1 Μη βιάζεσαι να μιλήσεις στο Θεό και να δώσεις αλόγιστες υποσχέσεις, γιατί ο Θεός είναι στον ουρανό κι εσύ στη γη· γι’ αυτό τα λόγια σου ας είναι λίγα. 2 Όπως οι πολλές έγνοιες φέρνουν άσχημα όνειρα, έτσι και τα λόγια τα πολλά, φέρνουν ανόητες κουβέντες.

3 Όταν τάξεις κάτι στο Θεό, μην αργήσεις να του το προσφέρεις, γιατί ο Θεός δεν αγαπάει τους επιπόλαιους· ό,τι έταξες, πρέπει να το εκπληρώσεις. 4 Καλύτερα να μην τάξεις, παρά να τάξεις κάτι και να μην το προσφέρεις.

5 Απόφυγε να πεις κάτι που θα σ’ ενοχοποιήσει. Κι αν το κάνεις, μην προσποιηθείς στον ιερέα ότι το ’κανες κατά λάθος. Αλλιώς θα προκαλέσεις με τα λόγια σου την οργή του Θεού και θα καταστρέψει τα έργα σου. 6 Τα πολλά όνειρα είναι ματαιότητα. Το ίδιο και τα πολλά λόγια. Γι’ αυτό να υπολογίζεις το Θεό.

7 Αν δεις να καταπιέζεται ο φτωχός και να παραβιάζεται η σωστή κρίση και η δικαιοσύνη σε κάποια επαρχία, μην εκφράσεις την έκπληξή σου γι’ αυτό· γιατί θα σου πουν ότι πάνω από κάθε αξιωματούχο υπάρχει κάποιος ανώτερος, 8 και πάνω απ’ αυτόν άλλος, και πως ό,τι γίνεται είναι για το καλό της χώρας, και ότι από κάθε χωράφι παίρνει ένα μέρος του καρπού κι ο βασιλιάς.*Ο στ. στο εβρ. είναι δυσνόητος.

9 Εκείνος που αγαπάει το χρήμα, δε θα το χορτάσει· κι εκείνος που αγαπάει την αφθονία, δε θα έχει ποτέ αρκετά εισοδήματα –κι αυτό είναι ματαιότητα. 10 Όσο πληθαίνουν τα αγαθά, τόσο πληθαίνουν κι αυτοί που τα τρώνε· και ποια η ωφέλεια γι’ αυτούς που τα έχουν, παρά μόνο να τα βλέπουν με τα μάτια τους; 11 Ο ύπνος του εργάτη είναι γλυκός, είτε λίγο φάει είτε πολύ· ο χορτασμός, όμως, τον πλούσιο δεν τον αφήνει να κοιμηθεί.

12 Υπάρχει ένα μεγάλο κακό που πρόσεξα πάνω στη γη: Είναι ο πλούτος που φυλάσσεται από τον κάτοχό του, για να του φέρει δυστυχία. 13 Ο πλούτος εκείνος χάνεται από κακή διαχείριση του κατόχου του· κι όταν αυτός αποκτάει γιο, δεν του έχει μείνει τίποτε στα χέρια του. 14 Θ’ αφήσει αυτόν τον κόσμο γυμνός, όπως ήρθε βγαίνοντας απ’ την κοιλιά της μάνας του. Κι ο κόπος του τίποτα δε θα του έχει αποφέρει, που να μπορεί να το πάρει μαζί του. 15 Κι αυτό είναι το μεγάλο κακό γι’ αυτόν· να φεύγει απ’ τον κόσμο όπως ακριβώς ήρθε. Και ποια είναι η ωφέλειά του; Μόχθησε κυνηγώντας τον άνεμο. 16 Επιπλέον, όλη του τη ζωή την περνάει μέσα στο σκοτάδι και στη στενοχώρια,*μέσα... στενοχώρια, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «τρώγοντας στο σκοτάδι». άρρωστος και οργισμένος.

17 Εκείνο, λοιπόν, που εγώ αναγνωρίζω ως αγαθό είναι το εξής: Είναι ωραίο πράγμα ο άνθρωπος να τρώει, να πίνει και να απολαμβάνει τα αγαθά του κόπου του εδώ στη γη, σ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ζωής που του δίνει ο Θεός, γιατί αυτό είναι το μερίδιό του. 18 Και σ’ όποιον ο Θεός έδωσε πλούτο και αγαθά, καθώς και τη δυνατότητα να τα απολαμβάνει παίρνοντας έτσι το μερίδιό του, αυτός μπορεί να χαίρεται τους καρπούς των κόπων του. Αυτό είναι δώρο Θεού. 19 Έτσι δεν θ’ ανησυχεί όταν θα σκέφτεται πως οι μέρες της ζωής του είναι λιγοστές, όταν ο Θεός τού δίνει όλες αυτές τις χαρές στη ζωή του.

9 Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field. 10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. 11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? 12 The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. 13 There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt. 14 But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand. 15 As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand. 16 And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind? 17 All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.
