1 Ρίξε το ψωμί σου πάνω στα νερά και μετά από πολλές μέρες μπορεί να το βρεις. 2 Τοποθέτησε τα πλούτη σου σε εφτά ή σε οκτώ μεριές, γιατί δεν ξέρεις τι κακό μπορεί να συμβεί πάνω στη γη.

3 Αν τα σύννεφα είναι γεμάτα βροχή, θα τη ρίξουν πάνω στη γη· κι αν ένα δέντρο πέσει προς το νότο ή προς το βορρά, στον τόπο που θα πέσει, εκεί θα μείνει. 4 Όποιος παρατηρεί συνέχεια τον άνεμο, δε θα σπείρει ποτέ· κι όποιος συνέχεια εξετάζει τα σύννεφα, ποτέ δε θα θερίσει.

5 Όπως δεν ξέρεις ποιος είναι ο δρόμος του ανέμου και πώς το έμβρυο σχηματίζεται μες στην κοιλιά της εγκύου, έτσι δεν ξέρεις και τα έργα του Θεού, ο οποίος δημιουργεί τα πάντα. 6 Σπείρε το σπόρο σου το πρωί, σπείρε τον και το βράδυ· γιατί πού ξέρεις; Μπορεί μια από τις δυο σπορές να ευδοκιμήσει ή μπορεί να ευδοκιμήσουν και οι δυο.

7 Γλυκό είναι το φως κι ευχάριστο στα μάτια να βλέπουν τον ήλιο. 8 Αλλά, όσο πολλά κι αν ζήσεις χρόνια, ν’ απολαμβάνεις την κάθε μέρα σου και να θυμάσαι πως οι σκοτεινές οι μέρες θα ’ναι περσότερες. Δεν υπάρχει τίποτε ν’ αποζητήσει κανείς τότε. 9 Απόλαυσε νέε μου, τα νιάτα σου! Η καρδιά σου ας χαίρεται όλες της νιότης σου τις μέρες. Μπορείς να αποκτήσεις ό,τι επιθυμεί η ψυχή σου και τα μάτια σου· αλλά να ξέρεις ότι για όλα αυτά ο Θεός θα σε κρίνει. 10 Διώξε τη λύπη απ’ την καρδιά σου, τον πόνο από το σώμα σου, γιατί τα νιάτα και τα μαύρα τα μαλλιά δεν διαρκούν πολύ.

9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.*11.10 sorrow: or, anger
