1 Ο Δαβίδ έφυγε από κείνη την περιοχή και πήγε να μείνει στις σπηλιές της Εν-Γεδί.*Σε ορισμένες μετ. ο στίχος αριθμείται ως 23:29, οπότε οι στ. του κεφ. 24 αριθμούνται σ’ αυτές ως 24:1-22.

2 Όταν γύρισε ο Σαούλ από την καταδίωξη των Φιλισταίων, του έφεραν την είδηση: «Ο Δαβίδ βρίσκεται στην έρημο της Εν-Γεδί». 3 Τότε αυτός πήρε απ’ όλους τους Ισραηλίτες τρεις χιλιάδες επίλεκτους άντρες και πήγε να ψάξει για το Δαβίδ και τους άντρες του κοντά στους Βράχους των Αγριοκάτσικων.

4 Όταν έφτασε στα μαντριά των προβάτων, κοντά στο δρόμο, μπήκε σε μια σπηλιά για την φυσική του ανάγκη. Αλλά ο Δαβίδ και οι άντρες του είχαν τρυπώσει στο εσωτερικό της σπηλιάς.

5 Τότε οι άντρες του Δαβίδ του είπαν: «Σήμερα είναι η μέρα, για την οποία ο Κύριος σου είπε: Θα σου παραδώσω τον εχθρό σου και θα του φερθείς όπως νομίζεις». Ο Δαβίδ σηκώθηκε κι έκοψε κρυφά την άκρη από το μανδύα του Σαούλ. 6 Αλλά αμέσως μετά τον έλεγξε η συνείδησή του γι’ αυτό που έκανε. 7 «Ο Κύριος να με τιμωρήσει», είπε στους άντρες του, «αν κάνω στον εκλεκτό του Κυρίου αυτά που μου λέτε και ν’ απλώσω χέρι πάνω του· είναι ο εκλεκτός του Κυρίου». 8 Έτσι, μ’ αυτά τα λόγια απέτρεψε τους ανθρώπους του και δεν τους άφησε να επιτεθούν στο Σαούλ.

Σε λίγο ο Σαούλ έφυγε από τη σπηλιά και συνέχισε το δρόμο του. 9 Ο Δαβίδ σηκώθηκε, βγήκε από τη σπηλιά και φώναξε πίσω από το Σαούλ: «Κύριέ μου, βασιλιά!» Ο Σαούλ γύρισε πίσω του να δει κι ο Δαβίδ γονάτισε με το πρόσωπο στη γη και τον προσκύνησε. 10 «Γιατί ακούς αυτούς που σου λένε ότι ο Δαβίδ ζητάει το κακό σου;» του φώναξε. 11 «Να, σήμερα είδες με τα μάτια σου ότι ο Κύριος σε παρέδωσε στα χέρια μου μέσα στη σπηλιά! Μερικοί μού είπαν να σε σκοτώσω, αλλά εγώ σε λυπήθηκα και τους είπα ότι δεν πρόκειται ν’ απλώσω το χέρι μου πάνω στον κύριό μου, γιατί αυτός είναι ο εκλεκτός του Κυρίου. 12 Κοίτα, πατέρα μου, κοίτα την άκρη του μανδύα σου που την κρατώ στο χέρι μου. Έκοψα την άκρη από το μανδύα σου, εσένα όμως δεν σε σκότωσα. Βλέπεις, λοιπόν, ότι δεν έχω πρόθεση ούτε να σε βλάψω, ούτε να επαναστατήσω εναντίον σου. Βλέπεις ότι δεν αμάρτησα εναντίον σου, ενώ εσύ ζητάς ευκαιρία για να μου στερήσεις τη ζωή. 13 Ο Κύριος ας κρίνει τη διαφορά μας κι ο Κύριος ας πάρει εκδίκηση για λογαριασμό μου. Εγώ όμως ποτέ δε θα στραφώ εναντίον σου. 14 Μια παλιά παροιμία λέει:

Απ’ τους κακούς μόνο κακία βγαίνει

μα εγώ δε θα στραφώ εναντίον σου.

15 Ποιον βγαίνεις να κυνηγήσεις, βασιλιά του Ισραήλ; Ποιον καταδιώκεις; Ένα ψόφιο σκυλί, έναν ψύλλο! 16 Ο Κύριος ας έρθει κριτής κι ας κρίνει ανάμεσα σ’ εμάς τους δυο. Ας εξετάσει κι ας δικαιώσει την υπόθεσή μου και ας με γλιτώσει από την καταδίωξή σου».

17 Όταν ο Δαβίδ τέλειωσε μ’ αυτά που έλεγε στο Σαούλ, εκείνος ρώτησε: «Η φωνή σου είν’ αυτή, γιε μου Δαβίδ;» Και ξέσπασε σε δυνατό κλάμα. 18 «Εσύ είσαι δικαιότερος από μένα», του είπε μετά. «Εσύ μου έκανες καλό, ενώ εγώ σου ανταπέδωσα κακό. 19 Σήμερα μου απέδειξες την καλοσύνη σου, γιατί ενώ ο Κύριος με παρέδωσε στα χέρια σου, εσύ δεν με σκότωσες. 20 Ποιος αφήνει τον εχθρό του, όταν τον βρει μπροστά του, να συνεχίσει το δρόμο του ανενόχλητος; Ο Κύριος να σου ανταποδώσει το καλό που μου έκανες σήμερα. 21 Ξέρω καλά ότι οπωσδήποτε εσύ θα βασιλέψεις κι ότι στα χέρια σου το βασίλειο του Ισραήλ θα είναι ακλόνητο. 22 Τώρα, λοιπόν, ορκίσου μου στον Κύριο ότι δε θα εξαφανίσεις τη μνήμη μου και τη μνήμη της οικογένειας του πατέρα μου σκοτώνοντας τους απογόνους μου».

23 Ο Δαβίδ έδωσε όρκο στο Σαούλ. Μετά ο Σαούλ γύρισε στο σπίτι του, ενώ ο Δαβίδ και οι άντρες του ανέβηκαν στη σπηλιά.

1 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.*24.1 following: Heb. after 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. 3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave. 4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.*24.4 Saul’s…: Heb. the robe which was Saul’s 5 And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt. 6 And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD. 7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.*24.7 stayed: Heb. cut off 8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? 10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’s anointed. 11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. 12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. 15 The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.*24.15 deliver: Heb. judge

16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. 17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. 18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.*24.18 delivered: Heb. shut up 19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day. 20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand. 21 Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house. 22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
