1 Λόγια του Εκκλησιαστή,*Εκκλησιαστής. Πρόκειται για πρόσωπο, που συγκεντρώνει και διδάσκει το λαό. γιου του Δαβίδ, και βασιλιά στην Ιερουσαλήμ.

2 Όλα είναι μάταια στο έπακρο, λέει ο Εκκλησιαστής, όλα είναι μάταια. Τα πάντα είναι μονάχα ματαιότητα. 3 Τι ωφελείται ο άνθρωπος απ’ όλο του το μόχθο και τη σκληρή του τη δουλειά πάνω στη γη; 4 Η μια γενιά περνάει και άλλη έρχεται, και μόνο η γη πάντοτε μένει η ίδια. 5 Ο ήλιος προβάλλει στην ανατολή και χάνεται στη δύση· τρέχει να βρεθεί στον τόπο του, για να ξαναφανεί. 6 Ο άνεμος φυσάει προς το νότο, προς το βορρά γυρίζει, πηγαίνει και ξαναγυρνάει κι αρχίζει πάλι απ’ την αρχή. 7 Οι ποταμοί όλοι χύνονται στη θάλασσα, μα η θάλασσα ποτέ της δε γεμίζει· ξαναγυρίζουν τα νερά προς τις πηγές των ποταμών, για να κυλήσουν πάλι. 8 Πόσο είν’ όλα αυτά ανιαρά! Αλλάζουν τόσο γρήγορα που κανένας δεν μπορεί να τα παρακολουθήσει και πολύ περισσότερο με λόγια να τα περιγράψει. Το μάτι δεν θα δει ποτέ αρκετά για να χορτάσει ούτε το αυτί ποτέ θ’ ακούσει αρκετά. 9 Αυτό που υπήρξε, αυτό και θα υπάρχει· κι αυτό που έγινε, το ίδιο θα επαναληφθεί. Τίποτα δεν είν’ καινούριο εδώ στη γη. 10 Αν πει κανείς για κάποιο πράγμα, «να και κάτι καινούριο», θα κάνει λάθος. Στην πραγματικότητα αυτό υπήρχε πολύ πριν από μας. 11 Αλλά κανένας δε θυμάται όσα έχουν γίνει από παλιά, κι αυτά που πρόκειται να γίνουν, κανένας δε θα τα θυμάται απ’ όσους μέλλουν να ζήσουν ύστερα απ’ αυτά.

12 Εγώ, ο Εκκλησιαστής, υπήρξα βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 13 Φρόντισα μ’ όλη μου τη δύναμη να ερευνήσω και με σοφία να διακρίνω όλα όσα γίνονται στον κόσμο αυτό· ασχολία δυσάρεστη, που ο Θεός την έδωσε στους ανθρώπους για να τους ταλαιπωρεί.

14 Είδα όλα τα έργα που γίνονται εδώ στη γη, και διαπίστωσα πως όλα είναι μάταια και σαν να κυνηγάει κανείς τον άνεμο. 15 Το στραβό δεν μπορεί να γίνει ίσιο κι ό,τι κανείς δεν έχει, να το μετρήσει δεν μπορεί.

16 Σκέφτηκα μέσα μου: «Τώρα εγώ έχω γίνει σπουδαίος και τόσο πολύ σοφός, ώστε ξεπέρασα όλους εκείνους που έζησαν πριν από μένα στην Ιερουσαλήμ· κι απόκτησα πολλή σοφία και γνώση. 17 Προσπάθησα να καταλάβω τι είναι σοφία και γνώση, και τι αφροσύνη κι ανοησία. Διαπίστωσα, όμως, ότι κι αυτό είναι σαν να κυνηγάει κανείς τον άνεμο· 18 γιατί στην πολλή σοφία, πολλή είναι και η λύπη· κι όσο κανείς γνωρίζει περισσότερα, τόσο και περισσότερο υποφέρει».

4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. 5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.*1.5 hasteth: Heb. panteth 6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. 7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.*1.7 return…: Heb. return to go 8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. 11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.*1.13 to be…: or, to afflict them 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. 15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.*1.15 that which is wanting: Heb. defect 16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.*1.16 had…: Heb. had seen much 17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. 18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
