1 Ο Κύριος έδωσε εντολή στο Μωυσή να πει στους ιερείς, τους γιους του Ααρών:

«Κανείς ιερέας δεν πρέπει να καθίσταται ακάθαρτος ανάμεσα στον λαό του, αγγίζοντας νεκρό, 2 παρά μόνο αν πρόκειται για τους πλησιέστερους συγγενείς του, δηλαδή τη μητέρα του, τον πατέρα του, το γιο του, την κόρη του και τον αδερφό του. 3 Τα ίδια ισχύουν και για την άγαμη αδερφή του· παραμένει στενή συγγενής του, εφόσον δεν παντρεύτηκε· αυτήν μπορεί να την αγγίζει χωρίς να καθίσταται ακάθαρτος. 4 Δεν θα πρέπει όμως να καθίσταται ακάθαρτος ανάμεσα στον λαό του με το θάνατο των εξ αγχιστείας συγγενών του. 5 Οι ιερείς δεν πρέπει να κουρεύονται έτσι ώστε να φαίνεται το δέρμα του κεφαλιού τους, ούτε να κόβουν τις άκρες της γενειάδας τους, ούτε να κάνουν χαρακιές στο σώμα τους.

6 »Οι ιερείς πρέπει να είναι αφιερωμένοι στο Θεό τους, άγιοι, και να μη βεβηλώνουν το όνομά του, γιατί αυτοί προσφέρουν στον Κύριο τις θυσίες που γίνονται με φωτιά, και είναι τροφή του Θεού τους. 7 Ο ιερέας δεν πρέπει να παντρεύεται γυναίκα πόρνη ή ατιμασμένη, ούτε γυναίκα χωρισμένη από τον άντρα της· είναι αφιερωμένος στο Θεό του. 8 Ο λαός πρέπει να τον θεωρεί άγιο, γιατί προσφέρει την τροφή του Θεού σου, και γιατί άγιος είμαι εγώ, ο Κύριος, ο οποίος κάνω άγιο το λαό μου. 9 Αν η κόρη ενός ιερέα ατιμαστεί με πορνεία, πρέπει να καεί στη φωτιά, γιατί ντροπιάζει τον πατέρα της.

10 »Ο αρχιερέας είναι ανώτερος από τους αδερφούς του· πάνω στο κεφάλι του χύθηκε το λάδι του χρίσματος και έτσι καθιερώθηκε στο αξίωμα αυτό ώστε να μπορεί να φορέσει την αρχιερατική στολή· δεν πρέπει λοιπόν ν’ αφήνει τα μαλλιά του να κρέμονται, ούτε να εκδηλώνει το πένθος του σκίζοντας τα ρούχα του.*σκίζοντας τα ρούχα του. Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29.11 Δεν πρέπει να μπει σε κανένα σπίτι όπου υπάρχει νεκρός και να καταστεί ακάθαρτος, ούτε για τον πατέρα του ούτε για τη μητέρα του. 12 Δεν επιτρέπεται να βγει έξω από το αγιαστήριο του Θεού του, για να μην το βεβηλώσει. Φέρνει πάνω του το σημάδι από το άγιο λάδι του χρίσματος του Θεού του. Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος. 13,14 Δεν πρέπει να πάρει για γυναίκα του χήρα ή χωρισμένη ή ατιμασμένη ή πόρνη, αλλά μια παρθένα από το λαό του, 15 για να μη γίνουν ακάθαρτοι οι απόγονοί τους ανάμεσα στο λαό του. Επειδή εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι που τον κάνω άγιο».

16 Ο Κύριος έδωσε εντολή στο Μωυσή: 17 να πει στον Ααρών: «Κανένας από τους απογόνους σου, στις επερχόμενες γενιές δεν πρέπει να πλησιάσει για να προσφέρει την τροφή του Θεού του, αν έχει κάποιο σωματικό ελάττωμα. 18 Κανένας με σωματικό ελάττωμα δεν μπορεί να πλησιάζει το θυσιαστήριο: Κανείς τυφλός, χωλός ή με κομμένη μύτη ή παραμορφωμένος· 19 κανείς με σπασμένο πόδι ή χέρι· 20 κανείς καμπούρης ή πολύ αδύνατος, κανείς με ελάττωμα στο μάτι ή με ψώρα ή με λειχήνες ή με σπασμένους όρχεις. 21 Όποιος από τους απογόνους του Ααρών του ιερέα έχει κάποιο σωματικό ελάττωμα, αυτός δεν μπορεί να πλησιάσει για να προσφέρει στον Κύριο τις θυσίες που γίνονται με φωτιά, την τροφή του Θεού του. 22 Μπορεί να τρώει από την τροφή του Θεού του, από τα αγιότατα και από τα άγια. 23 Αλλά δεν επιτρέπεται να περάσει πίσω από το καταπέτασμα, ούτε να πλησιάσει το θυσιαστήριο με σωματικό ελάττωμα, για να μη βεβηλώσει το αγιαστήριό μου· γιατί εγώ, ο Κύριος, είμαι που κάνω άγιους τους ιερείς».

24 Αυτά είπε ο Μωυσής στον Ααρών, στους γιους του και σ’ όλους τους Ισραηλίτες.

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people: 2 But for his kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother, 3 And for his sister a virgin, that is nigh unto him, which hath had no husband; for her may he be defiled. 4 But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.*21.4 he…: or, being an husband among his people, he shall not defile himself for his wife, etc 5 They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh. 6 They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy. 7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God. 8 Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he shall be holy unto thee: for I the LORD, which sanctify you, am holy.

9 And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.

10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes; 11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother; 12 Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD. 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginity. 14 A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife. 15 Neither shall he profane his seed among his people: for I the LORD do sanctify him.

16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 17 Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.*21.17 bread: or, food 18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous, 19 Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded, 20 Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken;*21.20 a dwarf: or, too slender 21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God. 22 He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy. 23 Only he shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries: for I the LORD do sanctify them. 24 And Moses told it unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel.
