1 Τότε είπε ο Σαμουήλ σ’ όλους τους Ισραηλίτες: «Βλέπετε, έκανα όλα όσα μου ζητήσατε και σας έδωσα βασιλιά. 2 Από ’δω κι εμπρός ο βασιλιάς θα είναι αρχηγός σας. Εγώ ήμουν αρχηγός σας από τα νιάτα μου μέχρι σήμερα. Τώρα πια γέρασα και άσπρισα, αφού οι γιοι μου είναι πια μεγάλοι όπως κι εσείς. 3 Εδώ είμαι· κατηγορήστε με ενώπιον του Κυρίου και μπροστά στον εκλεκτό του. Τίνος πήρα το βόδι ή τίνος πήρα το γαϊδούρι; Ποιον αδίκησα ή ποιον καταπίεσα και από ποιον δωροδοκήθηκα για να κάνω τα κλειστά μάτια; Θα σας δώσω πίσω ό,τι σας έχω πάρει».

4 Αυτοί απάντησαν: «Ούτε μας αδίκησες ούτε μας καταπίεσες, ούτε δέχτηκες να δωροδοκηθείς από κανέναν».

5 Ο Σαμουήλ τους είπε: «Σήμερα ας είναι μάρτυράς μου απέναντί σας ο Κύριος και ο εκλεκτός του, ότι δεν έχετε τίποτε να με κατηγορήσετε».

Και είπαν: «Ας είναι μάρτυρας».

6 Τους είπε ακόμη ο Σαμουήλ: «Ας είναι μάρτυράς μου ο Κύριος, που ανέδειξε το Μωυσή και τον Ααρών, και έβγαλε τους προγόνους σας από την Αίγυπτο. 7 Τώρα σταθείτε να λογαριαστώ μαζί σας ενώπιον του Κυρίου και να σας αναφέρω όλα τα θαυμαστά έργα του Κυρίου, που έκανε για σας και στους προγόνους σας. 8 Όταν ο Ιακώβ και οι γιοι του έφτασαν στην Αίγυπτο, οι Αιγύπτιοι τους υποδούλωσαν.*και οι γιοι του...οι Αιγύπτιοι τους υποδούλωσαν. Οι φρ. αυτές δεν υπάρχουν στο εβρ., προέρχονται από τους Ο΄. Κι όταν οι πρόγονοί σας φώναξαν στον Κύριο για βοήθεια, αυτός έστειλε το Μωυσή και τον Ααρών και τους έβγαλαν από την Αίγυπτο και τους έφεραν να κατοικήσουν σ’ αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο. 9 Μετά όμως οι πρόγονοί σας λησμόνησαν τον Κύριο το Θεό τους, κι αυτός τους παρέδωσε στον Σίσερα, αρχιστράτηγο της Ασώρ, στους Φιλισταίους και στο βασιλιά της Μωάβ, οι οποίοι πολέμησαν εναντίον τους. 10 Τότε επικαλέστηκαν πάλι τον Κύριο και είπαν: "Κύριε, αμαρτήσαμε, γιατί σε εγκαταλείψαμε και λατρέψαμε τα είδωλα του Βάαλ και τις Αστάρτες! Αλλά τώρα ελευθέρωσέ μας από τους εχθρούς μας, και θα λατρεύουμε εσένα". 11 Τότε ο Κύριος έστειλε τον Ιερουβάαλ, τον Βεδάν,*Βεδάν. Πρόσωπο άγνωστο. τον Ιεφθάε κι εμένα και σας ελευθέρωσε από τους γύρω εχθρούς σας και ζήσατε με ασφάλεια στη χώρα. 12 Αλλά όταν είδατε ότι ο Ναχάς, βασιλιάς των Αμμωνιτών, ήρθε να σας πολεμήσει, μου είπατε: "θέλουμε βασιλιά να μας κυβερνάει", και δε θελήσατε να είναι βασιλιάς σας ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας. 13 Νάτος, λοιπόν, ο βασιλιάς που διαλέξατε και που ζητήσατε. Ορίστε, ο Κύριος σας έδωσε βασιλιά. 14 Αν από ’δω κι εμπρός σέβεστε τον Κύριο το Θεό σας και τον λατρεύετε, αν τον υπακούτε και δεν επαναστατείτε στις διαταγές του, αν ακολουθείτε αυτόν, εσείς κι ο βασιλιάς σας, τότε ο Κύριος θα είναι μαζί σας. 15 Αν όμως δεν υπακούτε τον Κύριο και επαναστατείτε στις διαταγές του, τότε κι αυτός θα σας κάνει να νιώσετε βαριά τη δύναμή του πάνω σας και πάνω στο βασιλιά σας.*και πάνω στο βασιλιά σας, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «και πάνω στους προγόνους σας».16 Τώρα λοιπόν, περιμένετε και θα δείτε το μεγάλο θαύμα που θα κάνει ο Κύριος μπροστά σας: 17 Αυτή είναι η εποχή που θερίζουν τα στάρια. Θα παρακαλέσω τον Κύριο και θα στείλει βροντές και βροχή·*Ο θερισμός των σιτηρών τοποθετείται μεταξύ Μαΐου-Ιουνίου και τότε οι βροχές ήταν εξαιρετικά σπάνιες στην Παλαιστίνη. και τότε θα καταλάβετε πόσο μεγάλη αμαρτία κάνατε ενώπιόν του, που ζητήσατε βασιλιά».

