1 Ο Δαβίδ έφυγε από τη Ναϊώθ της Ραμά και πήγε και βρήκε τον Ιωνάθαν. «Τι έχω κάνει;» του είπε. «Ποια είναι η αδικία μου ή ποια η αμαρτία μου ενάντια στον πατέρα σου, και γυρεύει να με σκοτώσει;» 2 Ο Ιωνάθαν του απάντησε: «Όχι, δε θα σε σκοτώσει. Ο πατέρας μου δεν κάνει τίποτα χωρίς πρωτύτερα να μου το πει –ακόμα και την πιο ασήμαντη μικροδουλειά. Γιατί θα μου ’κρυβε κάτι τέτοιο; Δεν είναι δυνατό».

3 «Ξέρει καλά ο πατέρας σου», του λέει*λέει, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «ορκίστηκε». ο Δαβίδ, «ότι έχω κερδίσει τη συμπάθειά σου, και θα σκέφτηκε να μη μάθεις εσύ τίποτε για να μη στενοχωρηθείς. Αλλά σε βεβαιώνω, μα τη ζωή του Κυρίου και μα τη ζωή σου, ότι ένα βήμα με χωρίζει από το θάνατο».

4 Ο Ιωνάθαν του είπε: «Εγώ ό,τι θέλεις θα το κάνω για χάρη σου». 5 Κι ο Δαβίδ απάντησε: «Λοιπόν, αύριο είναι νουμηνία κι εγώ κανονικά θα πρέπει να συμμετάσχω στο βασιλικό τραπέζι. Άφησέ με όμως να φύγω και να κρυφτώ στους αγρούς ως το βράδυ της τρίτης μέρας. 6 Αν ο πατέρας σου με αναζητήσει, θα του πεις: "ο Δαβίδ με παρακάλεσε θερμά να πάει εσπευσμένα στην πατρίδα του τη Βηθλεέμ, γιατί ολόκληρη η οικογένειά του προσφέρει ετήσια θυσία εκεί". 7 Αν ο βασιλιάς πει: "καλά", τότε ο δούλος σου δε διατρέχω κανέναν κίνδυνο. Αν όμως οργιστεί, τότε να ξέρεις ότι είναι αποφασισμένος να το κάνει το κακό. 8 Κάνε μου αυτήν τη χάρη, σε παρακαλώ, αφού έχουμε συνδεθεί με συμφωνία φιλίας στ’ όνομα του Κυρίου. Αν όμως σε κάτι αμάρτησα, σκότωσέ με εσύ καλύτερα, παρά να με παραδώσεις στον πατέρα σου». 9 Ο Ιωνάθαν απάντησε: «Ποτέ δε θα σου συμβεί κάτι τέτοιο! Εγώ, αν μάθω ότι ο πατέρας μου αποφάσισε πραγματικά να σου κάνει κακό, σε βεβαιώνω ότι θα σου το πω». 10 «Και ποιος θα μ’ ενημερώσει εμένα, αν ο πατέρας σου σού απαντήσει με σκληρότητα;» ρώτησε ο Δαβίδ.

