1 Τότε πήρε ο Σαμουήλ το δοχείο με το λάδι και το έχυσε πάνω στο κεφάλι του Σαούλ, τον φίλησε και του είπε: «Ο Κύριος σε έχρισε άρχοντα στο λαό του που του ανήκει. 2 Σήμερα όταν θα φύγεις από ’δω, θα βρεις στη Σελσά, δυο ανθρώπους κοντά στον τάφο της Ραχήλ, στα σύνορα της φυλής Βενιαμίν, δυο ανθρώπους, οι οποίοι θα σου πουν ότι βρέθηκαν τα γαϊδούρια που έψαχνες, και τώρα ο πατέρας σου έπαψε να νοιάζεται γι’ αυτά κι ανησυχεί για σας. "Τι να κάνω", λέει, "για να βρω το γιο μου;" 3 Εσύ θα προχωρήσεις πέρα από ’κει, ωσότου φτάσεις στη Βελανιδιά του Θαβώρ. Εκεί θα σε βρουν τρεις άντρες, που θ’ ανεβαίνουν στο ιερό της Βαιθήλ και θα ’χουν μαζί τους για να προσφέρουν ο ένας τρία κατσίκια, ο άλλος τρία καρβέλια ψωμί και ο άλλος ένα ασκί κρασί. 4 Θα σε χαιρετήσουν και θα σου δώσουν δύο καρβέλια ψωμί. Θα τα δεχτείς απ’ αυτούς 5 και θα έρθεις στο λόφο του Θεού, στη Γιβεά, όπου υπάρχει φρουρά των Φιλισταίων. Μόλις μπεις στην πόλη, θα συναντήσεις μια ομάδα προφητών, που θα κατεβαίνουν από τον ιερό τόπο, παίζοντας άρπα, τύμπανο, φλογέρα και κιθάρα, και θα προφητεύουν. 6 Τότε θα έρθει το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου πάνω σου και θα προφητεύεις κι εσύ μαζί τους και θα γίνεις άλλος άνθρωπος. 7 Κι όταν αυτά τα σημεία σού συμβούν, τότε μπορείς να δράσεις, γιατί ο Θεός θα είναι μαζί σου. 8 Θα κατεβείς στα Γάλγαλα πριν από μένα, κι εγώ θα έρθω να σε συναντήσω, για να προσφέρω ολοκαυτώματα και θυσίες κοινωνίας. Περίμενέ με εκεί εφτά μέρες, ώσπου να ’ρθώ και τότε θα σου πω τι πρέπει να κάνεις».

9 Μόλις ο Σαούλ γύρισε να φύγει από το Σαμουήλ, ο Θεός τον έκανε καινούριο άνθρωπο, και όλα εκείνα τα σημεία πραγματοποιήθηκαν την ίδια μέρα. 10 Όταν έφτασε με το δούλο του στη Γιβεά τους συνάντησε η ομάδα των προφητών· τότε κατέβηκε σ’ αυτόν το Πνεύμα του Θεού και προφήτευε κι αυτός μαζί τους. 11 Εκείνοι που τον γνώριζαν από πρωτύτερα, όταν τον είδαν να προφητεύει μαζί με τους προφήτες, έλεγαν μεταξύ τους: «Τι συνέβη στο γιο του Κις; Κι ο Σαούλ ανάμεσα στους προφήτες;» 12 Ένας απ’ αυτούς είπε: «Και ποιος είναι ο πατέρας τους;»*Το νόημα της ερώτησης δεν είναι απόλυτα σαφές. Πιθανόν δηλώνει έκπληξη που δεν έβλεπαν κανέναν επικεφαλής της ομάδας των προφητών· πιθανόν πάλι οι προφήτες αυτοί να ήταν κατώτερης κοινωνικής τάξης και δεν ήταν γνωστός ο «πατέρας τους». Από ’κει βγήκε και η παροιμία: «Κι ο Σαούλ ανάμεσα στους προφήτες;»

