1 Μία μικρή μύγα μέσα στο αρωματικό λάδι το αλλοιώνει και το κάνει να βρωμάει. Έτσι και μια μικρή ανοησία βαραίνει περισσότερο απ’ τη σοφία και τη δόξα.

2 Ένας σοφός ακολουθεί φυσιολογικά το σωστό· ο ανόητος όμως κάνει το αντίθετο. 3 Η ανοησία του φαίνεται ακόμα και στο δρόμο όταν περπατάει· όλοι καταλαβαίνουν ότι είναι ανόητος.

4 Αν ο άρχοντας θυμώσει μαζί σου, μην παραιτηθείς από τη θέση σου. Με την ψυχραιμία αποφεύγονται τα σοβαρότερα σφάλματα.

5 Υπάρχει ένα κακό που είδα να γίνεται εδώ στη γη, μια απροσεξία των αρχόντων: 6 Τοποθετούν σε υψηλές θέσεις τους ανόητους και σε χαμηλές τους επιφανείς. 7 Είδα δούλους να πηγαίνουν καβάλα πάνω στ’ άλογα και άρχοντες να πηγαίνουν πεζοί σαν δούλοι.

8 Όποιος σκάβει λάκκο, μέσα σ’ αυτόν θα πέσει· κι όποιος χαλάει φράχτη, θα δεχτεί δάγκωμα φιδιού. 9 Όποιος βγάζει απ’ το νταμάρι πέτρες, μπορεί απ’ αυτές να πληγωθεί, κι αυτός που σχίζει ξύλα κινδυνεύει.

10 Αν της αξίνας η κόψη στομώσει και δεν ακονιστεί, πρέπει πιότερη δύναμη να βάζει αυτός που τη δουλεύει. Πράγματι, προϋπόθεση κάθε επιτυχίας είναι η εκ των προτέρων σκέψη. 11 Τι ωφελεί το γητευτή κι αν ξέρει να γητεύει, όταν το φίδι ορμήσει πρώτο και τον δαγκώσει;

12 Στο στόμα του σοφού τα λόγια έχουνε χάρη· ενώ τα χείλη του ανόητου θα τον καταστρέψουν. 13 Αρχίζει λέγοντας ανοησίες και τελειώνει λέγοντας πράγματα τρελά. 14 Όταν αρχίσει δε λέει να σταματήσει.

Ο άνθρωπος δεν ξέρει τίποτα για το μέλλον· ποιος θα του πει τι θα συμβεί μετά απ’ αυτόν; 15 Όταν οι ανόητοι μιλούν πολύ, κουράζονται τόσο, που μετά δεν έχουν τη δύναμη ούτε το δρόμο για το σπίτι τους να βρουν!

16 Αλίμονο σ’ εσένα χώρα, που ο βασιλιάς σου είναι παιδάριο κι οι άρχοντές σου γλεντοκοπούν απ’ το πρωί ως το βράδυ! 17 Ευτυχισμένη είσ’ εσύ χώρα, που ο βασιλιάς σου είναι γιος ευγενών και οι άρχοντές σου τρώνε την κατάλληλη ώρα, για ν’ αποκτήσουν δύναμη κι όχι για να μεθύσουν.

18 Από αφροντισιά πέφτει της στέγης το δοκάρι, κι από του νοικοκύρη την αδράνεια στάζει το σπίτι.

19 Για να ευθυμήσουν οι άνθρωποι κάνουν συμπόσια· το κρασί χαροποιεί τη ζωή, και το χρήμα τα εξασφαλίζει όλα.

20 Μην κρίνεις το βασιλιά ούτε με τη σκέψη σου και μην πεις κακό για τον πλούσιο, ούτε όταν είσαι μόνος σου στο δωμάτιό σου, γιατί τα λόγια σου μπορεί να πάρουν φτερά και να διαδοθούν.