18 Παρακάλεσε, λοιπόν, ο Σαμουήλ τον Κύριο κι έστειλε βροντές και βροχή εκείνη την ημέρα, κι όλος ο λαός φοβήθηκε πάρα πολύ τον Κύριο και το Σαμουήλ. 19 Και είπαν στο Σαμουήλ: «Προσευχήσου για τους δούλους σου στον Κύριο, το Θεό σου, και παρακάλεσε να μην πεθάνουμε, γιατί σ’ όλες τις αμαρτίες μας προσθέσαμε ακόμα μία: ζητήσαμε βασιλιά».

20 Τότε ο Σαμουήλ τους είπε: «Μη φοβάστε. Και βέβαια κάνατε μεγάλο κακό· μην απομακρυνθείτε όμως από τον Κύριο, αλλά να τον λατρέψετε μ’ όλη σας την καρδιά. 21 Μη λατρεύετε τα είδωλα, που δεν ωφελούν ούτε μπορούν να σώσουν κανέναν, αφού είναι ψεύτικα. 22 Ο Κύριος δεν θα εγκαταλείψει το λαό του, γιατί ο ίδιος θέλησε να σας κάνει λαό του· δε θ’ αφήσει να σπιλωθεί το όνομά του. 23 Όσο για μένα, μη γένοιτο να σταματήσω ποτέ να προσεύχομαι για σας, και να αμαρτήσω έτσι στον Κύριο! Αντίθετα, θα συνεχίσω να σας διδάσκω ποιος είναι ο ίσιος δρόμος κι ο σωστός. 24 Αλλά κι εσείς να σέβεστε τον Κύριο και να τον λατρεύετε ειλικρινά, μ’ όλη την καρδιά σας, γιατί βλέπετε τι θαυμαστά έργα έχει κάνει για σας. 25 Αν όμως κάνετε το κακό, τότε κι εσείς κι ο βασιλιάς σας θα καταστραφείτε».

1 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you. 2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day. 3 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.*12.3 bribe: Heb. ransom*12.3 to blind…: or, that I should hide mine eyes at him 4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand. 5 And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.*12.6 advanced: or, made 7 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.*12.7 righteous…: Heb. righteousnesses, or, benefits*12.7 to: Heb. with 8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place. 9 And when they forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. 10 And they cried unto the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee. 11 And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe. 12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king. 13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you. 14 If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:*12.14 commandment: Heb. mouth*12.14 continue…: Heb. be after 15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.

16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes. 17 Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king. 18 So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. 19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart; 21 And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain. 22 For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people. 23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:*12.23 in: Heb. from 24 Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.*12.24 how…: or, what a great thing 25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.
