1,2 Μετά το θάνατο των δύο γιων του Ααρών, όταν πρόσφεραν αντικανονική θυσία ενώπιον του Κυρίου, ο Κύριος μίλησε στο Μωυσή και του είπε:

«Πες στον αδερφό σου τον Ααρών, ότι δεν επιτρέπεται να μπαίνει οποιαδήποτε στιγμή στο αγιαστήριο, πίσω από το καταπέτασμα, μπροστά στο ιλαστήριο, που σκεπάζει την κιβωτό, γιατί πάνω στο ιλαστήριο εμφανίζομαι εγώ μέσα σε σύννεφο. Αν παρακούσει θα πεθάνει. 3 Μέσα στο αγιαστήριο θα μπαίνει με ένα μοσχάρι, για τη θυσία εξιλέωσης και με ένα κριάρι για τη θυσία του ολοκαυτώματος. 4 Θα φοράει τον ιερό λινό χιτώνα, τις λινές περισκελίδες και τη λινή ζώνη, και στο κεφάλι του θα φοράει τη λινή μίτρα· αυτά είναι τα ιερά ενδύματα. Θα τα φορέσει αφού λούσει το σώμα του με νερό. 5 Η ισραηλιτική κοινότητα θα του δώσει δύο τράγους που θα θυσιαστούν για την εξιλέωση της αμαρτίας και ένα κριάρι για τη θυσία του ολοκαυτώματος. 6 Ο Ααρών θα προσφέρει το μοσχάρι θυσία εξιλέωσης και θα κάνει την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού για τον εαυτό του και για το σπίτι του. 7 Έπειτα θα πάρει τους δύο τράγους και θα τους στήσει ενώπιον του Κυρίου στην είσοδο της σκηνής του Μαρτυρίου. 8 Εκεί θα τραβήξει κλήρους για τους δύο τράγους: έναν κλήρο για να οριστεί ο τράγος για τον Κύριο και έναν κλήρο για τον Αζαζήλ. 9 Θα φέρει τον τράγο, στον οποίο έπεσε ο κλήρος "του Κυρίου", και θα τον προσφέρει θυσία εξιλέωσης. 10 Τον τράγο στον οποίο έπεσε ο κλήρος "του Αζαζήλ", θα τον στήσει ζωντανό ενώπιον του Κυρίου, για να κάνουν πάνω σ’ αυτόν την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού· έπειτα θα τον διώξουν στον Αζαζήλ, στην έρημο.

11 »Ο Ααρών θα προσκομίσει το δικό του μοσχάρι της θυσίας εξιλέωσης για να κάνει την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού για τον εαυτό του και για την οικογένειά του, και θα το σφάξει. 12 Έπειτα θα πάρει ένα θυμιατήρι γεμάτο αναμμένα κάρβουνα από το θυσιαστήριο που είναι ενώπιον του Κυρίου, θα γεμίσει τα δυο του χέρια με ψιλοκομμένο αρωματικό θυμίαμα και θα το φέρει πίσω από το καταπέτασμα. 13 Θα ρίξει το θυμίαμα στη φωτιά ενώπιον του Κυρίου, ώστε ο καπνός του θυμιάματος να σκεπάσει το ιλαστήριο που βρίσκεται πάνω από το νόμο, για να μην πεθάνει ο Ααρών. 14 Ύστερα θα πάρει από το αίμα του μοσχαριού και θα ραντίσει με το δάχτυλό του την ανατολική πλευρά του ιλαστηρίου. Επίσης μπροστά στο ιλαστήριο θα ραντίσει με το δάχτυλό του εφτά φορές από το αίμα αυτό. 15 Μετά θα σφάξει τον τράγο της θυσίας για την εξιλέωση του λαού, και θα φέρει το αίμα του μέσα από το καταπέτασμα. Μ’ αυτό το αίμα θα κάνει ό,τι έκανε και με το αίμα του μοσχαριού, δηλαδή θα το ραντίσει πάνω στο ιλαστήριο και μπροστά απ’ αυτό. 16 Μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο θα κάνει για τα άγια των αγίων την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού για τις ανομίες των Ισραηλιτών που τις προξένησαν οι παραβάσεις τους και οι αμαρτίες τους. Το ίδιο θα κάνει και για ολόκληρη τη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου, που βρίσκεται ανάμεσά τους, στο ακάθαρτο στρατόπεδό τους.

17 »Κανένας άνθρωπος δεν πρέπει να βρίσκεται στη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου, από τη στιγμή που ο Ααρών μπαίνει στο αγιαστήριο για να κάνει την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού. Αφού θα έχει κάνει την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού γι’ αυτόν τον ίδιο, για την οικογένειά του και για την ισραηλιτική κοινότητα, 18 τότε θα βγει και θα πάει στο θυσιαστήριο που βρίσκεται ενώπιον του Κυρίου και θα κάνει την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού για το θυσιαστήριο. Θα πάρει από το αίμα του μοσχαριού και από το αίμα του τράγου και θ’ αλείψει τα κέρατα του θυσιαστηρίου ολόγυρα. 19 Θα ραντίσει πάνω στο θυσιαστήριο από το αίμα με το δάχτυλό του εφτά φορές· έτσι θα το καθαρίσει από τις ανομίες των Ισραηλιτών και θα το αγιάσει».

