1 Οι Ζιφίτες ήρθαν στο Σαούλ, στη Γιβεά, και του είπαν: «Ξέρεις ότι ο Δαβίδ κρύβεται στο λόφο Χαχιλά, απέναντι στη στέπα;» 2 Ο Σαούλ τότε σηκώθηκε και κατέβηκε στην έρημο Ζιφ με τρεις χιλιάδες επίλεκτους Ισραηλίτες, για να ψάξει για το Δαβίδ. 3 Στρατοπέδευσε στο λόφο Χαχιλά, κοντά στο δρόμο. Όταν ο Δαβίδ, που έμενε στην έρημο, άκουσε πως ο Σαούλ τον αναζητούσε εκεί, 4 έστειλε κατασκόπους να πάρουν σίγουρες πληροφορίες κι έμαθε ότι ο Σαούλ πράγματι είχε φτάσει εκεί. 5 Τότε σηκώθηκε κι ήρθε στην τοποθεσία όπου είχε στρατοπεδεύσει ο Σαούλ. Είδε και τον τόπο όπου κοιμόταν ο Σαούλ κι ο Αβενήρ, γιος του Νηρ, ο αρχιστράτηγός του. Ο Σαούλ κοιμόταν στη μέση του στρατοπέδου, ενώ οι στρατιώτες είχαν κατασκηνώσει γύρω του.

6 Τότε κάλεσε τον Αχιμέλεχ το Χετταίο και τον Αβισάι, γιο της Σερουΐας κι αδερφό του Ιωάβ. «Ποιος θα κατέβει μαζί μου», τους είπε, «στο στρατόπεδο του Σαούλ;» Ο Αβισάι απάντησε: «Κατεβαίνω εγώ μαζί σου». 7 Έτσι ήρθαν ο Δαβίδ και ο Αβισάι στο στρατόπεδο τη νύχτα, και είδαν το Σαούλ που κοιμόταν στο κέντρο του στρατοπέδου, με το ακόντιό του μπηγμένο στο έδαφος, πλάι στο κεφάλι του. Ο Αβενήρ και οι άλλοι στρατιώτες κοιμόνταν γύρω του. 8 Τότε είπε ο Αβισάι στο Δαβίδ: «Απόψε ο Θεός παρέδωσε τον εχθρό σου στα χέρια σου. Άσε με τώρα να τον καρφώσω στη γη με το ακόντιο μ’ ένα χτύπημα. Δεν θα χρειαστεί να τον χτυπήσω δεύτερη φορά».

9 Αλλά ο Δαβίδ του είπε: «Μην τον σκοτώσεις· γιατί ποιος θ’ απλώσει χέρι εναντίον του εκλεκτού του Κυρίου και θα μείνει ατιμώρητος; 10 Σε βεβαιώνω στο όνομα του αληθινού Θεού πως ο Κύριος ο ίδιος θα θέσει τέρμα στη ζωή του Σαούλ, είτε πεθάνει από φυσικό θάνατο, είτε σκοτωθεί στο πεδίο της μάχης. 11 Ο Κύριος να με φυλάξει να μην απλώσω το χέρι μου εναντίον του εκλεκτού του! Τώρα, λοιπόν, πάρε το ακόντιο, που είναι κοντά στο κεφάλι του και το δοχείο με το νερό και πάμε να φύγουμε». 12 Έτσι πήρε ο Δαβίδ το ακόντιο και το δοχείο με το νερό, που ήταν κοντά στο κεφάλι του Σαούλ, και έφυγαν. Κανένας δεν είδε και κανένας δεν κατάλαβε τίποτα, ούτε ξύπνησε κανείς. Όλοι τους κοιμόνταν, γιατί ο Κύριος τους είχε κάνει να πέσουν σε ύπνο βαθύ.