13 Όταν τέλειωσε ο Σαούλ να προφητεύει, ήρθε στον ιερό τόπο. 14 Ο θείος του Σαούλ τον ρώτησε: «Πού πήγατε με τον υπηρέτη σου;» Κι ο Σαούλ απάντησε: «Πήγαμε να βρούμε τα γαϊδούρια κι επειδή δεν τα βρήκαμε, πήγαμε στο Σαμουήλ». 15 Ο θείος του τον ρώτησε: «Πες μου, λοιπόν, τι σας είπε ο Σαμουήλ;» 16 Ο Σαούλ απάντησε: «Μας βεβαίωσε πως τα γαϊδούρια είχαν βρεθεί». Αλλά δε φανέρωσε τίποτε απ’ όσα του είπε ο Σαμουήλ σχετικά με τη βασιλεία.

17 Ο Σαμουήλ συγκέντρωσε το λαό ενώπιον του Κυρίου στη Μισπά, 18 και είπε στους Ισραηλίτες: «Να τι λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ: "εγώ σας έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο και σας ελευθέρωσα από την εξουσία των Αιγυπτίων κι από όλους τους βασιλιάδες που σας καταπίεζαν. 19 Αλλά σήμερα εσείς περιφρονήσατε το Θεό σας, εκείνον που σας απάλλαξε απ’ όλα τα δεινά και τις θλίψεις σας, και μου ζητήσατε να σας δώσω βασιλιά. Τώρα λοιπόν, παραταχθείτε ενώπιον του Κυρίου κατά φυλές και κατά συγγένειες"».

20 Ο Σαμουήλ διέταξε να πλησιάσουν όλες οι φυλές των Ισραηλιτών, έριξαν κλήρο κι ο κλήρος έπεσε στη φυλή Βενιαμίν. 21 Μετά διέταξε να πλησιάσει η φυλή Βενιαμίν κατά οικογένειες κι ο κλήρος έπεσε στην οικογένεια του Ματρεί· έπειτα ο κλήρος έπεσε στο Σαούλ, γιο του Κις. Αλλά όταν τον αναζήτησαν, δεν τον βρήκαν πουθενά.

22 Τότε ρώτησαν πάλι τον Κύριο: «Ήρθε εδώ αυτός ο άνθρωπος;» Ο Κύριος αποκρίθηκε: «Είναι κρυμμένος ανάμεσα στις αποσκευές». 23 Έτρεξαν, λοιπόν, και τον έφεραν από ’κει και στάθηκε ανάμεσα στο λαό· ήταν ένα κεφάλι ψηλότερος απ’ όλους.

24 Είπε τότε ο Σαμουήλ στο λαό: «Κοιτάξτε αυτόν που διάλεξε ο Κύριος. Πραγματικά δεν υπάρχει άλλος σαν κι αυτόν μέσα σ’ όλον το λαό». 25 Μετά ο Σαμουήλ τους ανακοίνωσε το βασιλικό δίκαιο και το έγραψε σε βιβλίο, το οποίο το τοποθέτησε μέσα στο αγιαστήριο. Έπειτα απέλυσε το λαό κι έφυγαν καθένας για το σπίτι του.

26 Έφυγε κι ο Σαούλ και πήγε στο σπίτι του στην Γιβεά, και τον συνόδεψαν μερικοί τίμιοι και γενναίοι άντρες, που ο Θεός είχε αγγίξει την καρδιά τους. 27 Υπήρχαν όμως και μερικοί τιποτένιοι που έλεγαν: «Πώς θα μας ελευθερώσει αυτός;» Και τον περιφρονούσαν και δεν του πρόσφεραν δώρα.

14 And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel. 15 And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you. 16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

17 And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh; 18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you: 19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands. 20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken. 21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. 23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.*10.24 God…: Heb. Let the king live 25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched. 27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.*10.27 held…: or, was as though he had been deaf