11 Ο Ιωνάθαν του είπε: «Έλα, πάμε έξω». Και βγήκαν οι δυό τους έξω στα χωράφια. 12 «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ ας είναι μάρτυρας»,*ας είναι μάρτυρας, κατά τους Ο΄ (οίδεν). Στο εβρ. η φρ. λείπει. είπε ο Ιωνάθαν, «πως αύριο τέτοια ώρα ή μεθαύριο θα βολιδοσκοπήσω τον πατέρα μου. Αν δω ότι σκέφτεται καλά για σένα, εγώ θα σου στείλω ανθρώπους και θα σου το φανερώσω. 13 Ο Κύριος να με τιμωρήσει, αν ο πατέρας μου θελήσει να σου κάνει κακό, κι εγώ δεν σου το φανερώσω και δεν σ’ αφήσω να φύγεις ασφαλής. Ο Κύριος να είναι μαζί σου όπως ήταν κάποτε και με τον πατέρα μου. 14 Όσο ακόμα ζω, θέλω να μου δείχνεις την αγάπη του Κυρίου. Αλλά και μετά το θάνατό μου 15 μη σταματήσεις ποτέ να δείχνεις την αγάπη σου στους απογόνους μου, ακόμη κι όταν ο Κύριος θα έχει εξαφανίσει όλους τους εχθρούς σου πάνω απ’ τη γη». 16 (Ο Ιωνάθαν είχε συνάψει συμφωνία φιλίας με την οικογένεια του Δαβίδ λέγοντας: «Ο Κύριος να εκδικηθεί τους εχθρούς του Δαβίδ»).*Στο εβρ. οι στ. 15-16 είναι ασαφείς.17 Ο Ιωνάθαν ζήτησε ακόμη μια φορά από το Δαβίδ να του ορκιστεί στο όνομα της αγάπης του γι’ αυτόν, γιατί ο Ιωνάθαν αγαπούσε το Δαβίδ σαν τον εαυτό του.

18 Ο Ιωνάθαν επανέλαβε: «Αύριο, λοιπόν, είναι νουμηνία και θα σε αναζητήσουν, γιατί η θέση σου θα είναι κενή. 19 Την τρίτη μέρα θ’ αρχίσουν να σε αναζητούν με μεγαλύτερη επιμονή. Τότε θα πας στον τόπο όπου είχες κρυφτεί την προηγούμενη φορά, και θα καθίσεις κοντά στο Βράχο Εζήλ. 20 Εγώ θα ρίξω τρία βέλη προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση, σαν να είχα βάλει εκεί ένα στόχο. 21 Μετά θα στείλω τον υπηρέτη μου να πάει να βρει τα βέλη. Αν του φωνάξω: "τα βέλη δεν είναι τόσο μακριά, έλα να τα μαζέψεις", τότε θα μπορείς να ’ρθεις, γιατί δε θα κινδυνεύεις. Το ορκίζομαι στον αληθινό Θεό πως δε θα υπάρχει λόγος ανησυχίας. 22 Αν όμως φωνάξω στον υπηρέτη: "τα βέλη είναι ακόμα πιο μακριά", τότε φεύγα, γιατί ο Κύριος σε στέλνει μακριά. 23 Για ό,τι είπαμε εγώ κι εσύ, ο Κύριος ας είναι μάρτυρας ανάμεσά μας για πάντα».

24 Έτσι ο Δαβίδ πήγε και κρύφτηκε στα χωράφια. Την πρωτομηνιά, κάθισε ο βασιλιάς στο τραπέζι για να φάει. 25 Κάθισε, όπως συνήθιζε, στο κάθισμά του, κοντά στον τοίχο. Ο Ιωνάθαν κάθισε απέναντί του κι ο Αβενήρ πλάι στο Σαούλ, ενώ η θέση του Δαβίδ ήταν άδεια. 26 Ο Σαούλ δεν είπε τίποτα εκείνη την ημέρα, γιατί σκέφτηκε πως κάτι θα του συνέβη και δε θα πρόλαβε να εξαγνιστεί.*Ένας θρησκευτικά ακάθαρτος δεν επιτρεπόταν να λάβει μέρος στο γεύμα που επακολουθούσε μετά τις θυσίες (Βλ. Λευ 7:21).

27 Την επόμενη μέρα της πρωτομηνιάς η θέση του Δαβίδ ήταν πάλι άδεια. Τότε είπε ο Σαούλ στο γιο του τον Ιωνάθαν: «Γιατί ο γιος του Ιεσσαί δεν ήρθε στο γεύμα ούτε χτες, ούτε σήμερα;» 28,29 Ο Ιωνάθαν του απάντησε: «Ο Δαβίδ με παρακάλεσε θερμά να τον αφήσω να πάει στη Βηθλεέμ, γιατί η οικογένειά του κάνει θυσία στην πόλη, και του παράγγειλε ο αδερφός του να πάει. "Αν έχω την εύνοιά σου", μου είπε, "επίτρεψέ μου να πάω να δω τ’ αδέρφια μου". Γι’ αυτό δεν ήρθε στο τραπέζι του βασιλιά».