13 Ο Δαβίδ πέρασε από την άλλη μεριά της κοιλάδας και στάθηκε στην κορυφή του βουνού, σε μεγάλη απόσταση από το στρατόπεδο του Σαούλ. 14 Τότε φώναξε στο στρατό και στον Αβενήρ, γιο του Νηρ: «Δεν απαντάς, Αβενήρ;» Κι ο Αβενήρ απάντησε: «Ποιος είσ’ εσύ που φωνάζεις στο βασιλιά;» 15 Ο Δαβίδ του λέει: «Δεν είσαι άντρας εσύ; Μα δεν υπάρχει καλύτερος στρατιώτης από σένα στον Ισραήλ! Γιατί, λοιπόν, δε φύλαξες τον κύριό σου, το βασιλιά; Κάποιος ήρθε να τον σκοτώσει. 16 Δεν ήταν σωστό αυτό που έκανες. Ορκίζομαι στον αληθινό Θεό ότι θα πεθάνετε όλοι σας, γιατί δε φυλάξατε τον κύριό σας, τον εκλεκτό του Κυρίου. Και τώρα ψάξε να βρεις πού είναι το ακόντιο του βασιλιά και το δοχείο με το νερό, που ήταν πλάι στο κεφάλι του!»

17 Ο Σαούλ αναγνώρισε τη φωνή του Δαβίδ και φώναξε: «Η φωνή σου είν’ αυτή, γιε μου, Δαβίδ;» Ο Δαβίδ απάντησε: «Η φωνή μου είναι, κύριέ μου, βασιλιά. 18 Γιατί, κύριέ μου, καταδιώκεις εμένα το δούλο σου;» του λέει. «Τι έκανα; τι κακό σκέφτηκα; 19 Τώρα, λοιπόν, άκουσε σε παρακαλώ το δούλο σου, κύριέ μου βασιλιά: Αν ο Κύριος σε παρακίνησε εναντίον μου, ας τον εξευμενίσουμε με μια θυσία. Αν όμως σε παρακινούν άνθρωποι, ας είναι καταραμένοι ενώπιον του Κυρίου, γιατί με καταδιώκουν σήμερα, και δε μ’ αφήνουν να ζήσω ήσυχος στη χώρα που έδωσε ο Κύριος στο λαό του για ιδιοκτησία τους. Είναι σαν να με στέλνουν αλλού να λατρέψω άλλους θεούς. 20 Αλλά ας μη χυθεί το αίμα μου σε ξένη γη, μακριά από την παρουσία του Κυρίου, αφού ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ βγήκε ζητώντας να με σκοτώσει, όπως κυνηγάνε τις πέρδικες στα βουνά».*Κυνηγώντας το Δαβίδ έξω από τη χώρα του Ισραήλ, τον καταδίκαζαν να μην μπορεί πια να λατρέψει κανονικά τον Κύριο, οπότε θα υποχρεωνόταν να λατρέψει «άλλους θεούς».

21 Ο Σαούλ απάντησε: «Αμάρτησα! Γύρνα πίσω, γιε μου, Δαβίδ! Δε θα σου κάνω πια κακό, αφού σεβάστηκες σήμερα τη ζωή μου. Φέρθηκα ανόητα και πλανήθηκα φοβερά».

22 Ο Δαβίδ απάντησε: «Εδώ είναι το ακόντιό σου, βασιλιά. Ας περάσει ένας από τους άντρες σου να το πάρει. 23 Κι ο Κύριος ας ανταμείψει του καθενός μας τη δικαιοσύνη και την πιστότητα. Σήμερα σε παρέδωσε ο Κύριος στα χέρια μου, αλλά εγώ δεν θέλησα ν’ απλώσω το χέρι μου στον εκλεκτό του. 24 Κι όπως εγώ σεβάστηκα σήμερα τη ζωή σου, έτσι ας σεβαστεί κι ο Κύριος τη δική μου ζωή κι ας με ελευθερώσει από όλα αυτά τα δεινά». 25 Τότε ο Σαούλ είπε στο Δαβίδ: «Ευλογημένος να είσαι, γιε μου, Δαβίδ! Εσύ το δίχως άλλο θα κατορθώσεις μεγάλα πράγματα και τελικά θα επικρατήσεις».

Ο Δαβίδ εξακολούθησε το δρόμο του, ενώ ο Σαούλ γύρισε στο σπίτι του.

1 And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon? 2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. 4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed.

5 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.*26.5 trench: or, midst of his carriages

6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee. 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him. 8 Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.*26.8 delivered: Heb. shut up 9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’s anointed, and be guiltless? 10 David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish. 11 The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’s anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go. 12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.

13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them: 14 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king? 15 And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord. 16 This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.*26.16 worthy to die: Heb. the sons of death 17 And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king. 18 And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand? 19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.*26.19 accept: Heb. smell*26.19 abiding: Heb. cleaving 20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. 22 And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it. 23 The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’s anointed. 24 And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation. 25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
