με θεωρείς το δούλο σου άξιο της εμπιστοσύνης σου, ας μου δοθεί ένας τόπος να εγκατασταθώ σε μια από τις πόλεις της επαρχίας. Δεν υπάρχει λόγος να κατοικώ στην πρωτεύουσα του βασιλείου μαζί σου». 6 Έτσι, εκείνη την ημέρα ο Αχίς του παραχώρησε την πόλη Σικλάγ. Γι’ αυτό και η Σικλάγ ανήκει στους βασιλιάδες του Ιούδα μέχρι σήμερα. 7 Ο Δαβίδ έμεινε στη χώρα των Φιλισταίων ένα χρόνο και τέσσερις μήνες.

8 Στο μεταξύ, αυτός και οι άντρες του πήγαιναν κι έκαναν επιδρομές ενάντια στους Γεσουρίτες, στους Γεζερίτες και στους Αμαληκίτες, δηλαδή στους αρχικούς κατοίκους της περιοχής, προς την κατεύθυνση της Σουρ ως την Αίγυπτο. 9 Χτυπούσαν αυτές τις περιοχές και δεν άφηναν ζωντανούς ούτε άντρες ούτε γυναίκες· έπαιρναν πρόβατα, βόδια, γαϊδούρια, καμήλες και ρουχισμό και γύριζαν στον Αχίς.

10 Ο Αχίς τον ρωτούσε: «Πού επιτεθήκατε σήμερα;» Κι ο Δαβίδ απαντούσε: «Νότια της περιοχής Ιούδα» ή «νότια των Ιεραχμεελιτών» ή «νότια της περιοχής των Κεναίων». 11 Ο Δαβίδ δεν άφηνε κανέναν ζωντανό, ούτε άντρα ούτε γυναίκα, για να μην πάνε στη Γαθ και μιλήσουν εναντίον του για όσα τους έκανε. Αυτή ήταν η τακτική του όλο τον καιρό που έμεινε στη χώρα των Φιλισταίων. 12 Ο Αχίς, είχε εμπιστοσύνη στο Δαβίδ, γιατί σκεφτόταν ότι μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο ο Δαβίδ το δίχως άλλο γινόταν μισητός στον λαό του, τον Ισραήλ· έτσι θα του ήταν δούλος για πάντα.

5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee? 6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day. 7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.*27.7 the time: Heb. the number of days*27.7 a full year: Heb. a year of days

8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.*27.8 Gezrites: or, Gerzites 9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish. 10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day?