30 Τότε οργίστηκε ο Σαούλ εναντίον του Ιωνάθαν και του είπε: «Γιε διεφθαρμένης κόρης! Το ’ξερα εγώ πως συνδέεσαι με το γιο του Ιεσσαί, ρεζιλεύοντας έτσι τον εαυτό σου και τη μάνα που σε γέννησε. 31 Όσο ζει ο γιος του Ιεσσαί πάνω στη γη, δε θα υπάρχει καμιά ελπίδα για σένα ν’ αναλάβεις τη βασιλεία. Τώρα, λοιπόν, στείλε να τον συλλάβουν και να μου τον φέρουν εδώ· πρέπει να πεθάνει».

32 Ο Ιωνάθαν απάντησε στον πατέρα του: «Γιατί να πεθάνει; Τι έκανε;» 33 Τότε ο Σαούλ έριξε το ακόντιο εναντίον του για να τον σκοτώσει. Και κατάλαβε ο Ιωνάθαν ότι ο πατέρας του το ’χε αποφασίσει να σκοτώσει το Δαβίδ. 34 Σηκώθηκε, λοιπόν, από το τραπέζι πολύ οργισμένος, και δεν έφαγε τίποτα τη δεύτερη μέρα του μήνα. Ήταν πολύ λυπημένος για το Δαβίδ και γιατί ο πατέρας του τον είχε προσβάλει.

35 Την άλλη μέρα βγήκε ο Ιωνάθαν στα χωράφια, όπως είχε συμφωνήσει με το Δαβίδ, και είχε μαζί του έναν νεαρό υπηρέτη. 36 «Τρέχα», του είπε, «να μαζεύεις τα βέλη που θα ρίχνω». Ο νέος έτρεξε, και ο Ιωνάθαν έριξε το βέλος πέρα από αυτόν. 37 Όταν ο νέος έτρεξε στον τόπο όπου είχε ρίξει ο Ιωνάθαν το βέλος, αυτός του φώναξε: «Το βέλος είναι ακόμα πιο πέρα από ’κει που βρίσκεσαι!» 38 Και συνέχεια του φώναζε: «Τρέξε, κάνε γρήγορα, μη στέκεσαι». Ο υπηρέτης μάζεψε τα βέλη του Ιωνάθαν και τα έφερε στον κύριό του. 39 Ο νέος δεν ήξερε τίποτα. Μόνο ο Ιωνάθαν κι ο Δαβίδ ήξεραν την υπόθεση.

40 Μετά ο Ιωνάθαν έδωσε τα πράγματά του στον υπηρέτη του. «Τρέξε», του είπε, «και πήγαινέ τα στην πόλη». 41 Μόλις έφυγε ο υπηρέτης, σηκώθηκε ο Δαβίδ πίσω από το βράχο κι έπεσε με το πρόσωπο στη γη και προσκύνησε τρεις φορές. Φίλησε ο ένας τον άλλον κι έκλαιγαν κι οι δυο τους γοερά. 42 Έπειτα είπε ο Ιωνάθαν στο Δαβίδ: «Άντε, πήγαινε στο καλό· και να θυμάσαι τον όρκο φιλίας που έχουμε δώσει ο ένας στον άλλο, στ’ όνομα του Κυρίου· είναι δεσμευτικός και για τους απογόνους μας για πάντα. Ο Κύριος είναι μάρτυράς μας».

9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee? 10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?

11 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. 24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat. 25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty. 26 Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean. 27 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day? 28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beth-lehem: 29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table. 30 Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?*20.30 Thou…: or, Thou perverse rebel: Heb. 35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him. 36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. 41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever.