20 «Αφού τελειώσει ο Ααρών την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού για τα άγια των αγίων, για την υπόλοιπη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου και για το θυσιαστήριο, τότε θα φέρει κοντά του το ζωντανό τράγο. 21 Θα βάλει τα δυο του χέρια πάνω στο κεφάλι του ζώου και θα εξομολογηθεί πάνω του όλες τις ανομίες τις παραβάσεις και τις αμαρτίες των Ισραηλιτών και έτσι θα τις αποθέσει στο κεφάλι του τράγου. Μετά θα τον διώξει στην έρημο, με ειδικό άνθρωπο που έχει οριστεί γι’ αυτό. 22 Ο τράγος θα σηκώσει πάνω του όλες τις ανομίες και θα τις φέρει σε άγονη χώρα· ο άνθρωπος θ’ αφήσει ελεύθερο τον τράγο στην έρημο.

23 »Μετά ο Ααρών θα μπει στη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου, θα βγάλει τα λινά ενδύματα, που φόρεσε για να μπει στα άγια των αγίων και θα τα αφήσει εκεί. 24 Θα λούσει το σώμα του με νερό σε τόπο ιερό και θα φορέσει τα ρούχα του. Στη συνέχεια, θα βγει και θα προσφέρει τη θυσία του ολοκαυτώματος για τον εαυτό του και για το λαό· και θα κάνει την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού για τον εαυτό του και για το λαό. 25 Το λίπος της θυσίας εξιλέωσης θα το κάψει στο θυσιαστήριο.

26 »Ο άνθρωπος που θα οδηγήσει τον τράγο στον Αζαζήλ θα πρέπει να πλύνει τα ρούχα του και να λούσει το σώμα του με νερό· έπειτα θα μπορεί να μπει στο στρατόπεδο. 27 Το μοσχάρι και τον τράγο που θα έχουν προσφερθεί θυσία εξιλέωσης και που το αίμα τους θα έχει μεταφερθεί στο αγιαστήριο για την τελετουργία του εξιλασμού, θα τα βγάλουν έξω από το στρατόπεδο, και θα κάψουν το δέρμα τους, το κρέας τους και την κοπριά τους. 28 Ο άνθρωπος που θα τα κάψει, θα πρέπει να πλύνει τα ρούχα του και να λούσει το σώμα του με νερό· κατόπιν θα μπορεί να μπει στο στρατόπεδο».

29 «Αυτά θα είναι για σας νόμος παντοτινός· τη δέκατη μέρα του έβδομου μήνα θα ταπεινώνεστε. Δεν θα κάνετε καμιά εργασία, ούτε οι Ισραηλίτες ούτε οι ξένοι που ζουν ανάμεσά σας. 30 Αυτή την ημέρα θα γίνεται για σας η τελετουργία του εξιλασμού, για να καθαρίζεστε απ’ όλες τις αμαρτίες σας, ώστε να είστε καθαροί ενώπιον του Κυρίου. 31 Η ημέρα του Εξιλασμού θα είναι για σας αγιότατη, μέρα απόλυτης ανάπαυσης και ταπείνωσης· αυτός είναι νόμος παντοτινός. 32 Τον εξιλασμό θα τον τελεί ο ιερέας που θα έχει χριστεί και καθιερωθεί για να διαδεχθεί τον πατέρα του στην ιεροσύνη. Αυτός θα φοράει τα άγια λινά ενδύματα, 33 και θα τελεί τον εξιλασμό για τα άγια των αγίων, την υπόλοιπη σκηνή του Μαρτυρίου και το θυσιαστήριο. Επίσης θα τελεί τον εξιλασμό για τους ιερείς και για όλο το λαό της κοινότητας. 34 Αυτό θα είναι για σας νόμος παντοτινός. Μία φορά το χρόνο θα τελείτε για τους Ισραηλίτες τον εξιλασμό για όλες τις αμαρτίες τους».

Ο Ααρών έκανε όλα όσα ο Κύριος διέταξε το Μωυσή.

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the LORD, and died; 2 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. 3 Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.

5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. 6 And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house. 7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.*16.8 scapegoat: Heb. Azazel 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD’s lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.*16.9 fell: Heb. went up 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness. 11 And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself: 12 And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail: 13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not: 14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: 16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.*16.16 remaineth: Heb. dwelleth 17 And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel. 18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. 19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

20 And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat: 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:*16.21 a fit…: Heb. a man of opportunity 22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.*16.22 not…: Heb. of separation 23 And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there: 24 And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people. 25 And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar. 26 And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp. 27 And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung. 28 And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.

29 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: 30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. 31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever. 32 And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest’s office in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:*16.32 consecrate: Heb. fill his hand 33 And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation. 34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
